The Fayette County Education Foundation has awarded over $9,000 this year in grants and scholarships to educators in the Fayette County Public School System.
More than $7,800 was given to 17 teachers at all school levels throughout the county to implement innovative learning programs in their classrooms, grade levels, and in some cases, the entire school. Awards are given to unique programs that are in addition to what is already being funded by the school system. Because these are supplemental programs, many would never come to fruition without monetary assistance from the Fayette County Education Foundation.
Three employees studying to become teachers received $500 scholarships to help offset their college expenses. The scholarships were awarded to the following paraprofessionals: Laurie Cannata, Braelinn Elementary; Autria Hairston, Fayetteville Intermediate; and Patricia Sanders, Oak Grove Elementary. Scholarship recipients must be employed as paraprofessionals in the school system and enrolled in an accredited teaching program through a college or university.
Counting this year’s grants and scholarships, the Fayette County Education Foundation has given nearly $190,000 to educators since its first awards in 2002. Funding would not be possible without the generous support of the business community, Fayette County Public School System employees and local individuals.
The foundation is a cooperative effort between the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce and the Fayette County Public School System. Anyone interested in becoming a supporter of the Fayette County Education Foundation can contact Melinda Berry-Dreisbach at the Fayette County Board of Education, 770-460-3535.

School System Embraces Changes for Education Community Conversations in the Works
“Where Excellence Counts” is the motto of the Fayette County Public School System. Increasing “excellence” in education for all students is exactly why the Fayette County Board of Education has unanimously adopted a resolution supporting a statewide vision to transform public education in Georgia.
Starting this fall, the school system will host a series of community conversations about the vision and what impact it could have on the future of education in Fayette County.
The vision is part of a two-year project of the Georgia School Boards Association and the Georgia School Superintendents Association aimed at changing how Georgia plans for, delivers, sustains, and provides public education for children from birth through completion of high school. The two organizations held meetings throughout the state soliciting the views of all stakeholders, including citizens and students, about the current state of public education and their hopes for the future.
The full report of the findings is Phase 1 of the project, titled “A Vision for Public Education: Equity and Excellence,” and is available on the project website: www.visionforpubliced.org. Phase 2 involves study of the recommendations at the local level, and finally implementation.
The school system plans to organize several community conversations next school year to include local businesses and organizations, students, parents, educators, residents (both with and without students in the system), and all persons interested in helping to improve the county’s educational program.
It is important for the county to continue to more forward, seeking out innovation and offering quality, well-rounded educational experiences in classrooms in every school, every day. Not just parents and students, but every resident in the county directly benefits from an effective school system. A solid educational system keeps home values high and brings businesses to the county, as well as prepares children to become responsible citizens and contributors to the community and society.
Specific dates for the community conversations will be announced at the beginning of the 2011-2012 school year. In the meantime, the community is encouraged to learn more by watching a video and reading complete information on the transformation project on the Vision for Public Education website, www.visionforpubliced.org. A link to the vision website is available on the FCBOE webpage, www.fcboe.org.

All of Fayette’s High Schools Make State’s AP Honor List
All five of Fayette’s public high schools made Georgia’s 2011 list of AP (Advanced Placement) Honor Schools, with the majority earning recognition in multiple categories based on the results of AP exams.
AP classes offer rigorous college-level learning options to students in high school. Students who receive a 3, 4 or 5 on AP exams may receive college credit. AP classes and exams are administered by the College Board, which also administers the SAT.
Both Fayette County and Sandy Creek High schools placed in the AP Access and Support Schools category: schools with 30 percent of AP test takers that are African-American or Hispanic, and at least 30 percent of all AP exams scoring 3 or higher.
Starr’s Mill High is listed as an AP Merit School: schools with at least 20 percent of students taking AP exams, and at least half of the AP exams scoring a 3 or higher.
McIntosh High, Sandy Creek High, Starr’s Mill High and Whitewater High schools made the list for AP STEM Schools: schools with students testing in at least two AP math courses and two AP science courses (AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, AP Statistics, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Environmental Science, AP Physics B, AP Physics C, AP Computer Science).
McIntosh High, Sandy Creek High, Starr’s Mill High and Whitewater High schools also are listed in the AP STEM Achievement Schools category: schools with students testing in at least two AP math courses and two AP science courses, and at least 40 percent of the exam scores on AP math and AP science exams scoring a 3 or higher.
More than 350 high schools throughout the state were named AP Honor Schools.

Fayette Excels For Exceptional Children
The Fayette County School System strives to ensure that all students receive the best education possible while arming them with the skills they will need to succeed in today’s competitive environment.
For the eighth year in a row since the award’s inception, the school system’s Exceptional Children’s Program has been recognized for excellence in the education of students with disabilities by the Georgia Department of Education.
The Pacesetter Award, which was presented at the Georgia Council for Administrators of Special Education (GCASE), marks the school system as a leader in the state for outstanding efforts to improve the performance of students with disabilities. Fayette is the only school system in Georgia to have received the award eight consecutive years.
The award distinguishes excellence in six areas of achievement: decreasing the number of students who drop out, achieving a higher percentage of graduates with regular education diplomas, educating students in the least restrictive environment, transitioning students to their desired postsecondary outcomes, increasing the percentage of students who meet or exceed state achievement standards and reducing the gap in achievement between students with disabilities and their general education peers.
Director Chris Horton oversees Fayette’s Exceptional Children’s Program.

State Names Distinguished Schools
A total of eight of Fayette’s elementary and middle schools have been named Title 1 Distinguished Schools by the Georgia Department of Education.
The county’s schools are among 868 public schools statewide to receive the designation. Schools are given “distinguished” status based on having made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) three or more years consecutively. Since all of Fayette’s schools receiving the honor have met AYP six or more years in a row, they will each receive a monetary award, paid out of federal funds, as well as a certificate recognizing their achievement.
Both North Fayette Elementary and Robert J. Burch Elementary have met AYP for 12 consecutive years and will each receive a $1,484 award. Both schools have been recognized as distinguished for 10 years.
Fayette Middle, Fayetteville Intermediate, Hood Avenue Primary, Inman Elementary and Oak Grove Elementary have made AYP for eight consecutive years and will each receive a $742 award. These schools have been recognized as distinguished for six years.
Flat Rock Middle has made AYP for seven consecutive years and will receive a $742 award. The school has been recognized as distinguished for five years.

Fayette County Moves Up in Ranking of Tech-Savvy School Boards
The Fayette County Public School System moved up a place nationally in the seventh annual Digital School Districts Survey by e.Republic’s Center for Digital Education and the National School Boards Association.
The school system placed seventh in the large student population category with more than 15,000 students. The purpose of the survey is to showcase exemplary school boards and districts’ use of technology to govern the district, communicate with students, parents and the community, and to improve district operations.
"We are honored to receive this award. It is a team effort on the part of our technology department, the staff at the schools, county level and our students and parents," says Acting Superintendent Fred Oliver.
All U.S. public school boards/districts were invited to participate in the survey. Schools were placed in three categories based on size of enrollment. The top 10 districts from each category received awards. Winners reflected those school districts with the fullest implementation of technology standards in the evolution of digital education.
The study examined and documented school boards and districts’ 1) online presence; 2) technology applications that allow the public to interact with school board members, administrators and teachers; 3) the public’s access to information such as school board calendars and district policies; and 4) technology use in the district and classrooms.

Whitewater High’s marketing teacher, Krystin Glover, has been selected to serve at the state and national level to help with the advancement of career and technical education.
The membership of the Georgia Association for Career and Technical Education elected her to serve on the board of directors as vice-president of the Marketing Education division. Her term will be for two years.
In addition to serving on the board of directors, Glover will co-chair the Public Relations Special Committee.
Glover was also elected to serve on the Young Professionals Task Force of the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE), a national organization.

Enjoy a Free Sub and Help a Teacher
What if every time you ate a sandwich you were helping a teacher bring innovative learning programs to his or her students?
You can by purchasing a $10 Sub Saver card good at local Subway restaurants throughout Georgia. You get 32 coupons for a free six-inch sub with the purchase of a six-inch sub and a medium drink. That’s like getting a foot-long for half the price, and a savings of over $100. With every card purchased, the Fayette County Education Foundation will receive $5 to apply toward funding classroom projects and programs.
Students across the county have benefitted from programs that their teachers have envisioned and were able to implement with the help of the Fayette County Education Foundation. Math has made more sense, chemistry has become more interesting, and history has been brought to life thanks to the imaginations of teachers and financial help from the foundation.
Every year Fayette’s public school teachers apply to receive money from the Fayette County Education Foundation for educational programs that otherwise would go unfunded. The foundation depends on community donations and other fundraising activities to collect the monies needed to fund teacher-driven programs. The foundation has given nearly $180,000 to Fayette’s public classroom teachers during its eight-year history.
Teachers will begin making their funding requests next month, and the foundation needs donor support to make their ideas a reality. Cards can be purchased at the Fayette County Board of Education located at 210 Stonewall Avenue in Fayetteville during regular business hours, Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
The Fayette County Education Foundation is a nonprofit organization and is a cooperative effort between the school system and the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce. For more information about the foundation or the Sub Saver cards, contact Melinda Berry-Dreisbach, public information specialist for Fayette County Schools, 770-460-3535.

Free Love and Logic Seminar Starts September 14
Both parents and educators often view the disciplining of children to be one of the most challenging issues they face.
This fall, parents and teachers of the Fayette County Public School System are invited to attend a free seven-week Love and Logic® workshop on Tuesdays September 14, 21, 28, and October 5, 12, 19 and 26 from 6:30-8 p.m. at Robert J. Burch Elementary. While the workshop is free, there is a $10 book fee. CARE, Children at Risk in Education, is sponsoring the workshop.
Parents can download a registration form from the FCBOE website, www.fcboe.org. Click on “Instructional and Education Programs” and then the “Student Assistance Services (CARE)” link. The completed form should be returned to the child’s school counselor.
Participants will learn practical solutions to some of the most common challenges facing parents, teachers, and anybody who cares for kids. Easy-to-learn strategies will be presented, for children of any age, that:
• Help them feel great about themselves
• Up the odds of them making wise decisions and resisting peer pressure
• Put an end to arguing, back talk, and power struggles
• Gain cooperation through the use of choices within limits
• Guide children to own and solve their own problems
Love and Logic techniques are based on five principals that include preserving children’s self concept, teaching children to solve problems that they have created, sharing decision-making along with control, providing empathy and warmth along with consequences, and building adult-child relationships.
For parents and educators who cannot make the fall session, another workshop is being planned for the spring.

Fayette is a Top Performer on ACT
Just released 2010 ACT test scores show that Fayette County’s high school seniors are among the most prepared for college-level coursework in the state and nation.
Among the school systems whose scores have been published (Gwinnett, Cobb, DeKalb, Fulton, and Marietta City), Fayette posted the highest composite score of 22.6, up from 22.5 last year. In comparison to state and national composite scores, state schools scored 20.7 and schools nationwide scored 21.0. That puts Fayette 1.9 points ahead of the state composite and 1.6 points ahead of the nation.
The ACT consists of curriculum-based tests of educational development in English, mathematics, reading and science designed to measure the skills needed for success in the first year of college coursework.
Most students in Fayette take the SAT, the other college entrance exam. The ACT is the primary college admissions test for schools in some other parts of the country.

Staples Makes Donation to CARE
Andrew Meaney, sales associate, and Sharon Francisco, assistant manager, at the Fayetteville Staples delivered donated items to CARE for distribution to the school system’s teachers and students.
This school year is over, but the staff at the Staples in Fayetteville is already looking ahead to the next one.
During the last week of school, the store donated a number of supplies to the school system’s CARE (Children at Risk in Education) program. Among them were calculators, dry erase boards, bike locks, and magnetic bulletin boards. CARE will distribute the supplies next year to schools and students that have been identified as being able to benefit from them.
“We are very appreciative of the numerous items Staples so generously donated. Our schools and students will put them to good use,” says CARE Coordinator Karen Spangler.

South African Educators Visit Classrooms
Economic education in Fayette County is highly revered throughout the state. The county’s students are among the highest scorers in the subject on state mandated exams and regularly win competitions that test their content knowledge. Their teachers are often recognized for their work, too, through awards, invitations to speak at conferences and participation in travel study groups.
Fayette County’s economic program is receiving yet another accolade. Four educators from South Africa visited the school system the week of April 20 as part of a five-day study tour on economic education in Georgia; two of their days were spent visiting schools in Fayette.
Teachers Shelby Garner at Spring Hill Elementary, Mark DeCourcy and Michael Melvin, both at Starr’s Mill High, and Chris Cannon at Sandy Creek High hosted the visiting in educators in their classrooms. The visitors observed as the teachers taught lessons on economics.
The South African educators, two from the Western Cape Education Department and two from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, are participants in the Georgia Council on Economic Education’s “Training of Trainers” program. They are visiting the United States to learn more about the delivery of economic education programs in different parts of the country so they can go back to South Africa and share successful ideas with fellow educators. Following their Georgia visit, the educators traveled to Arkansas.

Fayette School System Seeks Stakeholder Input
Stakeholders can help the Fayette County Public School System improve its educational program by providing input through an online survey. School system employees, parents and community members are invited to participate.
The online survey will be available April 22-May 14 on the school system’s website, www.fcboe.org.
Input from stakeholders is extremely valuable as the school system continues to strive for excellence. Survey results will help the school system determine where improvements need to be made.
