Blaze Masquerade Pageant Winners

Sara Harp Minter held their 4th Annual Blaze's Masquerade Pageant on Saturday, March 19. The pageant had 41 contestants who competed in beauty, poise and personality as well as overall appearance. The high school division contestants were also judged on an interview question. Queens received a beautiful rhinestone crown, trophy, and an embroidered sash. The Overall Grand Supreme for the high school division received a $200.00 scholarship which she will use to go towards her college tuition. The pageant raised over $1200.00 which goes back to the school's general fund.

Students Flush with Success at Future Fayette 2030 Contest

Starr’s Mill High’s “Dr. John” is giving Japan’s fancy medical toilet a run for its money.

In an adapted version of what the Japanese have created, three futuristic thinking students have envisioned a toilet that will not only analyze a person’s urine, blood pressure, temperature, and weight, but also send the data directly to a physician who can authorize immediate in-home treatment to cure illness, all while the patient sits on the toilet.

Starr’s Mill students Kevin Thomas, Carol Thomas and Casey Slaggert are the three inventors of “Dr. John,” and the winners of the Future Fayette 2030 Contest sponsored by the Rotary Club of Peachtree City in conjunction with the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce Community Expo. The winning team was announced at the expo held at New Hope Baptist Church September 14. Team members received a net book and $500 was given to their school.

The goal of the competition was to get high school students thinking about products and services that would be included in “smart communities.” These students believe that in-home health monitoring systems are the wave of the future, and will be the key to living longer by detecting and curing diseases and illnesses before they become life threatening.

The mockup of the toilet the students created for the competition features a hypothetical patient, Jack, whose medical toilet detected the on start of lung cancer. With a simple injection of nano-bots, the cancerous cells are destroyed and he is cured.

In case you are interested, the students predict that life expectancy could go upwards to 150 years old for most people, thanks to forward thinkers like them who are working on technology that will keep the community healthier, safer and happier.

Sandy Creek Students Nearly Sweep Writing Competition

Three rising seniors at Sandy Creek High took the top three placements in the 14th Georgia History Day Essay Contest, nearly sweeping the entire competition sponsored by “Georgia Voyager” magazine and the Brunswick-Golden Isles Visitors Bureau.

The winners are (first place) Linda Wilkins; (second place) Nia Decaille and (third place) Camara Carter. Their winning essays will be published in the “Georgia Voyager” magazine. Over 2,000 Georgia students wrote essays on this year’s theme, “Georgia Authors.”

The winners were recognized at a special Georgia History Day ceremony held at the Georgia Department of Education in May. Awards are given to first, second, third and fourth place winners at the middle and high school levels. The competition is open to all Georgia students in grades 6-12.

Young Fayette County Scientists Showcase Experiments

Have you ever wondered about the recovery time of pH in the human mouth, effect of a lacrosse stick’s length on velocity or the role of PGC-1 alpha in the pathogenesis of Parkinson’s disease? These are just a sampling of questions on the minds of Fayette’s budding scientists that were explored at the 2010 Fayette County Science and Engineering Fair.

Students from middle and high schools across the county submitted projects for the fair. A total of 25 projects were awarded first place and will now advance to the Griffin Regional Science and Engineering Fair scheduled for February 26 at Griffin RESA.

Students entered projects individually or as teams. Middle school winners advancing to the regional fair are (Bennett’s Mill) Matthew Harmon, Monica Schwingshaki, Mamie Smith, Alisa Chapman and Tori Toth, Jamie DeCicco, Jordan Watson and Katy Lewis, Michael Koenig and Matthew Melatti; (J.C. Starr’s Mill High School Wins 2009 CEE/Goldman Sachs Foundation National Economic Challenge

Economic students at Starr's Mill High School in Fayette County are the statewide winners of the David Ricardo Division 2009 Council on Economic Education (CEE)/Goldman Sachs Foundation National Economics Challenge in Georgia.

Led by economics teacher Mark DeCourcy, the team will go on to the Southeast Regional competition at the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta on April 27. Sixteen teams from across the 11-state Southeast region will travel to Atlanta, with the winner from each division moving on the national competition May 16 in New York City. Additionally, regional winners and their teachers will each receive $1,000 U.S. Savings Bonds with runner-up teams and their teachers each receiving $500 U.S. Savings Bonds.

The CEE/Goldman Sachs Foundation National Economics Challenge tests the economics knowledge of high school teams from across the country in an exciting quiz bowl-styled competition. Working individually and in teams, students answer questions related to micro-, macro-, and international economics and current events.

The competition is divided between the Adam Smith Division for students in Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, honors, or two-semester courses, and the David Ricardo Division for students enrolled in a general economics course of one semester or less.

Braelinn 14U Intermediate Tennis Team Smashing Fall Season

The Braelinn - Holleman team recently won the 14 and under intermediate division of the USTA Southern Crescent Junior Team Tennis program. The team, based at Peachtree City's Braelinn Golf Club, competed against opponents from the Newnan Country Club, Woodcreek and Highgrove subdivisions during the Fall 2008 season.
