Join fellow nature lovers on a fun and informative morning Bird Walk on Saturday, April 17th at Sams Lake Sanctuary in Fayette County. Brock Hutchins will lead the guided walk at the scenic wetland preserve owned by Southern Conservation Trust.
Hutchins has led many field trips and is the coordinator of the Peachtree City Christmas Bird Count for Audubon.
Sams Lake was donated to the Trust by the Ferrol Sams family in 1995. The shallow ponds and nesting islands draw many native and migrating bird species, including green and blue heron, egrets and hawks. Visitors may also see wild turkey, deer, beaver and armadillos.
Southern Conservation Trust is a local conservation organization that owns, manages and protects over 1300 acres of environmentally sensitive land in the Southern Crescent. The Trust manages the Flat Creek and Line Creek Nature Areas in Peachtree City and is currently developing a new preserve near the Flint River. As a community land trust the Trust also works with willing property owners to protect their land with a conservation easement that may provide significant tax benefits.
Saturday’s participants should bring binoculars and meet at the Sams Lake parking lot on Old Senoia Rd at 7:30 am. For directions or more information about community conservation and Southern Conservation Trust, visit the Trust’s website www.sctlandtrust.org.

Sams Family Receives Award for Dedication to Conservation
Pictured (l-r) are Dr. Ferrol and Dr. Helen Sams with James Waldrop Chapter DAR Conservation Chairman Kaydee Mathews.
In 1997, the Sams Family donated 56 acres to Fayette County. Known as the Sams Lake Bird Sanctuary, this land has been developed and maintained by the Southern Conservation Trust. The wetlands area on Old Senoia Rd is a great way to teach our youth about the beauty of nature.
The James Waldrop Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution was honored to present the 2009 DAR Conservation Award to the Sams family for their ongoing dedication of conserving nature. Receiving the award on behalf of the family were Drs. Ferrol and Helen Sams.

Birds of Prey Program at Sams Lake Bird Sanctuary November 8
Winged Ambassadors Environmental will bring an exceptional live wildlife show to Sams Lake Bird Sanctuary on Saturday afternoon November 8th .
Several trained non-releasable birds of prey will perform soaring free flight demonstrations over the wetlands.
Master Falconer Dale Arrowood will showcase the differences and similarities between a variety of raptor and owl families.
Birds may include eagles, hawks, owls, falcons, or vultures . These birds are not “trick animals”, they simply do what comes naturally to them.
Guests will learn about the raptors’ role as environmental indicators and the importance of protecting wildlife habitat as our wetlands, fields and forests transform into concrete and rooftops.
This exciting and educational program begins at 1pm. on Saturday November 8th . The rain date will be Saturday afternoon, December 13th.
Admission is $4 per person. Proceeds will be split between the Trust and Winged Ambassadors Environmental for care of the birds.
Sams Lake is on Old Senoia Road, south of Redwine Road just outside Fayetteville. For more information and directions, visit the Trust’s website sctlandtrust.org or email info@sctlandtrust.org .
