Four Students Are Georgia Scholars

Graduating seniors selected as Georgia Scholars embody traits of all-around excellence: high academic achievement, involvement in school activities, and participation in community service.

Four Fayette seniors have been named 2011 Georgia Scholars by the Georgia Department of Education. They are Bernadette Green, Jessica Heimann, and Lori Schachle, all from Whitewater High; and Thomas Marion, Starr’s Mill High.

Some of the requirements for Georgia Scholar consideration are a score of 1360 on the SAT or 31 on the ACT, at least a 3.75 GPA, participation in a minimum of three different interscholastic events, holding at least two different leadership positions in school-sponsored activities, and assuming a leadership role in a minimum of two different youth activities outside of school.

Local school system Georgia Scholar Program Coordinators nominate students for the recognition.

Number of Fayette County AP Scholars Top National Average

The College Board has released the results of the 2010 Advanced Placement (AP) exam results, rigorous exams that test student performance on college-level courses offered at the high school level. Of the 1,183 Fayette County Public School students who took the exams in the spring of 2010, 273 achieved an AP Scholar designation.

AP exams provide the opportunity to earn college credit, advanced placement in college or both, for successful performance on the AP exams. According to the College Board, about 18 percent of the nearly 1.7 million students worldwide who took AP exams performed at a sufficiently high level to earn an AP Scholar Award. In Fayette County, 23 percent received AP Scholar designations, topping the national average by five percent.

To qualify as an AP Scholar with Distinction, students must earn an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. Fayette County had 70 students in this designation.

To qualify as an AP Scholar with Honors, students must earn an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. The school district had 58 students qualifying for this award.

To earn a designation as an AP Scholar, students must complete three or more AP exams with grades 3 or higher. A total of 145 students met the criteria for this honor.

Georgia Scholars Announced for Fayette County

Some of Fayette County graduating seniors are among a select few in the state who will have a special seal on their diplomas when they graduate.

Five students have been named 2010 Georgia Scholars by the Georgia Department of Education. Students receiving the designation are Laura Eckhardt, Morgan Myers and Audrey Shlapak, all of Starr’s Mill High, and Christopher Murray and Shelby Threlkeld, both of Whitewater High.

A Georgia Scholar is a graduating high school senior who exhibits excellence in all phases of school life, community activities, and in the home. To be considered for the honor, a student must have a high scholastic ability, carry an exemplary course load in the four years of high school, perform excellently in all courses, successfully participate in interscholastic events of the school or community, assume an active role in extracurricular activities sponsored by the school, and exhibit good citizenship.

Fayette Student Selected as Promising Scholar

Only 15 students in the entire state, including senior Elliott Tanner of Starr’s Mill High, can lay claim to being a 2010 Promising Scholar, according to the University of Georgia.

The university’s Honors Program’s Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities (CURO) sent invitations to Georgia’s most academically outstanding high school seniors for a two-day campus visit. The visit included roundtable and panel discussions about academic and research expectations and attendance to the CURO symposium where more than 200 UGA undergraduates presented their research projects.

Promising Scholars include students who excel in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, as well as the arts, humanities and social sciences. Tanner says the experience has opened his eyes to the importance of research.

“I did not realize how important research is to the college experience until I saw it in action at the CURO symposium. Not only does research allow you to focus on something about which you have a strong interest, but also it allows you to see what working in a particular field really entails,” he explains.
