Georgia Power has turned the spotlight on Whitewater High, selecting the school as a top winner of its Campus Energy Challenge.
Five teams of students from Krystin Glover’s marketing classes developed a marketing plan to successfully get the student body to conserve energy. Some specific tasks included getting students to fan the Campus Energy by Georgia Power Facebook Page, the program’s primary marketing platform, view the YouTube “Mascots for Campus Energy” video, and implement energy conservation methods at school and at home.
Teams were judged on creativity, strategic approach and measurable results aimed at reaching the stated goals. Students who worked on the challenge are (Team 1) Lena Alston, Erin Mahlbacher, and Kayla Maxwell; (Team 2) Andrew Avrit, Helen Menchinger, and Tanner Sweatman; (Team 3) Mikayla Stewart and RoShonda Welch; (Team 4) Case Jackson, Lauren Morrison, and Katherine Spits; (Team 5) Jordan Garrett, Ryan Gray, and Tori McCrite.
The school will be recognized on the Campus Energy Facebook Page and through other promotional efforts organized by the Georgia Power’s Corporate Communications team. Whitewater High has also been given the Spotlight School Award in recognition of outstanding participation in the program.

They were already winners having been selected as one of the top three teams in the nation to pitch their employment marketing ideas to Publix Supermarket corporate executives.
Whitewater High’s Yanna Banks and Lia Poulson took second place in the DECA/Publix Brand Champion Challenge following their presentation on March 29 at the Publix headquarters in Lakeland, Florida. They were the only team from Georgia in the competition.
“This is a huge honor; the girls represented Whitewater High School, Fayette County and Georgia well,” says Krystin Glover, the school’s marketing education teacher and DECA sponsor.
As second place winners, each student received a $250 cash prize awarded by Publix to use toward their expenses to the International DECA competition in May.
DECA is an organization that aims to prepare students for careers in marketing, management, leadership, and entrepreneurship.

Whitewater Team a Semi-Finalist for Employment Branding Challenge
Publix Super Markets is looking closely at the ideas of two students for attracting young employment applicants to their stores.
Whitewater High DECA students Yanna Banks and Lia Poulson have been selected as 12 semi-finalist teams in the Publix Brand Champion Challenge, a competition open to DECA students that involves creating a fully integrated marketing program to attract 16 to 25-year-olds to apply for work at the stores. DECA is a student organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management.
Students were given a pretend budget of $250,000 to develop their plans, and were required to create a video not exceeding 10 minutes to communicate their ideas and strategies. The competition was open to students in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee.
Now the students must submit a written plan of their employment branding program. Publix will select three teams to participate in the final competition round. Those teams will be invited to make in-person presentations at the corporate offices of Publix Super Markets in Lakeland, FL in March.

Cafeteria Manager Wins Milk Cooler for School
Whitewater High School Cafeteria Manager Katherine Denfeld’s participation in “Strive for 35˚,” a milk temperature survey sponsored by the Southeast United Dairy Industry Association, Inc., has scored a new milk cooler for the school.
The purpose of the survey was to encourage food service professionals to test the temperature of their milk to ensure that it is being served between 35˚ and 40˚ F. Milk tastes best and has a longer shelf life when stored between these temperatures. Shelf life is shortened by 50 percent for every 5-degree increase in temperature over 40˚F.
The survey required four separate temperature checks using a calibrated thermometer from various locations inside each of the school’s milk coolers throughout one lunch period. Some reasons why milk may not be at the correct temperature include overloading the milk cooler, a malfunctioning cooler or leaving the lid of the cooler open between lunch periods.
By taking part in the survey, Denfeld is ensuring that Whitewater High students will choose milk by serving it the way it tastes best. Dairy foods, such as milk, supply three of the five nutrients children and adolescents need: calcium, potassium and magnesium.

Students Learn Healthy Eating Habits
Students not only learn about cooking food, but they also get information on healthy eating and nutrition through their Family and Consumer Sciences Connection classes at Whitewater Middle.
Partnering with the school’s lunch program manager, Ruchelle Helton, teacher Laurel Hinze organized a program to teach students about the healthy and nutritional benefits of their school lunches, which are prepared with reduced sodium, fat and sugar. The students also learned skills for making smart menu choices, using portion control and priority decision-making.
The lesson was connected with My Pyramid and the USDA School Lunch Plan. Students were instructed on how to navigate MyPyramid.gov and related USDA websites.
Hinze concluded the lesson with these words for her students, “Eat a school lunch today, thank our lunchroom ladies for all they do for you, and enhance your diet and education of foods by researching MyPyramid.gov.”

Sandy Creek One of Top High Schools in State for College Football
If you play football and aspire to advance to the college level, your best chances of getting there might be if you play for Sandy Creek High.
That’s what Steve Slay, a Georgia high school football fan and researcher with the Georgia High School Football Historians Association found when he complied data on schools throughout the state to see which were sending the most players into college ball.
With a total of 26 college players, Sandy Creek ranked #9 overall in a list of the top 14 Georgia high schools.
Slay also lists the top 10 schools for each classification. Sandy Creek ranked first in Class AAA. Both Fayette County High and Whitewater High made the top 10 for Class AAAA with 21 and 19 collegiate players, respectively. Fayette County is ranked #5 with Whitewater at #8.
The data is being highlighted in the next several issues of the Georgia High School Football Daily. Slay gathered data from college rosters online, so the information may not reflect complete accuracy.
Slay is continuing to research and tweak his data. When finished, he will post it on the forums at www.gavsv.com.

Whitewater Teachers Win Makeovers from The Avenue Peachtree City
Because of your votes, two Whitewater High teachers are sporting some glam looks after winning a makeover contest sponsored by The Avenue as part of its ongoing Partners in Education initiative.
Math teacher Jacqueline Mullen and healthcare science teacher Julie Wolfe represented Whitewater High in THE STYLE upGRADE challenge that was sponsored by The Avenue and Cousins Properties last month. The teachers were among 10 from the metro-Atlanta area chosen by their schools to participate.
Pictures of the teachers and their profiles were posted online, and people were asked to vote for the two teachers they wanted to win. Mullen and Wolfe had the highest number of votes.
Whitewater High’s Advanced Marketing class, a total of 21 students lead by teacher Krystin Glover, developed public relations tactics, promotional materials and online strategies to promote the contest. The class was also responsible for selecting two of the school’s teachers to participate. They did so by distributing self-nomination applications to all teachers, and interviewing each one based on pre-determined questions from The Avenue.
“THE STYLE upGRADE has been a great way for our students to obtain hands-on marketing experience while recognizing two deserving teachers. The Avenue’s continued support allows us to give our students opportunities to apply their skills outside the classroom and engage the community,” says Glover.
The teachers received their makeovers on September 30 at The Avenue Peachtree City. Talbots and White House Black Market provided their new wardrobes; hair and makeup was courtesy of Ici Paris Day Spa and Salon. The Memory Cottage took complimentary before and after photos of the winners.
“We were thrilled with the way the communities and students came together to support their teachers. The impressive number of votes the teachers received shows that students went above and beyond in their marketing efforts,” says Kim Tanalgo-Minshew, marketing manager of The Avenue Peachtree City.

Semifinalists in National Achievement Scholarship Program More than Triple in Fayette County
The number of Fayette County semifinalists in the 2011 National Achievement Scholarship Program has increased 150 percent over last year. A total of seven students have been named to the list compared to two in 2010.
Onyekwere Eke and Linsey Jackson, both of Fayette County High; Seyi Amosu and Elana Burton, both of Starr’s Mill High; Kevone Hospedales, Whitewater High; and Camara Carter and Alaisha Wellons, both of Sandy Creek High, were selected from more than 160,000 students from all parts of the U.S. who requested consideration in the program when they took the 2009 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) as high school juniors.
These students are among the 1,600 Black American high school seniors nationwide who were selected as semifinalists in the 47th annual scholarship program.
To advance to the finalist level, semifinalists must present a record of high academic performance throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the school principal, earn SAT scores that confirm the PSAT/NMSQT performance, and write an essay. The semifinalist and a school official must also complete a scholarship application in which they provide information about the student’s participation in school, and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities and educational goals.
Approximately 1,300 semifinalists are expected to advance to the finalist level in the 2011 program. Every finalist will compete for one of 700 one-time National Achievement $2,500 scholarships as well as 100 Achievement Scholarship awards underwritten by corporate and business sponsors for those who meet criteria set by the grantor.

Votes Needed to Help Two Fayette Teachers Win Makeovers
Your vote could make a huge difference in the lives of two teachers at Whitewater High.
Math teacher Jacqueline Mullen and healthcare science teacher Julie Wolf have been chosen to represent Whitewater in THE STYLE upGRADE challenge that is being sponsored by The Avenue and Cousins Properties. The two teachers are among 10 from metro-Atlanta participating.
As part of its ongoing Partners in Education initiatives, The Avenue partnered with Whitewater and four other high school marketing departments to treat two teachers to a style makeover valued at over $1,000.
A total of 21 students in Krystin Glover’s Advanced Marketing class have been working with the shopping center on the project. Teachers were asked to submit self-nomination applications, and then each one was interviewed by a panel of students from the class using pre-determined questions from The Avenue. In order to be considered for the competition, nominees had to be a teacher, administrator or counselor. The two finalists were chosen based on their dedication to students and the teaching profession, who was the most deserving, and their personal story (both suffer from debilitating diseases, Wolf with fibromyalgia and Mullen has phenylketonuria or PKU).
Now the real competition begins. The two winners will be chosen based on who receives the most community votes. The marketing students have started a grassroots marketing plan within the school system to secure online votes for the two teachers, but they need everyone’s help to ensure that both Mullen and Wolf emerge as the winners.
Voters can go to www.thestyleupgrade.com to vote as many times as they want from now until midnight September 20. Voters will also be entered to win their own STYLE upGRADE, a $250 gift card to The Avenue retailer of their choice. The teachers are not the only ones who stand to benefit from this experience. The marketing students are getting an invaluable opportunity to practice their skills in a real world setting.
“This has put the students in the highest level of marketing by not only learning the information, but also having to implement their ideas in the real world,” says Glover, Advanced Marketing teacher.

Farm to Table, Event Featuring Local Food and Chefs Benefits Land Conservation

The Trust is partnering with the farmers of the Fresh South Market, a farmers’ market open Wednesdays and Saturdays in Peachtree City. Local farms, including Two Doves Farm, Minter’s Farm and Country Gardens, will provide natural meat and locally grown produce. Chefs representing Pascal’s Bistro, Georgia Shrimp Company, My Chef Nancy and others will turn the local harvest into mouth-watering dishes.
Buying and enjoying local food, also known as “slow food” is a growing movement across the world that supports local farmers and promotes healthier eating. Trust Executive Director Abby Jordan said, “Local food uses fewer chemicals so our streams are less polluted, uses less energy to transport so our air is cleaner, is more nutritious, and helps keep our community farmland in production. Local agriculture continues the historic farming tradition in the Southern Crescent.”
“Farm to Table will feature stations of locally grown food prepared by our favorite local chefs, Georgia wines and Terrapin Beer brewed in Athens. Business sponsors include Synovus, Bank of North Georgia, Brent Scarbrough Fund, Brown Nelms & Co, Sanderson Law, The Complete Insurance Store, Senior Helpers and Charter Bank. Farms and chefs are donating their goods and time, and proceeds from ticket sales and an auction will support the Trust’s conservation work,” explained Pam Young of the Trust.
Southern Conservation Trust is a Fayette County-based conservation nonprofit that owns, manages and protects 1400 acres of farms, forests and environmentally sensitive land in the Southern Crescent. The Trust hosts environmental programs and enhances its three public preserves in Fayette County with trails, overlooks and re-introduction of native species. As a regional land trust the Trust works with willing landowners to permanently protect open space that benefits the community and can offer tax benefits for the landowner.
Farm to Table takes place Thursday, August 26th, at 6:30 p.m. at the Whitewater Creek Community Clubhouse off Redwine Road in Fayetteville. Ticket price is $75. More information is available at www.sctlandtrust.org or by calling the Trust office 770-486-7774.
