Air Force Junior ROTC at Sandy Creek High continues its tradition of excellence. The unit has been selected as one of 80 to receive the 2010-2011 Air Force Junior ROTC Outstanding Organization Award.
This marks the seventh year the unit has received the award since the program started at Sandy Creek nine years ago. Recipients must demonstrate that they have performed above normal expectations, and distinguished themselves through outstanding service to their school and community while meeting the Air Force Junior ROTC mission of producing better citizens for America.
“The cadets this year worked very hard to earn this recognition by accomplishing all the cadet goals, showing leadership within the school, and in supporting activities benefitting the local community,” says Colonel Doug Pearson, senior aerospace science instructor.
Contact Colonel Pearson at Sandy Creek High for more information about the Air Force Junior ROTC, 770-969-2840, ext. 278.

Fayette’s Graduates Perform Best at College Level
Fayette County produces the state’s top academic talent for Georgia’s public colleges and universities, according to a report released by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia.
The report tracks the cumulative college grade point average (GPA) by graduating high school of first-time freshmen that entered one of the state’s institutions in the fall of 2009. Both private and public high schools throughout Georgia are included.
McIntosh High and Starr’s Mill High are in the top 1 percent with their graduates posting average GPAs of 2.96 and 2.92, respectively, after finishing their first college semester. Schools that finished ahead of McIntosh and Starr’s Mill had fewer first-time freshmen enrolled in a state institution, 1-98, in comparison to McIntosh with 186 and Starr’s Mill with 274.
Fayette’s three other high schools also placed high on the list. Sandy Creek’s graduates posted a GPA of 2.67, placing the school in the top 12 percent in the state. Whitewater and Fayette County, with GPAs of 2.59 and 2.57, respectively, placed in the top 13 percent.
McIntosh Principal Lisa Fine is proud that graduates from her school have the highest GPA in the state compared to other public and private high schools with comparable enrollments. She credits the success to her team of teachers who prepare students to meet the demands of today’s society.
“McIntosh High School students and teachers strive for excellence in all of our endeavors. Teachers provide a rigorous curriculum that prepares students for post-secondary success and lifelong learning. In addition to teaching academic content, teachers focus on creating well-rounded students who are critical thinkers, good communicators, and visionary--equipping students for success in the real world,” says Fine.

Anyone needing advice on how to save and spend money wisely in today’s tough economic times may consider asking some local high school students.
Fourteen students at Sandy Creek High proved their financial skills by ranking in the top 20 percent on the National Financial Capability Challenge sponsored through the US Department of the Treasury. The following students are among the over 18,000 nationwide, 156 statewide, and the only ones from Fayette to place in the top 20 percent on the Challenge’s exam: Hong Cheng, Tyler Fields, Aundrey Flewellen, Ryan Hamill, Jordan Harrison, Alexander Hughes, Corey Kent, Jamarcus Mathis, Michael Munson, Jo-Marie Redley, Joshua Reynolds, Aaron Rynders, Levoyd Wardlow, and Aisha Williams.
These students, all from Jaime Nicks’ businesses and marketing classes, were among the more than 84,000 high school students nationwide who participated in the Challenge. Students learned about earning and spending, saving and investing, using credit wisely, avoiding fraud, and paying for college so that they can better navigate their financial futures.
The students and Nicks will receive awards certificates for their achievement.

Sandy Creek Selected for Pilot French Program
A partnership between two schools, Sandy Creek High and Lycee Emmanuel Héré in Nancy France, promises to provide a unique learning opportunity for students.
Sandy Creek is one of seven high schools in the state selected by the Georgia Department of Education to participate in a pilot program aimed at bringing French students in contact with their counterparts in France. Sandy Creek was chosen because of its successful French program headed up by teacher Stephane Allagnon.
For one week last month, the school hosted a French ambassador student, André Peltier, from its partner school. Peltier stayed with Sandy Creek’s American ambassador student, Omari Allen.
Peltier spent his time learning all he could about the American school system. He says he was amazed to see how well everybody got along and the amount of respect between students and faculty.
French students at Sandy Creek seized the opportunity to increase their knowledge about France and its culture. By the end of the week, the students had hammered out details pertaining the schools’ partnership, and students from both schools began communicating with each other via the Internet.
The two schools will present the results of their partnership in May to the State Department of Education.

Chisum Named Athlete of the Year
A Sandy Creek High football player has just netted his school $5,000 by being selected as the WSB-TV Sports Zone Montlick & Associates Athlete of the Year.
Alex Chisum, a senior, was selected for the honor after being one of three finalists who received the most votes from an online survey. Chisum was selected as the Sports Zone Athlete of the Week earlier in the season, making him a candidate for the grand prize. He joined 10 other Athlete’s of the Week vying for the coveted award.
From November 6-14, the public was asked to vote on their favorite Athlete of the Week. The three with the highest number of votes were named finalists. A panel of judges with experience in television production and sports broadcasting selected the winner based on the athlete’s on field contributions (75%) and the athlete’s off field contributions (25%).
Chisum excels both on field and off. Not only has he helped his team have a winning season this year, but also is a high academic achiever and member of the National Honor Society. He will attend the University of Cincinnati next year on an athletic scholarship.
In addition to the $5,000 given to the school by Montlick &Associates, Chisum received a trophy and will be featured on WSB-TV’s Sports Zone on November 19. The Sports Zone crew filmed the segment at Sandy Creek on November 16.

Sandy Creek One of Top High Schools in State for College Football
If you play football and aspire to advance to the college level, your best chances of getting there might be if you play for Sandy Creek High.
That’s what Steve Slay, a Georgia high school football fan and researcher with the Georgia High School Football Historians Association found when he complied data on schools throughout the state to see which were sending the most players into college ball.
With a total of 26 college players, Sandy Creek ranked #9 overall in a list of the top 14 Georgia high schools.
Slay also lists the top 10 schools for each classification. Sandy Creek ranked first in Class AAA. Both Fayette County High and Whitewater High made the top 10 for Class AAAA with 21 and 19 collegiate players, respectively. Fayette County is ranked #5 with Whitewater at #8.
The data is being highlighted in the next several issues of the Georgia High School Football Daily. Slay gathered data from college rosters online, so the information may not reflect complete accuracy.
Slay is continuing to research and tweak his data. When finished, he will post it on the forums at www.gavsv.com.

Sandy Creek SkillsUSA Members Win Awards at National Fair
Members of the SkillsUSA Georgia chapter at Sandy Creek High proved that they are champions during the annual Champions Rally at the Georgia National Fair in Perry October 8.
The school’s chapter brought home four awards, including a first place victory in Chapter T-shirt Design. Each year SkillsUSA Chapters create t-shirts that show off their chapter spirit. The t-shirts were judged on creativity and visual appeal; every member had to wear their chapter t-shirt to the SkillsUSA day at the fair as part of the judging criteria.
As the first place winner, the chapter’s t-shirt will be on display through the duration of the fair, which ends on October 17.
A fourth place award was earned in Chapter Banner Design. Students were charged with designing a banner that promoted chapter pride and unity while focusing on the SkillsUSA vision and mission.
A fifth place award was achieved in Pathway Poster Design. The objective of this competition was to create a poster that accurately represents the career pathways incorporated into SkillsUSA (architecture, construction, communication, transportation, public safety, and cosmetology).
Additionally, the chapter won fifth place for Overall Outstanding Chapter.
Last month chapter members earned Statesman Awards at the 2010 SkillsUSA Georgia Fall Conference. Colin Westover was one of 25 statewide members who made a perfect score on the Statesman Award test, an evaluation of a participant’s knowledge about SkillsUSA facts, history, programs, and ceremonies. Both Bria Carmichael and Jonathan Strickland were among 105 statewide members earning Statesman Awards by passing the test with an 85 percent or higher.
The fall conference allowed members the opportunity to increase their leadership abilities, professionalism, community service, and the skill to be a greater champion in their chosen career pathway. Sandy Creek’s Addie Davis was among the eight-member State Officer Team that organized the conference’s activities.
SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit organization of students, teachers and industry, working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. SkillsUSA helps high school and college students enrolled in career and technical education programs to excel by teaching employability skills such as communication, problem solving, and leadership in conjunction with their trade, technical and service occupations skills.

Semifinalists in National Achievement Scholarship Program More than Triple in Fayette County
The number of Fayette County semifinalists in the 2011 National Achievement Scholarship Program has increased 150 percent over last year. A total of seven students have been named to the list compared to two in 2010.
Onyekwere Eke and Linsey Jackson, both of Fayette County High; Seyi Amosu and Elana Burton, both of Starr’s Mill High; Kevone Hospedales, Whitewater High; and Camara Carter and Alaisha Wellons, both of Sandy Creek High, were selected from more than 160,000 students from all parts of the U.S. who requested consideration in the program when they took the 2009 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) as high school juniors.
These students are among the 1,600 Black American high school seniors nationwide who were selected as semifinalists in the 47th annual scholarship program.
To advance to the finalist level, semifinalists must present a record of high academic performance throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the school principal, earn SAT scores that confirm the PSAT/NMSQT performance, and write an essay. The semifinalist and a school official must also complete a scholarship application in which they provide information about the student’s participation in school, and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities and educational goals.
Approximately 1,300 semifinalists are expected to advance to the finalist level in the 2011 program. Every finalist will compete for one of 700 one-time National Achievement $2,500 scholarships as well as 100 Achievement Scholarship awards underwritten by corporate and business sponsors for those who meet criteria set by the grantor.

Another Award-Winning Year for Sandy Creek’s ROTC
The Air Force Junior ROTC program at Sandy Creek High is celebrating the start of a new school year with the addition of several prestigious awards earned by cadets this summer.
Top honors for outstanding efforts in leadership and academics were received by nine of the 23 cadets attending the Summer Leadership School at Converse College in Spartanburg, S.C. Sandy Creek walked away with the most awards earned by the 27 schools and 297 cadets attending. The school provides realistic training for leadership, fitness, group interaction, and team building.
The unit also earned the 2009-10 Air Force Junior ROTC Outstanding Organization Award. The award is earned based on cadet developed goals for the school year and through completion of those goals. It recognizes units that have performed above normal expectations and have distinguished themselves through outstanding service to their school and community while meeting the Air Force Junior ROTC mission of producing better citizens for America. The unit was one of 207 in the nation to receive the award.
The objectives of the Junior ROTC program are to educate and train high school cadets in citizenship and life skills; promote community service; instill responsibility, character, and self-discipline through character education; and to provide instruction in air and space fundamentals. Enrollment is open to all students who are in the ninth grade and higher, physically fit, and are citizens or nationals of the United States.
Air Force Junior ROTC is in 884 high schools across the United States and at selected schools in Europe, the Pacific and Puerto Rico. Junior ROTC enrollment includes more than 110,000 cadets.

The winners are (first place) Linda Wilkins; (second place) Nia Decaille and (third place) Camara Carter. Their winning essays will be published in the “Georgia Voyager” magazine. Over 2,000 Georgia students wrote essays on this year’s theme, “Georgia Authors.”
The winners were recognized at a special Georgia History Day ceremony held at the Georgia Department of Education in May. Awards are given to first, second, third and fourth place winners at the middle and high school levels. The competition is open to all Georgia students in grades 6-12.

Horatio Alger Scholars Named in Fayette County
Overcoming great obstacles and demonstrating strength of character has earned two graduating high school seniors a scholarship from the Horatio Alger Georgia Scholarship Program.
Samuel Yi of Sandy Creek High and Iesha White of Fayette County High are among the 50 graduates in the state who received a $5,000 scholarship for use at any accredited institution in the United States.
In addition to overcoming hardships, candidates for the scholarship must also be involved in co-curricular and community activities, and demonstrate a high level of academic achievement.
Founded in 1947, the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans continues to fulfill its mission of honoring the achievements of outstanding individuals in our society who have succeeded in spite of adversity and of encouraging young people to pursue their dreams through higher education. The Horatio Alger Association offers three annual scholarship programs at the national, state and graduate levels.

Sandy Creek Students Top in Nation at Handling Personal Finances
When business teacher Jaime Nicks at Sandy Creek High heard about the newly launched National Financial Capability Challenge, she couldn’t pass it up.
Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and Education Secretary Arne Duncan announced the Challenge in December 2009 to promote financial education among high school students across the country. More than 76,000 high school students and 2,500 educators participated.
Students in Nicks’ class proved they could successfully manage their personal finances by scoring in the top 20 percent of all students nationwide. A total of 12 students at Sandy Creek were among 14,433 in the country and 87 in Georgia who ranked in the top 20 percent. The students are Arthur Cisneros, Stefon Combs, Tommy Harvey, Chris Matthews, James Morgan, Christopher Powell, John Register, Joshua Reynolds, Devin Smith, Michael Spaulding, A’isha Williams, and Cory Woods.
Nicks makes it her goal to educate her students on all aspects of finances so that they are better prepared for the future. This includes saving for college, knowing about credit and being conscientious consumers.
“No matter what age a person is, one of the most common hardships in life is falling into financial pitfalls. Through the Challenge, I was able to assess how my students compare to those around the nation. We are obviously on the right track. I am very proud of their scores,” says Nicks.
Each of the students will receive official award certificates. They were the only participants from Fayette County in the top 20 percent.
