North Fayette Home Invasion Update

On January 12, 2011 Fayette County Sheriff’s Office with the assistance of the Fayetteville Police Department made two arrests in reference to a home invasion at a north Fayette County home. The incident took place when Fayette County Sheriff’s Office Deputies responded to a home invasion in progress where an East Point Police Officer was held at gun point inside his home by two masked suspects.

On January 12, 2011 at approximately 10:08 PM Fayette County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a residence located in north Fayette County when the victim, who is an East Point Police Officer called 911 and told the Fayette County dispatcher that two suspects wearing masks, displayed a gun and robbed him inside his home.

When Fayette County Sheriff’s deputies arrived at the incident location they found the victim duct taped inside of his home with a minor injury to his forehead. The victim told Fayette County deputies at least two masked suspects forced their way into his home displaying a shotgun. The victim said that the two suspects then bound his hands and feet with duct tape where they proceeded to steal a flat screen television, a hand gun and numerous other electronic devices before fleeing the scene. After the suspects fled the scene the victim said he was able to gain access to telephone while still being duct taped where he called 911. The victim gave the Fayette County Sheriff’s deputies a physical description of the two suspects but was unable to provide them with any possible vehicle description.

At 10:19 PM a Fayetteville Police Officer who had been monitoring the home invasion call on the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office radio frequency was traveling on Hwy 54 near Burch Road when he observed a small passenger car driving at a high rate of speed with two occupants that matched the suspect description given by the victim of the home invasion. The vehicle attempted to elude the Fayetteville Police Officer where a short pursuit took place. The Fayetteville Police Department was able to stop the vehicle on Chase Drive in the City of Fayetteville. The Fayetteville Police Officer located items taken in the home invasion inside the vehicle along with the mask and shot gun which were used in the commission of the home invasion.

Fayette County Investigators have arrested Clifton Jerome Scott, 21, and Brandon Christopher Herston, 21, both being from Fayetteville and charged them with Armed Robbery, Burglary, False Imprisonment, Possession of a Firearm in the Commission of a Crime and Aggravated Assault. The Fayetteville Police Department has charged Scott with numerous traffic related offenses which occurred while operating the suspect vehicle. The two suspects are currently being held in the Fayette County Jail without bond.

The victim in this crime was treated and released by Fayette County EMS at the incident location.

If anyone has any additional information on this or similar incidents please notify Detective E. Harper at the Fayette County Sheriff Office 770-716-4763 / eharper@fayettecountyga.gov.

Check out the new Fayette Sheriff website!

I ran into Sheriff Hannah tonight at the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce Expo. And no, I didn't run into him with my car or knock him down! I was at the Expo table for the Clothes Less Traveled Thrift Shop as he was making the rounds. We chatted for a few minutes about a number of Fayette issues, one of them being the new website the Sheriff's office has been working on.

When I got home, unpacked, and settled in, I popped over to see what it looked like. I spent more time than I intended wandering around the new site. I was impressed. It's not 100% complete yet, but the information links kept me clicking!

I checked my neighborhood to see if there were any sex offenders nearby. Nope.

Then I popped over to the link titled "Crime Mapping". I was able to put in my address and find out where crimes had occurred around my home. I got nosy and expanded the viewing area to see the kind of things going on outside my immediate area. I'll be clicking that link again!

I looked under the "Records Section" to see crime statistics and then clicked on a few others under the heading just to see what kind of information was offered. Good to know it's there in case I need it some day.

Of course I looked at Fayette County's Most Wanted Fugitives. Didn't recognize anyone...

There are some areas that are currently being worked on (Kids Page, Fiscal Information and others), but they're coming.

Oh, and I also signed up under the "Community Notifications" tab to get alerts from the Sheriff's office. I'm already getting them for Peachtree City and Tyrone so was happy to discover I could add the areas outside the cities. It's great info and I highly encourage everyone in Fayette County to sign up. They can text alerts and / or email them to you.

It looks like this is going to be the kind of site you'll want to stop by and "visit" more than once. They have links to quite a few state and local agencies, contact info in the event you want to call the Sheriff's Dept., employment opportunities, crime prevention tips... the list is long.

Be sure to click on "Office of the Sheriff" and then click "History of the Office of Sheriff". It's interesting reading.

I think the website is going to be a valuable resource for Fayette residents. Go take a peek.

Operation Pill Drop - Peachtree City and Fayetteville

Take-back event offers the public a safe and secure way to dispose of their medications.

Peachtree City:

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, Safe Kids of Georgia, and the Peachtree City Police Department are sponsoring an Operation Pill Drop location in Peachtree City on September 25th, 2010, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. The event will be held in the parking lot of K-Mart, located in the Braelinn Village Shopping Center at 400 Crosstown Drive, Peachtree City, GA.

This is a prescription drug take-back event where the public can dispose of expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs or over-the-counter medications to keep them out of the wrong hands. Operation Pill Drop offers the public a free, anonymous, and convenient option for disposing these medications to protect their families and the environment. Unintentional poisoning from prescription medications is on the rise. Every year, over 2 million poison exposures are reported in the U.S. In 2009, over 51% of reported poisonings in Georgia, involved children ages 5 and under.

Please note that Operation Pill Drop cannot accept needles/sharps, syringes with needles, thermometers, IV bags, bloody or infectious waste, personal care products, empty containers, inhalers, medical equipment or hydrogen peroxide.

For more information, visit www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov or www.safekidsgeorgia.org.

Fayette County Sheriff's Office, Fayetteville:

The Fayette County Sheriff Office has partnered with the Federal Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and other government, community, public health and law enforcement partners to announce a nationwide prescription drug “Take-Back” initiative that seeks to prevent increased pill abuse and theft.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office will be collecting potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs for destruction on Saturday, September 25th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, 155 Johnson Avenue, Fayetteville, Georgia. The service is free and anonymous; there are no questions asked or paperwork required. Participants in this initiative are simply asked to bring there unused or unwanted prescription drugs to this location where they can be destroyed.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office will have a “drive-though” type setup in the Sheriff’s Office Parking lot on Johnson Avenue nearest to South Jeff Davis Drive. Participants can drive through and not get out of their car.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Many Americans are not aware that medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are increasing at alarming rates, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, many Americans do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medicine, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away – both potential safety and health hazards. You can make your home safe and strengthen your community by participating in this nationwide prescription take-back program.

Honor Flight Fayette Presents Flag to Sheriff’s Department

Pictured left to right:  Sergeant Doug Hardy, Investigator Brent Lonkert, Investigator Chad Wallace, Captain Brian Eubanks, Sheriff Wayne Hannah, Honor Flight vice president Mark Buckner and Honor Flight Fayette president Gail Sparrow

On each flight Honor Flight Fayette makes, one or two United States flags make the trip with the veterans to the World War II memorial and back to Fayetteville. After they return, the board makes the sometimes difficult decision as to which group that has helped HFF should receive the flag. The difficulty is due to the fact that so many individuals and groups have helped make these trips possible.

If you took a literal count of each person who has helped Honor Flight Fayette, it would number in the hundreds, maybe even a thousand. That includes each person who donated time, money, ideas and each and every effort – no matter how small or large. Groups like the Patriot Guard, VFW and American Legion posts, schools and others have contributed. Then there have been individuals who donated large and small amounts of money to help, or donated their time and talents. It would take a very long article to list the many ways people in Fayette county have made this huge project so successful.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s department has been there for each and every trip Honor Flight Fayette has made to D.C. Assisted by Fayetteville and Peachtree City police, they escort the buses of World War II veterans to the airport very early in the morning and back to Fayetteville late that same day. The veterans are always in awe of the traffic that is stopped so they can make this trip quickly and safely. Without the Sheriff’s office, this would not be possible. This is one of the reasons they were chosen to receive a flag at a reception held for the veterans and guardians who made the trip in May.

September 15th will mark the 7th and final trip by Honor Flight Fayette to D.C. with a group of about 70 veterans. This will make a total of almost 500 vets that have made this trip since the first one in 2008.

Honor Flight Fayette would like to encourage anyone who can to line the streets with their flags on September 15th and give this last group the send off they deserve. The buses will leave Fayetteville First United Methodist Church at 6:30 a.m. and will travel Hwy 54 west, turn right on Hwy 85 north and then north on Hwy 314 to the airport. And, of course, the Fayette County Sheriff’s office will be there again to help.
