Check out the new Fayette Sheriff website!

I ran into Sheriff Hannah tonight at the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce Expo. And no, I didn't run into him with my car or knock him down! I was at the Expo table for the Clothes Less Traveled Thrift Shop as he was making the rounds. We chatted for a few minutes about a number of Fayette issues, one of them being the new website the Sheriff's office has been working on.

When I got home, unpacked, and settled in, I popped over to see what it looked like. I spent more time than I intended wandering around the new site. I was impressed. It's not 100% complete yet, but the information links kept me clicking!

I checked my neighborhood to see if there were any sex offenders nearby. Nope.

Then I popped over to the link titled "Crime Mapping". I was able to put in my address and find out where crimes had occurred around my home. I got nosy and expanded the viewing area to see the kind of things going on outside my immediate area. I'll be clicking that link again!

I looked under the "Records Section" to see crime statistics and then clicked on a few others under the heading just to see what kind of information was offered. Good to know it's there in case I need it some day.

Of course I looked at Fayette County's Most Wanted Fugitives. Didn't recognize anyone...

There are some areas that are currently being worked on (Kids Page, Fiscal Information and others), but they're coming.

Oh, and I also signed up under the "Community Notifications" tab to get alerts from the Sheriff's office. I'm already getting them for Peachtree City and Tyrone so was happy to discover I could add the areas outside the cities. It's great info and I highly encourage everyone in Fayette County to sign up. They can text alerts and / or email them to you.

It looks like this is going to be the kind of site you'll want to stop by and "visit" more than once. They have links to quite a few state and local agencies, contact info in the event you want to call the Sheriff's Dept., employment opportunities, crime prevention tips... the list is long.

Be sure to click on "Office of the Sheriff" and then click "History of the Office of Sheriff". It's interesting reading.

I think the website is going to be a valuable resource for Fayette residents. Go take a peek.

Flu Vaccination Program Offered at Seven Fayette County Elementary Schools

The Flu-Free Schools program is coming to the Fayette County Public School System October 19-22.

The program is a pilot that is being sponsored by District 4 Public Health with Academic Clinics and the Georgia Department of Community Health to offer the seasonal flu vaccine, using FluMist (no needles), on-site at seven of the school system’s elementary schools. FluMist is gently sprayed in the nose, where the flu enters the body; it is designed to stimulate the body’s natural defenses without causing disease.

A total of 13 school systems are participating in the program. Due to the large participation, the number of elementary school sites in each county is limited.

Last week informational packets were sent home with students from the following participating elementary schools: Huddleston, North Fayette, Peachtree City, Robert J. Burch, Sara Harp Minter, Peeples and Spring Hill. This is a closed program for only the participating schools’ students and staff; it is not open to the general public.

Parents must sign a consent form and submit the fee amount in order for their child to receive the vaccine. A clinic will be set up at each school and staffed by medical professionals who will administer the nasal-mist vaccine. Clinics will be conducted during school hours. Participating students will be out of their classrooms, accompanied by their teachers, for 5-10 minutes.

The purpose of the program is to keep students and teachers healthy and in school by reducing the number of days missed from school and work. If the pilot is successful, the program may be offered to more schools next year, according School Health Specialist Debbie King.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that all children ages six months to 18 years receive an annual flu vaccination. The seasonal flu vaccine does not protect against influenza A (H1N1).

Fayette County School System Partners with US Census

The Fayette County Public School System has joined the US Census Bureau’s Partnership Program in order to increase awareness among students, parents, employees and residents in the Fayette community about the importance of participating in the upcoming 2010 Census.

Census partners are government, nonprofit, corporate or community organizations that have formally pledged their commitment to share the 2010 Census message and mobilize constituents in support of the Census Bureau’s goal of achieving a complete count.

As a partner, Fayette County Public Schools will assist in informing residents about the upcoming population count by setting up informational tables and booths at school and system-wide events and distributing promotional materials to employees and parents.

Through the Census in Schools program, age-specific materials will be distributed to teachers for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Materials include maps displaying population counts and other demographic information; and lesson plans grouped by grade and correlated to national standards for math, geography and language arts. Materials that integrate census information with social studies and community participation will also be available. Teachers can customize these materials to fit with lessons they are teaching.

Census questionnaires will be delivered to households in March 2010 and should be mailed back to the Census Bureau by April 1. The 2010 questionnaire will be one of the shortest in history, consisting of 10 questions and taking about 10 minutes to complete. Strict laws protect the confidentiality of respondents and the information they provide.

The 2010 Census is a count of everyone living in the United States and is mandated by the U.S. Constitution. Census data guide the distribution of more than $400 billion in federal funds to local, state and tribal governments each year. They're also used to determine Congressional apportionment and help guide planning decisions such as the placement of schools, hospitals, transportation, and business and industrial development.
