April = Art + Awards for Young Artists

The month of April has brought showers of awards for visual arts students at Fayette County High.

The school was the only one from Fayette, and just one of 35 statewide, to have student work juried into the Georgia High School Ceramic Symposium held April 16 at the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts in Newnan. The two students whose pieces were showcased were Amy Donadeo and Katie Trebendis.

Katie Trebendis, along with fellow student AJ Klemp, has been accepted into the Allstate Honors Art Exhibition that will be held at Kennesaw State University May 6-7. Once again, Fayette County High is the only high school in the county to have artwork accepted into the competition. The school’s students are up against others from some of the best art schools in the state including the DeKalb School for the Art and Savannah Arts Academy.

“This event is very competitive. It is a great honor for our students to be selected and have their work up against the best student artists in the state,” says Pamela Woodworth-Watkins, Fayette County High’s visual art and design teacher.

Also, Jeni Hill was Fayette County High’s winner in the Creative Self-Expression Show sponsored by the Great Frame Up of Peachtree City. Her work is being shipped to the national competition in Los Angeles where it will be judged by the show’s national spokesperson, actress and artist Jane Seymour, along with a judging panel. Two winners will receive a $2,000 scholarship.

Operation: Pill Drop - This Saturday!

The Fayette County Sheriff Office has partnered with the Federal Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and other government, community, public health and law enforcement partners to announce a nationwide prescription drug “Take-Back” initiative that seeks to prevent increased pill abuse and theft.

Last September, Americans turned in 242,000 pounds—121 tons—of prescription drugs at nearly 4,100 sites operated by the DEA and more than 3,000 state and local law enforcement partners, including the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office will be collecting potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs for destruction on Saturday, April 30th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, 155 Johnson Avenue, Fayetteville, Georgia.

The service is free and anonymous; there are no questions asked or paperwork required. Participants in this initiative are simply asked to bring their unused or unwanted prescription drugs to this location where they can be destroyed.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office will have a “drive-though” type setup in the Sheriff’s Office Parking lot on Johnson Avenue nearest to South Jeff Davis Drive. Participants can drive through and not get out of their car. No needles or Bio-Hazardous materials will be accepted.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Many Americans are not aware that medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are increasing at alarming rates, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, many Americans do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medicine, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away – both potential safety and health hazards. You can make your home safe and strengthen your community by participating in this nationwide prescription take-back program.

School System Embraces Changes for Education Community Conversations in the Works

“Where Excellence Counts” is the motto of the Fayette County Public School System. Increasing “excellence” in education for all students is exactly why the Fayette County Board of Education has unanimously adopted a resolution supporting a statewide vision to transform public education in Georgia.

Starting this fall, the school system will host a series of community conversations about the vision and what impact it could have on the future of education in Fayette County.

The vision is part of a two-year project of the Georgia School Boards Association and the Georgia School Superintendents Association aimed at changing how Georgia plans for, delivers, sustains, and provides public education for children from birth through completion of high school. The two organizations held meetings throughout the state soliciting the views of all stakeholders, including citizens and students, about the current state of public education and their hopes for the future.

The full report of the findings is Phase 1 of the project, titled “A Vision for Public Education: Equity and Excellence,” and is available on the project website: www.visionforpubliced.org. Phase 2 involves study of the recommendations at the local level, and finally implementation.

The school system plans to organize several community conversations next school year to include local businesses and organizations, students, parents, educators, residents (both with and without students in the system), and all persons interested in helping to improve the county’s educational program.

It is important for the county to continue to more forward, seeking out innovation and offering quality, well-rounded educational experiences in classrooms in every school, every day. Not just parents and students, but every resident in the county directly benefits from an effective school system. A solid educational system keeps home values high and brings businesses to the county, as well as prepares children to become responsible citizens and contributors to the community and society.

Specific dates for the community conversations will be announced at the beginning of the 2011-2012 school year. In the meantime, the community is encouraged to learn more by watching a video and reading complete information on the transformation project on the Vision for Public Education website, www.visionforpubliced.org. A link to the vision website is available on the FCBOE webpage, www.fcboe.org.

Cancer Wellness Walk a Success

The Cancer Wellness Walk, held in Peachtree City on Saturday April 9th, was a great success. In total, the event raised over $35,000 for Cancer Wellness programs at Piedmont Fayette Hospital. There were over 350 Walkers on hand for the event.

The Walk was the community benefit project of the 2010/2011 Leadership Fayette Class of the Fayette Chamber of Commerce. The Leadership Fayette class spent seven months planning the event and was thrilled with the outcome.

“We worked very hard on the Walk and were happy to see so many walkers come out. We were also very thankful for our sponsors and wouldn’t have reached our fundraising goal without their generous support,” said Leadership Fayette class member Abby Jordan.

The Walk’s title sponsor was Chick-fil-A. Georgia Power, NCR and T & O Refrigeration were platinum level sponsors. The Walk also received gold sponsorships from Cargo Brokers International, Fellowship of Love Church, Heritage Automotive, Harris, Fritz and Associates, Piedmont Fayette Hospital and The Southern Federal Credit Union. Fayetteville City Councilman Larry Dell raised over $1,500 by offering to shave his head and mustache in support of the cause and his sister who is facing breast cancer for the second time.

Cancer Wellness offers comprehensive, complementary services and programs to anyone affected by cancer at any phase in his or her cancer journey at no charge. The funds raised by the Walk will specifically support Cancer Wellfit™, an exercise program developed to improve the physical health and quality of life for people with cancer.

“Our Cancer Wellness community is so appreciative to the 2011 class of Leadership Fayette and the Fayette Chamber of Commerce for all of their hard work and dedication,” said Tavari Taylor who manages the Cancer Wellness Center at Piedmont Fayette Hospital.

Gumerson Named Fayette’s Top Teacher

Aimee Gumerson (right) with Shelly Dowse seconds after hearing her name announced as the 2011 Fayette County Teacher of the Year.

Would it be a math or one of two science teachers as the next Fayette County Teacher of the Year? That long awaited question was answered Thursday night.

All eyes were fixed on Superintendent Jeff Bearden as he opened the sealed envelope and announced that Aimee Gumerson, a math teacher at Fayette Middle, had been selected as the 2011 Fayette County Teacher of the Year (TOTY).

Keelan Seabolt and Shelly Dowse, a physics teacher at Sandy Creek high and a chemistry teacher at McIntosh High, respectively, were the other contenders.

Gumerson thanked a long list of teachers who she said helped pave the way for her success, including her mother, grandparents, and many Fayette County educators.

“At an occasion like this, it's nearly impossible to thank everyone who played a part in my being right here right now. In looking back over my life and my career, school and teachers and education and learning have been at the center of my world for as long as I can remember,” she said.

Gumerson talked about how her life has come full circle, as she now teaches at the very school she attended as a student. She also shared her memories of some favorite teachers.

“I remember Ms. Hope Callahan who taught poetry with such creativity that I still have the poetry booklet I created in seventh grade. I recall Gladys Brown who knew that I didn't care for science, but by having me draw pictures and tell her about them, actually made the inside of a frog interesting to me. I remember struggling to hit a softball or to play basketball without travelling (I think that's what you call it when you walk with the ball without dribbling it) and the patience that Lance Bowen and Phyllis Hutsell had that made me still enjoy coming to PE just the same,” she recalled.

Gumerson said reflecting back on how certain educators impacted her life made her realize the power teachers have in the classroom.

“In every little thing we do or don't do, we help others or we don't. Do not underestimate the power that you have, that we all have, every single moment with every single student to make a difference, and do not underestimate the difference that each of you have made in my life. I cannot thank you enough,” she told the audience.

As Fayette’s 2011 TOTY, Gumerson will represent the county in the Georgia TOTY competition next spring.

Fayette’s annual TOTY program honors the county’s 29 teachers of the year from each elementary, middle and high school. The program would not be possible without the generous contributions of local businesses and organizations.

The venue for this year’s ceremony was provided by New Hope Baptist Church, North Campus.
Nominees from each school received plaques from the Coca Cola Bottling Company and a portrait courtesy of Life Touch Photography. Also, Dell Computer, Inc. donated computers to all three finalists and Allan Vigil Ford in Fayetteville gave $500 to both runners up and $1,000 to the winner. Additionally, the winner received a commemorative ring from Balfour and roundtrip airfare for two from AirTran Airlines.

Other top sponsors included Chick-fil-A, the Rotary Club of Peachtree City, Delta Community Credit Union, Southern Federal Credit Union, The Avenue Peachtree City, and numerous other local businesses and organizations.

Students Earn National Achievement Scholarships

Five students from Fayette County High, Sandy Creek High, Starr’s Mill High, and Whitewater High are among 700 nationwide receiving National Achievement Scholarships through the 2011 National Achievement Scholarship Program, a competition for African American high school students.

Onyekwere Eke and Linsey Jackson, both from Fayette County High; Camara Carter, Sandy Creek High; Elana Burton, Starr’s Mill High; and Kevone Hospedales, Whitewater High, are all recipients of a $2,500, single payment scholarship. The students plan to use their scholarship to fund their education in the following areas: Onyekwere plans to major in computer science, Linsey’s probable major is chemical engineering, Camara is looking into veterinary medicine, Elana is leaning toward international business, and Kevone is planning a career in software engineering.

More than 160,000 students entered the 2011 National Achievement Program by requesting consideration when they took the 2009 Preliminary SAT/National Merit
Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) as high school juniors. In September 2010, approximately 1,600 of the highest scorers were named semifinalists on a regional basis. To continue in the competition, semifinalists had to fulfill requirements for finalist standing, which included having a record of consistently high academic performance, being endorsed and recommended by an official of their high school, earning SAT scores that confirm the PSAT/NMSQT performance and submitting an essay about personal interests, attainments and goals.

Approximately 1,300 semifinalists advanced to the finalist level. Achievement Scholar awardees are the finalist candidates judged to have the strongest record of accomplishments and greatest potential for college academic success.

Starr's Mill Student Excels at Social Studies, Earns Spot in Coveted Program

Social studies can be a difficult subject for most people. In fact, an article published last month in Newsweek, “How Dumb Are We,” reveals the results of 1,000 Americans who were given the U.S. Citizenship Test; 38 percent failed.

Starr’s Mill High student Julia Borjeson would have no problems acing the test considering that she conquered three selection processes to become a 2011 Governor’s Honors Finalist in social studies. She is one of only three students in Fayette to earn a finalist slot in the subject.

The Governor’s Honors Program provides intellectually gifted and artistically talented high school students challenging and enriching educational opportunities not usually available during the regular school year. Activities give participants opportunities to acquire the skills, knowledge and attitudes to become independent, life-long learners.

The selection process is lengthy and begins in the fall when teachers from each high school nominate students for outstanding performance in particular areas of study. The nominated students advance to county-level interviews where semifinalists are selected. The semifinalists go through a final round of interviews at the state level, which determines those who will be chosen for the program.

Fayette County has a total of 19 students who were selected for the 2011 Governor’s Honors Program in the areas of social studies, biology, communicative arts, German, mathematics, music, Spanish, technology, and theatre.

In all incidents, the suspect is described as a white male, 35-40 years of age, and weighing approximately 150-160 lbs. Although his clothing could change over the days, he was wearing a sweatshirt and blue jeans. Additionally, his is wearing dark glasses and a baseball cap.

Fayetteville robber strikes again at Rite Aid

A white male walked into the Rite Aid store at 975 GA Hwy 54 W at approximately 4:24 PM on Thursday April 7, 2011 and robbed the store of an undetermined amount of cash. The male brought a candy bar to the register and when the cashier opened the register, the man grabbed money from the register. The cashier initially fought back but the male told her he had a gun and she relented. The male then ran out the front door and fled west through the parking lot into a wooded area. Fayetteville Police Officers and Fayette County Sheriff’s Deputies were on scene within minutes and began a search of the area. Fayette County K-9 units were able to track the male a short distance and it is believed he had a vehicle waiting. The male is described as a white male between 35-40 years of age, 5’10”-6’0” with a slim build and unshaven face. The male was wearing blue jeans, a gray sweat shirt/pullover, a dark colored baseball cap and sports sunglasses. Police believe the suspect is the same male who robbed Jan’s Florist earlier in the morning. Police were able to obtain video footage of the suspect from the Rite Aid surveillance system. Anyone with information about the robbery is encouraged to contact Fayetteville Detective Mike Whitlow at (770) 461-4441.

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the National Science Teachers Association chose the participants based on their qualifications, dedication to inspiring students at an early age, and their overall commitment to enhancing the teaching profession.

Costa is the only teacher from Fayette County, and one of 13 from Georgia, selected to attend the academy. Only 200 nationwide were chosen.

The Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy will take place July 17-22 at Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, New Jersey.
