Whitewater Students Highlighted in Leading Invention Magazine
The InvenTeam at Whitewater High has been getting a lot of exposure since winning a $10,000 grant from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to develop a solar food dehydrator for developing countries.
Their latest appearance was in the July 2009 edition of Inventor’s Digest, a print and online publication for inventors that focuses on delivering cutting-edge information to help its readers succeed. The magazine is distributed to 116 different countries.
The Whitewater InvenTeam includes Andrew Barth, Zuri Coleman, Jacob Cotton, Hendri deBeer, Matt Doss, Chris Sandwich, Kavita Singh and Eric Vogel. Carolyn Smith is the advisor and Ted Wansley is the co-sponsor.
The article explains the team’s project and their successes and challenges in developing the prototype, which not only preserves food but also converts vapors from the dehydration process into potable water.
The team hopes to get a working prototype into the field so that it can get more grants to continue the project. The prototype was revealed this past spring during EurekaFest at MIT.

Flu Vaccination Program Offered at Seven Fayette County Elementary Schools
The Flu-Free Schools program is coming to the Fayette County Public School System October 19-22.
The program is a pilot that is being sponsored by District 4 Public Health with Academic Clinics and the Georgia Department of Community Health to offer the seasonal flu vaccine, using FluMist (no needles), on-site at seven of the school system’s elementary schools. FluMist is gently sprayed in the nose, where the flu enters the body; it is designed to stimulate the body’s natural defenses without causing disease.
A total of 13 school systems are participating in the program. Due to the large participation, the number of elementary school sites in each county is limited.
Last week informational packets were sent home with students from the following participating elementary schools: Huddleston, North Fayette, Peachtree City, Robert J. Burch, Sara Harp Minter, Peeples and Spring Hill. This is a closed program for only the participating schools’ students and staff; it is not open to the general public.
Parents must sign a consent form and submit the fee amount in order for their child to receive the vaccine. A clinic will be set up at each school and staffed by medical professionals who will administer the nasal-mist vaccine. Clinics will be conducted during school hours. Participating students will be out of their classrooms, accompanied by their teachers, for 5-10 minutes.
The purpose of the program is to keep students and teachers healthy and in school by reducing the number of days missed from school and work. If the pilot is successful, the program may be offered to more schools next year, according School Health Specialist Debbie King.
The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that all children ages six months to 18 years receive an annual flu vaccination. The seasonal flu vaccine does not protect against influenza A (H1N1).

Fayette County School System Partners with US Census
The Fayette County Public School System has joined the US Census Bureau’s Partnership Program in order to increase awareness among students, parents, employees and residents in the Fayette community about the importance of participating in the upcoming 2010 Census.
Census partners are government, nonprofit, corporate or community organizations that have formally pledged their commitment to share the 2010 Census message and mobilize constituents in support of the Census Bureau’s goal of achieving a complete count.
As a partner, Fayette County Public Schools will assist in informing residents about the upcoming population count by setting up informational tables and booths at school and system-wide events and distributing promotional materials to employees and parents.
Through the Census in Schools program, age-specific materials will be distributed to teachers for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Materials include maps displaying population counts and other demographic information; and lesson plans grouped by grade and correlated to national standards for math, geography and language arts. Materials that integrate census information with social studies and community participation will also be available. Teachers can customize these materials to fit with lessons they are teaching.
Census questionnaires will be delivered to households in March 2010 and should be mailed back to the Census Bureau by April 1. The 2010 questionnaire will be one of the shortest in history, consisting of 10 questions and taking about 10 minutes to complete. Strict laws protect the confidentiality of respondents and the information they provide.
The 2010 Census is a count of everyone living in the United States and is mandated by the U.S. Constitution. Census data guide the distribution of more than $400 billion in federal funds to local, state and tribal governments each year. They're also used to determine Congressional apportionment and help guide planning decisions such as the placement of schools, hospitals, transportation, and business and industrial development.
For more information about the 2010 Census, go to 2010census.gov.

Number of Fayette County Scholarship Semifinalists Almost Double
The number of semifinalists for the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program has nearly doubled from last year.
A total of 13 seniors from Fayette County, McIntosh, Starr’s Mill and Whitewater high schools are among the approximately 16,000 semifinalists nationwide competing in the 55th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Last year seven Fayette students were semifinalists.
The 2010 semifinalists are (Fayette County High) Sonika Reddy; (McIntosh High) Lauren Anderson, Christopher Hrvoj, Nicholas Marette, Timothy Morris, Martine van Voorthuysen, Matthew Winn, Shawn Yavari; (Starr’s Mill High) George Hagler, Jessica Lambing, Kathryn McCord, Elliot Tanner; (Whitewater High) Patrick Loeffler.
These scholastically talented high school seniors have the opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,200 Merit Scholarship awards worth $35 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements and advance to the finalist level of the competition. About 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to become finalists, and approximately half of the finalists will be selected as Merit Scholarship winners.
More than 1.5 million juniors in nearly 22,000 U.S. high schools entered the 2010 National Merit Program by taking the 2008 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, which represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state. The number of semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.
To become a finalist, a semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the school principal and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier qualifying test performance. The semifinalist and a school official must submit a detailed scholarship application, which includes the student’s self-descriptive essay and information about the semifinalist’s participation and leadership in school and community activities.
Merit scholarship winners of 2010 will be announced April-July.

Young Fayette County Poet One of 10 in US to Win Literary Honor
Huddleston Elementary in Peachtree City broke a record in the spring when they had the largest number of students in the school’s history, 19 to be exact, with their original poetry accepted for publication in Creative Communication’s anthology, “A Celebration of Poets.”
Now Huddleston celebrates another honor as they have just learned that one of the 19 students has been named a Top Ten Poet. Jack Bragg, third grade, is one of only 10 poets from the K-3 division to earn the honor for his poem titled “Peace,” and is the only award winner from Georgia.
Jack wrote the poem last year as a second grader in Lisa Evans’ enrichment class.
Thousands of poems from throughout the United States were considered for the Top Ten award. Jack will receive a $50 US Savings Bond and the school will get a complimentary copy of the anthology in recognition of his award.

World War II Veterans Ready to Fly September 19
September 19th will be like Christmas morning for approximately 70 veterans of the “Greatest Generation” as they gather at the First United Methodist Church in Fayetteville for breakfast and to board buses for Hartsfield-Jackson Airport. They are also provided with lanyards and Honor Flight Fayette t-shirts to wear during the day, which is totally free of cost to them. This is just the first step in a day long journey dedicated as a “thank you” gesture to them for their valiant service during World War II.
As the buses get under way, they will be escorted by Patriot Guard members as well as law enforcement officers from Fayetteville, Fayette County and Peachtree City. The public is encouraged to line the streets by 6:30 a.m. that Saturday morning with flags and banners to give the veterans a spirited sendoff.
After a short flight to D.C., they will land at Ronald Reagan Airport where they are greeted by military personnel from different branches of the service who have requested the day off specifically to be with and assist guardians with the veterans. The veterans will then board motor coaches for their comfort during the day. Although the World War II Memorial is the main feature, they will ride by the memorials for Iwo Jima, the Korean War, Viet Nam and Arlington National Cemetery. Time permitting, stops will be made at these locations also.
The veterans’ visit to “their” memorial is always one of mixed emotions, and very often tears can be seen in their eyes as well as those of the guardians who are there to help them through the day. Sometimes they share stories as they walk around the memorial, and sometimes they just reflect in silence because memories are too poignant or too painful.
After they return from these trips to D.C., veterans have often said that it was the most wonderful day of their lives, second only to marriage or the birth of children. However, the guardians who accompany them, and pay their way to do so, will tell you it was one of the most special days of their lives also.
Honor Flight Fayette is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization which is staffed totally by dedicated volunteers whose only purpose is to honor and say “thank you” to the brave veterans of World War II. If you would like to learn more about Honor Flight Fayette, become a volunteer or make a donation, please check honorflightfayette.org or P. O. Box 1209, Fayetteville, GA, 30214.

Sharpsburg man wins $12M Mega Millions jackpot
A Sharpsburg man is celebrating a mega win. Wayne Reese, 54, matched all of the winning numbers in Tuesday's Mega Millions drawing and won a $12 million jackpot.
Reese discovered his win Wednesday evening while checking the Georgia Lottery's Web site.
"I said, 'Whew' like Ric Flair," he said with excitement. "I shouted out to my family, 'Y'all won't believe what's right here!' "
Winning numbers for the drawing were: 2-9-28-51-53 and the Mega Ball was 19. Reese stopped at Red & Ed's Convenience Store, located at 874 Corinth Road in Newnan, for a MoonPie and a Coca-Cola Zero when he purchased the lucky Quik Pik ticket.
Reese, who is a contractor and owns a septic tank business, wants to build homes for his two adult children. He and his wife, Linda, also intend to remodel their own home.
The Reese's were already winners of the lottery. His daughter, a school teacher, attended the University of West Georgia as a lottery-funded HOPE Scholarship recipient.
"We're on a new ride now," Reese exclaimed. "It sure feels good."
Any Georgia Lottery retailer who sells a winning Mega Millions jackpot ticket can earn the $25,000 retailer incentive bonus payment. If more than one winning jackpot ticket is sold in Georgia, the retailer selling the winning tickets will share the $25,000 retailer incentive bonus. Red & Ed’s Convenience Store will receive the $25,000 retailer incentive bonus.
As with all other Georgia Lottery games, proceeds from Mega Millions will benefit education in the state of Georgia.
Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corporation has returned more than $11 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs including Georgia's HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia's Pre-K Program. More than 1.1 million students have received HOPE, and more than 940,000 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.

Fayette County BOE Financial Report Receives Highest Honor
Financial reports are usually not on most people’s top 10 list of must read items but the one published by the Fayette County Board of Education could change that.
For the third consecutive year, the Government of Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada has awarded its Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting to the board of education for the school system’s comprehensive annual financial report (CAFR).
The award is given annually to reports that demonstrate a constructive spirit of full disclosure that clearly communicate the organization’s financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the CAFR. It is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management.

Fayette County School System PR Department Wins Top Award
The Public Relations Department of the Fayette County Public School System has received one of the highest national awards in recognition of outstanding public relations practices.
The National School Public Relations Association has awarded the department its 2009 Golden Achievement Award. Fayette’s public relations department was one of only 30 nationwide to receive the honor.
Judges carefully sought outstanding achievement in the four steps of a public relations program to determine the award winners. The steps include: 1) analysis of the need; 2) planning to meet the need; 3) execution and communication of the program; and 4) formal evaluation. A public relations program must meet all four in order to win.
“This is truly an honor. This award signifies that we have one of the top public relations programs in the nation. This is the highest honor awarded to date to the public relations department,” says Public Information Specialist Melinda Berry-Dreisbach.
The public relations department has received both national and state awards for its communication materials since the office opened in 2001. All totaled, the department has been awarded 56 national and state honors.

Fayetteville Honors the Birthday of Marquis de Lafayette with a Proclamation
Shown are Susan Sloan, Chairman of Commemorative Events for James Waldrop Chapter DAR and Fayetteville Mayor Ken Steele.
At a recent City of Fayetteville Council Meeting, the birthday of the Marquis de Lafayette was honored by the presentation of a proclamation to the James Waldrop Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution.
LaFayette, a champion of the American cause for freedom from the English Crown, volunteered his services against the order of his own King. He received no pay for his assistance to the colonists and was able to convince the King of France to join the colonists in fighting the overbearing English King.
The James Waldrop Chapter DAR, chartered in Fayetteville, was honored to be instrumental in Fayetteville proclaiming September as LaFayette Month.
