Praying, Pledging and Ringing Bells for Our Nation's Constitution

The buzz was audible at the old Fayette County Courthouse on the square Friday, September 17.

With muskets, bells, and flags, the James Waldrop Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution celebrated the 223rd anniversary of the signing of the United States Constitution.

The celebration opened with prayer and was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.  A musket salute was given by the Marquis de Lafayette Chapter Sons of the American Revolution.

Several local residents joined in the 3rd annual bell ringing celebration.

DAR and SAR Ring Bells to Celebrate America's Freedom

Musket shots were fired on the old Fayette County Courthouse grounds on July 4th as the James Waldrop Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution and the Marquis de Lafayette Chapter Sons of the American Revolution gathered to celebrate America's independence at the annual "Let Freedom Ring" ceremony.

Names of the signers of the Declaration of Independence were read aloud, and followed with a bell being rung for each of the 13 original colonies. 

Jared Cline, a member of the Button Gwinnett Chapter Children of the American Revolution, led the pledge of allegiance to the American Flag.

The Declaration of Independence is a statement adopted by Congress which listed the grievances against King George III and announced the 13 colonies were no longer a part of the English Empire.  The vote to declare independence from England was on July 2, 1776, but the statement was not adopted until July 4, 1776.  By this time, the American colonies had been at war with England for over a year.  While adopted on July 4th, it is generally believed the final signatures on the Declaration were not completed until August 2, 1776.

Sons, Daughters and Children of the American Revolution Showcased in Peachtree City July 3 Parade

 The streets of Peachtree City were lined with residents and guests on July 3rd as everyone waited for the annual tradition of kicking of Independence Day celebrations in "Peachtree City" style.

Members of the Marquis de Lafayette Sons of the American Revolution Chapter Color Guard started the parade off by the firing of their muskets which rallied the crowd for one of the biggest parades in the metro Atlanta area.

Joining the Sons of the American Revolution on their float were members of the Augustin Clayton, General Daniel Newnan, Fayette Starr’s Mill and Pulaski Daughters of the American Revolution Chapters, and members of the Button Gwinnett Chapter Children of the American Revolution.

The Marquis de Lafayette Chapter Sons of the American Revolution is chartered in Fayette County.

SAR Honors Grimes with Daughters of Liberty Medal

Liz Grimes of Clayton Co. was recently awarded the Daughters of Liberty Medal for her continued support and outstanding service to the Marquis de Lafayette Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution, Georgia Society.

Grimes is a member of the Augustin Clayton Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, where she serves as Registrar.

The Maquis de Lafayette Chapter SAR is chartered in Fayetteville.

Wise Joins Marquis de Lafayette Chapter SAR

Recently, Tom Wise of McDonough was sworn in as a member of the Marquis de Lafayette Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution.  Wise, a native of Thomasville and a graduate of Presbyterian College, Clinton, SC, has resided in McDonough for the past 25 years.  He is a retired Vice President of Bank of America with 32 years service in Branch Banking. He is a former chair of the Henry County Chamber of Commerce, and the Henry United Way and a former President of the Rotary Club of Henry County. He has served as an elder in McDonough Presbyterian Church and as chairman of the Endowment Committee. He is married to Dottie, and has three grown children, Henderson, Winn, and Betsy and seven grandchildren. Tom is a Master Gardener, and in addition to gardening, enjoys singing, playing the piano, reading, and genealogy.

While chartered in Faytteville, the Marquis de Lafayette Chapter SAR  serves Fayette County, Henry County, Clayton County, South Fulton County and Spalding County. Dunn Sworn in as New President of Marquis de Lafayette Chapter SAR

Lewie Dunn, a resident of Fairburn, was recently elected and sworn in as President of the Marquis de Lafayette Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. Dunn will be in command of the SAR Chapter that serves the entire Southern Crescent of Atlanta.

The SAR is involved in educational, historical and patriotic activities that include visitations to 4th and 8th grade classrooms and various civic and veterans groups. The SAR also works on programs that assist elderly and needy veterans and mark the graves of veterans who served in the Revolutionary War.

Booth History Teacher Named Georgia SAR Teacher of the Year

The Georgia Society Sons of the American Revolution has selected one of Fayette County's middle school teachers as their 2009-2010 Georgia Teacher of the Year.

Sue Mullin, a Georgia history teacher and team leader at J.C. Booth Middle, has been selected from a pool of exemplary middle and high school history teachers throughout the state, both public and private, as an example of whose instruction on the Revolutionary War demonstrates educational efforts in the classroom that exceed and excel above current and accepted curriculum requirements. She will receive her award at a special program on April 3 in Atlanta.

As the state winner, Mullin will represent Georgia at the national competition for the Tom & Betty Lawrence American History Teacher Award. The national winner will receive an all-expenses paid trip to the Freedoms Foundation Summer Teacher Graduate Workshop at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. The workshop provides a professional education opportunity to an educator who will bring back to the classroom a heightened level of creativity and enthusiasm about the American Revolutionary era.

Last year the Georgia Veterans of Foreign Wars named Mullin the Georgia Citizenship Education Teacher of the Year for middle schools. She is also Booth’s 2009-2010 Teacher of the Year.

Constitution Day Bell Ringing in Fayetteville Georgia

The James Waldrop Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution joined in the Bells Across America Celebration on September 17 as the country celebrated the 221st anniversary of the signing of the US Constitution. Over 2 dozen local citizens, DAR members and SAR members rang bells for two minutes in honor of the signing. A 6 foot long scroll with over 500 names of local citizens who have pledged support of the Constitution over the last month was on display. The Marquis de Lafayette Chapter Sons of the American Revolution provided a musket salute.

During this short but inspiring ceremony, the names of the original thirteen states are read and bells are rung to honor the men who risked their lives by signing the Declaration of Independence. This event was begun by the Marquis de Lafayette Chapter Sons of the American Revolution several years ago and has become a Fayetteville tradition. This year, the James Waldrop Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution of Fayetteville will partner with them and hand out American flags to attendees. The ceremony only lasts about twenty minutes, so plan that barbecue for 3:00 and bring the family to this meaningful event to honor our country's birthday and the men who brought it about.

Charles Hal Dayhuff, III, Recognized by National Society Sons of the American Revolution

FL Note: Kudos to Mr. Dayhuff for his outstanding work with the Boy Scouts! Mr. Dayhuff also has ties to Fayette County through his commitment to the local SAR chapter.

Stockbridge resident Charles Hal Dayhuff, III, was recently honored by the National Society Sons of the American Revolution. President General Bruce Wilcox of the NSSAR presented the Robert E Burt Boy Scout Volunteer Award, the society’s highest award for Volunteers in the Boy Scout movement, to Dayhuff, Past President of the Georgia Society and a Great Scouter.

Dayhuff, an Eagle Scout, is a dedicated leader of the scouting program. He has been involved with scouting for 63 years. His dedication is evident as he never gives up an opportunity to help in the scout training activities.

Dayhuff currently sits on the Tussahaw District Eagle Board of Review, and is a recipient of the coveted Silver Beaver from the Flint River Council and the La Orden de Espiritu de las Buenas Obres from the Canal Zone Council. He also serves as the Scouting Committee Chairman for the Marquis de Lafayette Chapter SAR in Fayetteville.

Dayhuff's recognition by the National SAR is only third time an award has been given to a member in scouting.
