Lunch and Learn in Fayette County for Surrogate Parent Training

A lunch and learn session for persons interested in becoming surrogate parents to students with disabilities in the educational process will be held November 9 in the media center of Rivers Elementary beginning at 12:30 p.m.

The Fayette County Public Schools Exceptional Children’s Department will provide training for those interested in becoming surrogates for students whose parents cannot be identified or located, and the responsibilities are strictly limited to the special education portion of the child’s education. Duties include attending and participating in the child’s annual Individualized Education Program (IEP) meeting and providing consent for evaluation or placement.

Foster parents, retired teachers and persons who would like to act as a parent in these special education decisions are encouraged to come to this training. Rosie Gwin, exceptional children’s services coordinator for the school system, will lead the training.

“Acting as a surrogate parent is a wonderful opportunity to serve a child when he or she needs it the most,” says Allison Stevenson, the school system’s parent mentor.

Participants are invited to bring their own lunch. Drinks and dessert will be served.

Not Smart(ies): Doctors Warn of Dangers in Kids 'Smoking' Sugary Candies

Adolescents and teens have been crushing and inhaling candy, and then exhaling it, in an effort to look as though they’re smoking cigarettes, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday.

Countless youths have even posted how-to videos, like this one on YouTube, of themselves engaging in this behavior.

Health experts fear the behavior may lead to harmful conditions. Lunch and Listen on the Courthouse Lawn

– Fayetteville Main Street and Leslie Contracting presents Lunch on the Lawn Friday, May 30 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the historic Courthouse. Past Fayette Idol winner Krysta Nick and The Gopher Broke Band and Friends will perform at this free event and Pies-On Pizza will be on hand selling box lunches.

“We’d love for everyone to come downtown on their lunch hour to relax and enjoy free, live music in a great outdoor atmosphere,” said Jennifer Cleland, Main Street Coordinator. “Changes are beginning to take place on the downtown square and we want people to share in the excitement and to support the businesses.”

Guests may bring their own lunch or purchase a box lunch from Pies-On Pizza. They will have boxed lunches that include chips and a drink with a choice of turkey and cheese sandwiches, slice of pizza or hotdog for only $5.00. During lunch, The Gopher Broke Band and Friends will play contemporary country favorites.

Mercedes Benz of South Atlanta will be showcasing the all new C-Class Sport model and a CLK convertible. Also, they will be giving away tickets to the 2008 Mercedes Benz of South Atlanta Summer Concert Series.
