Burch, Spring Hill and Inman Elementary Winners of Fifth Grade Math Tourney

The sum of all the prime factors of 42 is subtracted from the sum of all the odd factors of 42. What is the result?

If you don’t know the answer, chances are the fifth grade math team at Robert J. Burch Elementary does. They are the champions of the 11th Annual Fayette County Elementary Math Tournament, fifth grade division.

After calculating 15 timed word problems, Anna Bridgeman, Jordan Hinnant, Shon Hoberg, and Mia Williams (alternate) took their team to victory with the most correct answers.

Also placing in the competition was second place winner Spring Hill Elementary with team members Nicholas Koenig, Albert Lambert, Aliaahil Lilywala, and Kirsten Gillette (alternate), and third place winner Inman Elementary with the team of Seth Holloway, Keagen McCartha, Juwan Wesley, and Isabel Henares (alternate).

The top three teams each received a trophy to take back to their school to celebrate their achievement. In addition, as the county’s fifth grade champion, Robert J. Burch’s name will be added to the plaque of champions that is displayed in the math classroom at the LaFayette Educational Center.

All 17 elementary schools had teams of three plus one alternate at the tournament. Participants were determined through each school’s math competition with the four highest scoring students advancing to the county competition.

Fayette County Math Whizzes Show Talent at Competition

With pencils frantically figuring, fingers flying across calculators and brains firing with knowledge, students used all of their resources battling to become the winners of the 2010 Fayette County Elementary Math Bowl.

It took a total of 18 word problems to find the winning teams of the fourth grade bowl. Students fought hard to stay in the game, answering three tiebreaker questions beyond the regular 15 before winners were finally determined. There were no tiebreakers for fifth grade.

The 2010 winning teams for fourth grade are (first place) Inman, (second place) Cleveland and (third place) Kedron.

 

 (First Place) Inman: Alexis Harris, Keagen McCartha (alternate), Damien Robbins and Juwan Wesley with fourth grade teacher Sue Paggen.

(Second Place) Cleveland: Jason Hess, Adam Jamison, Jonathan Lewis and Achyuth Murthy (alternate) with fourth grade teacher Angela Spagnuolo (L) and Assistant Principal Angie Southers.
 

 

 

(Third Place) Kedron: Naseem Amini, Jolie Fouts (alternate), Bridgette Machemehl and Hayden Quale with Principal Mary Margaret Bivings (L) and fourth grade teacher Laura Griffies holding her daughter Susanna.







Fifth grade team winners include (first place) Kedron, (second place) Peeples and (third place) Oak Grove.

Students worked together in teams of three to solve the problems. Contestants qualified for the county tournament by winning their school-based math competitions.

“All of these students are already winners representing their schools and should be very proud of their accomplishments. We are very proud of them,” says Math Coordinator Lynn Ridgeway.

Each participant received a certificate of participation. Additionally, the first, second and third place winners were awarded a trophy to take back to their schools and each team member received a math book to help get a head start on the next grade level of math. Also, each first place team will have the name of their school engraved on the plaque of champions that is displayed in the math classroom at the LaFayette Educational Center.

This marked the 10th annual Fayette County Elementary Math Bowl featuring math teams from each of the school system’s 17 elementary schools.

Purple Hair for a Great Cause

Staff members at Inman Elementary are sporting some colorful new hairdos this spring.

Visitors walking into the front office might do a double take when they see school clerk Sharon Langston sporting purple hair extensions. She, along with paraprofessional Cheryl Schwertfeger and school counselor Leslie Fear, agreed to wear the extensions if the students could raise $300 to benefit cancer research for Relay for Life.

Anxious to see the staff members in purple hair, the students came through with flying colors collecting $460 for the school’s Relay for Life fundraiser.

“Reading is Contagious” Kicks Off at Inman Elementary

Fourth grader Kahlah Andrews, 10th grade mentor Ivori Douglas from Our Lady of Mercy High School and fourth grader Eden Negusse dive into books made of cake at the “Reading is Contagious” kickoff celebration.

Something contagious is going around at Inman Elementary, the love of reading.

Funded by a grant from Target and the Coweta-Fayette Bright Ideas Program, 20 teen mentors, who also happen to be chronic readers, from Whitewater and Our Lady of Mercy high schools are sharing their passion with Inman’s After School Program students through a new initiative called “Reading is Contagious.”

Students participating in the program do so at the request of their parents. Parents must agree to match the one-hour per week reading commitment with their child that mentors make. A journal recording time spent, child-created assessments of comprehension, word games, and drawings are exchanged between mentors and parents throughout the year. The journals mark milestones that are awarded, culminating with an end-of-the-year celebration.

“If we can get children excited about reading, we will have done our job; and if their reading scores improve, we won’t be surprised,” says Kahlilah Pagan, site coordinator for Inman’s After School Program.

The school recently held a “Reading is Contagious” kickoff celebration to inform parents and get students excited about the program. Louis Robinson, the school’s principal, calls the program a total team effort that is student focused.

“The students will be inspired by the attention given to them, the mentors and parents will be proud of their accomplishments, and together we will be reaching out to children with compassion through reading,” he says.

Fayette County Students Showcase Reading Skills at County Invitational

Fourth and fifth grade teams from all of Fayette County's elementary schools participated in the seventh annual Fayette County Reading Invitational, with each school walking away with awards in both grade levels.

The Reading Invitational is a voluntary event for avid readers in the fourth and fifth grades. Interested students read books from an approved list on their own time, independent from their classroom work. Schools conduct contests to select the students who will make up the teams to represent them at the county level. Awards are given at the gold, silver and bronze level.

Gold Level (4th Grade): Fayetteville Intermediate and Kedron Elementary. (5th Grade): Braelinn Elementary, Robert J. Burch Elementary, Peachtree City Elementary, Peeples Elementary and Spring Hill Elementary.

Silver Level (4th Grade): Braelinn Elementary, Brooks Elementary, Crabapple Lane Elementary, Huddleston Elementary, Inman Elementary, Sara Harp Minter Elementary, Oak Grove Elementary and Spring Hill Elementary. (5th Grade): Brooks Elementary, Crabapple Lane Elementary, Fayetteville Intermediate, Huddleston Elementary, Sara Harp Minter Elementary, Oak Grove Elementary and Tyrone Elementary.

Bronze Level (4th Grade): Robert J. Burch Elementary, Cleveland Elementary, North Fayette Elementary, Peachtree City Elementary, Peeples Elementary and Tyrone Elementary. (5th Grade): Cleveland Elementary, Inman Elementary, Kedron Elementary and North Fayette Elementary.
