Winter/Spring 2011 Parks and Rec Registration Deadline Jan 21st

The Fayette County Parks and Recreation Department registration for the Winter/Spring 2011 brochure will be taken at the Activities House, 980 Redwine Road, Monday – Friday from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The brochure can be obtained at the offices of the Fayette County Parks and Recreation Department, Administration Complex, Library, and school offices. To download brochures from the web site go to http://www.fayettecountyga.gov/parks_rec/brochure_parks.asp. Early registration is encouraged as these programs fill up fast and transportation is limited on the adult trips.

COURSE CODES NEW 2011! New this year is course codes that have been assigned to each program. Please use the code that corresponds with the title of the program when you register online, by phone, by mail, or when you walk-in. Tree climbing, table tennis, massages, and archery still required everyone to register by mail or walk-in.

BOYS AND GIRLS YOUTH TRACK PROGRAM

This program is designed to teach the sport of track and field, promote youth physical fitness, and provide fun learning experiences. This program is a recreation based program that is open to runners of all abilities.

Two Fayette County Residents Earn Master’s Degrees from Clayton State

Two individuals from Fayette County recently graduated from Clayton State University with master’s degrees.

Fayetteville’s Barbara James, a teacher at Rising Starr Middle School and the first recipient (in 2008) of the Clayton State University Retirees Association Scholarship, has earned a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies. An additional story on James will be forthcoming next week.

Peachtree City’s Nicholas Ross Cushnie earned a Master of Arts in Teaching Mathematics, one of the first two master’s degrees awarded from the University’s College of Information and Mathematical Sciences.

A total of 20 individuals will receive master’s degrees from Clayton State at the Dec. 10, Fall 2010 Hooding Ceremony. A unit of the University System of Georgia, Clayton State University is an outstanding comprehensive metropolitan university located 15 miles southeast of downtown Atlanta.

“Gift Your Library” Holiday Campaign

The Friends of the Peachtree City Library have announced their 2010 “Gift Your Library” holiday campaign. The Friends suggest that instead of giving someone another tie or candle, consider donating $25 in their name to the library. The donation will be used to purchase a book for the library, and the honoree will receive a gift card acknowledging the donation. It’s a great gift, and not just for family members and friends. Think about honoring co-workers, teachers, and employees, as well.

In addition to the gift card sent to the honoree, the Friends will insert a bookplate in the purchased books, acknowledging both the donor and the honoree.

Lani Clancy, President of the Friends, noted that with the austerity of the city budget, “…it’s even more important that we—as citizens, patrons, and friends of the library—help. This program has a special benefit. Several members of the Friends have pledged to underwrite the cost of gift cards, mailing, and bookplates, so all money donated goes directly to buy books.”

Donation forms are available at the library. An email version that can be printed on your home computer may be requested from ptc.library.friends@gmail.com. The Friends of the Library (Peachtree City Library Corporation) is a 501(c)3 corporation; your donation may be tax deductible.

Africa Inland Mission U.S. Headquarters to Move to Peachtree City Pending Sale of Current Headquarters

Africa Inland Mission (AIM) announced this week that Peachtree City, GA, will be the new location for their U.S. Headquarters pending the sale of the current headquarters in Pearl River, NY.

In an email announcement to mission members AIM’s U.S. Director, Dr. Ted Barnett, said AIM’s U.S. Council decided unanimously on the new locale, a decision that came after more than a year of seeking God’s direction and researching potential locations. Peachtree City was the area that best fit the criteria set by AIM’s U.S. Council when the decision to move the headquarters was announced in May of 2009.

Factors contributing to the decision were access to the Atlanta International Airport, housing prices within the range set by AIM’s U.S. Council, and the identification of an office facility well-suited to the mission’s needs.

The Pearl River School District has contracted to purchase AIM’s current headquarters for use as its administrative offices, and a community vote to approve the bond to fund the purchase is scheduled for November 23, 2010.

“Should that vote pass, there are no other known hurdles to closing on the Pearl River property, which would be anticipated before the Christmas holidays this year,” said Dr. Barnett. “If the Pearl River property closes, it is anticipated that the Peachtree City property will close on or before December 31, 2010.”

The planned move of the Pearl River office is anticipated to be in August 2011.

“We would ask that you pray for each person affected by this transition -- particularly our staff,” said Dr. Barnett. “The date that most impacts on our future right now is the school district vote on funding the bond on November 23, 2010. Pray that God will be glorified in the entire process.

“We look forward to more effectively contributing to the establishment of churches among all the unreached peoples of Africa from Peachtree City, GA.”

Gracie’s Closet, the clothing and supply resource center of Fayette Youth Protection Homes, Inc. (FYPH), needs volunteers to organize and distribute clothing and other items to children living in foster homes on the south side of metro Atlanta. Volunteer duties include sorting clothing donations and assisting foster children when they “shop” for items in the store. BOE Candidate Sam Tolbert to Speak to Fayette Republicans Oct 2nd

Fayette County Board of Education Post 5 candidate Sam Tolbert will be speaking at the Fayette County Republican Party First Saturday Breakfast at the Fayetteville IHOP at 9am on Saturday, October 2nd. 

Tolbert is a semi-retired senior manager who is currently an adjunct professor of mathematics at Gordon College in Barnesville. He decided to run for the school board position in part because of concerns about the school system’s financial shape. Tolbert says his background as a senior manager with “having to mind a budget and be fiscally responsible for expenditures and controls” would be an asset to the school board.  He plans to look at the financials and try to understand exactly what is required, what is coming in, and whether we are able to meet a reasonable budget that grows as the county grows.

Tolbert, who is a Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering Management with a minor in Business Finance, is skilled in project management, project engineering, quality assurance, organizational excellance, small business management, and communication.  He would also like to look at new programs that can be offered to help students, whether by allowing them to start college earlier or adding technical education earlier on “as opposed to just going and spinning their wheels in high school courses.” 

Tolbert will face Democratic candidate Dr. Laura Burgess in November’s general election.  All interested Republicans are invited to attend.

Bike & Hike at Line Creek Nature Area

Fun, family outdoor activities

Southern Conservation Trust is hosting “Bike & Hike”, an afternoon of free family outdoor fun, on Sunday, October 3rd at Line Creek Nature Area in Peachtree City, GA. Activities beginning at 2:00 PM include a bike ride, a guided nature hike, a nature treasure hunt with prizes and door prizes.

There will be two guided bike rides - a family/beginner ride and a longer route for intermediate riders. Riders will leave Line Creek Nature Area at approximately 2:30 PM. The shorter route will take approximately 45 minutes round-trip. More experienced riders will enjoy the cart paths south of the Nature Area along Flat Creek Nature Area on a 1 ½ hour ride.

Helmets are required. Prizes will be awarded for best helmet, most riders in one group and youngest/oldest riders.

Hikers won’t be left out. An experienced guide will help visitors explore one of the trails in the Line Creek Nature Area. Mike Swanson will highlight fascinating facts about Line Creek’s unique ecosystem and wildlife habitat.

Additional activities include a fun Nature Treasure Hunt for the kids with prizes. Bike & Hike sponsors include Synovus/Bank of Coweta, Bank of North Georgia and Brent Scarbrough & Company. Refreshments will be provided by Bruster’s Ice Cream and Rita’s Ice.

Southern Conservation Trust is a Fayette County-based conservation nonprofit that owns, manages and protects 1400 acres of farms, forests and environmentally sensitive land in the Southern Crescent. The Trust hosts environmental programs and enhances its three public preserves in Fayette County with trails, overlooks and re-introduction of native species. As a regional land trust the Trust works with willing landowners throughout the South Metro area to permanently protect open space that benefits the community and can offer tax benefits for the landowner.

“In today’s busy world it’s tough to find time to get outdoors, especially for children. Check out the new Fayette Sheriff website!

I ran into Sheriff Hannah tonight at the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce Expo. And no, I didn't run into him with my car or knock him down! I was at the Expo table for the Clothes Less Traveled Thrift Shop as he was making the rounds. We chatted for a few minutes about a number of Fayette issues, one of them being the new website the Sheriff's office has been working on.

When I got home, unpacked, and settled in, I popped over to see what it looked like. I spent more time than I intended wandering around the new site. I was impressed. It's not 100% complete yet, but the information links kept me clicking!

I checked my neighborhood to see if there were any sex offenders nearby. Nope.

Then I popped over to the link titled "Crime Mapping". I was able to put in my address and find out where crimes had occurred around my home. I got nosy and expanded the viewing area to see the kind of things going on outside my immediate area. I'll be clicking that link again!

I looked under the "Records Section" to see crime statistics and then clicked on a few others under the heading just to see what kind of information was offered. Good to know it's there in case I need it some day.

Of course I looked at Fayette County's Most Wanted Fugitives. Didn't recognize anyone...

There are some areas that are currently being worked on (Kids Page, Fiscal Information and others), but they're coming.

Oh, and I also signed up under the "Community Notifications" tab to get alerts from the Sheriff's office. I'm already getting them for Peachtree City and Tyrone so was happy to discover I could add the areas outside the cities. It's great info and I highly encourage everyone in Fayette County to sign up. They can text alerts and / or email them to you.

It looks like this is going to be the kind of site you'll want to stop by and "visit" more than once. They have links to quite a few state and local agencies, contact info in the event you want to call the Sheriff's Dept., employment opportunities, crime prevention tips... the list is long.

Be sure to click on "Office of the Sheriff" and then click "History of the Office of Sheriff". It's interesting reading.

I think the website is going to be a valuable resource for Fayette residents. Go take a peek.

Operation Pill Drop - Peachtree City and Fayetteville

Take-back event offers the public a safe and secure way to dispose of their medications.


Peachtree City:

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, Safe Kids of Georgia, and the Peachtree City Police Department are sponsoring an Operation Pill Drop location in Peachtree City on September 25th, 2010, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. The event will be held in the parking lot of K-Mart, located in the Braelinn Village Shopping Center at 400 Crosstown Drive, Peachtree City, GA.

This is a prescription drug take-back event where the public can dispose of expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs or over-the-counter medications to keep them out of the wrong hands. Operation Pill Drop offers the public a free, anonymous, and convenient option for disposing these medications to protect their families and the environment. Unintentional poisoning from prescription medications is on the rise. Every year, over 2 million poison exposures are reported in the U.S. In 2009, over 51% of reported poisonings in Georgia, involved children ages 5 and under.

Please note that Operation Pill Drop cannot accept needles/sharps, syringes with needles, thermometers, IV bags, bloody or infectious waste, personal care products, empty containers, inhalers, medical equipment or hydrogen peroxide.

Fayette County Sheriff's Office, Fayetteville: 

The Fayette County Sheriff Office has partnered with the Federal Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and other government, community, public health and law enforcement partners to announce a nationwide prescription drug “Take-Back” initiative that seeks to prevent increased pill abuse and theft.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office will be collecting potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs for destruction on Saturday, September 25th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, 155 Johnson Avenue, Fayetteville, Georgia. The service is free and anonymous; there are no questions asked or paperwork required. Participants in this initiative are simply asked to bring there unused or unwanted prescription drugs to this location where they can be destroyed.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office will have a “drive-though” type setup in the Sheriff’s Office Parking lot on Johnson Avenue nearest to South Jeff Davis Drive. Participants can drive through and not get out of their car.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Many Americans are not aware that medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are increasing at alarming rates, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, many Americans do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medicine, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away – both potential safety and health hazards. You can make your home safe and strengthen your community by participating in this nationwide prescription take-back program.

Local Photographers Part of Nationally Recognized Photo Exhibition

Fayetteville residents, Donna Black and Phillip Spears, will display their photographs in the annual “SlowExposures” exhibition taking place this month in Concord, Georgia.

“SlowExposures” is the nationally recognized, juried photo exhibition held yearly in Pike County, Georgia, located one hour south of the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

The eighth showcase of photography, that faithfully captures the rural South's distinct history and character through fine art photography, opens this Friday, September 17th, 2010, in the 1887 R. F. Strickland Building (listed on the National Register of Historic Places), a late nineteenth century mercantile store in the “Presidential Pathways” region of west/central Georgia.

The photo celebration, which lasts for two event-filled weekends, includes salons and portfolio reviews; a local children’s photography contest; satellite shows and a celebratory ball on Saturday, September 25th. SlowExposures 2010 concludes on Sunday, September 26th.

In addition to the primary collection of over seventy photos, a self-driving road tour features a map of the satellite shows and historic sites throughout picturesque Pike County.

SlowExposures is the annual fundraiser of Pike Historic Preservation and is dedicated to supporting the historical and cultural heritage of the rural South through contemporary photography. www.slowexposures.org for more info.

Transition to High School Workshop Jan 14th

Parents of students with disabilities who will be transitioning to high school in the fall are invited to attend an informational workshop on January 14 at Rivers Elementary beginning at 6 p.m.

The workshop will be conducted by the Fayette County Public School System’s Exceptional Children’s Services department heads from each of the county’s five high schools. Discussion will include student involvement in the IEP (Individualized Education Program) meeting that is required at the eighth grade annual review, transition plan for high school and beyond, and an overview of curriculum and graduation rules. There will be a question and answer session at the end for general questions.

This workshop is a great opportunity to learn what is expected in high school. Parents are encouraged to bring their eighth graders with them since it will be a learning opportunity for the student as well.

DivorceCare: Surviving the Holidays Seminar Scheduled

The Small Group Ministry at Heritage Christian Church will be offering “DivorceCare: Surviving the Holidays” which is a helpful, encouraging seminar for people facing the holidays after a separation or divorce. The seminar will be held on Sunday, December 6th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Childcare provided. There’s no charge for this event.

The “Surviving the Holidays” seminar features practical suggestions, guidance and reassurance through video interviews with counselors, experts in divorce-related care and people who have experienced the holidays after separation or divorce. Topics to be discussed include “Why the Holidays Are Tough,” “What Emotions to Expect,” “How to Plan and Prepare,” “How to Handle Uncomfortable Situations” and “Using the Holidays to Help You Heal.”

Parents Invited to Attend Intellectual Disability Eligibility Workshop November 10 in Fayette County

A parent workshop on Intellectual Disability eligibility will be presented by the Fayette County Public Schools Exceptional Children’s Services Department on November 5 in the media center of Rivers Elementary beginning at 6 p.m.

Discussion will focus on how mild, moderate, severe and profound intellectual disability eligibilities are determined, the terminology used and the services available for students in the general and adapted curriculum settings. A question and answer session for general questions will follow.

Cathy Skinner-Robertson, adapted curriculum consultant for the county’s Exceptional Children’s Services Department, will lead the discussion. There will be light refreshments and door prizes for participants.

The Fayette Holiday Bazaar and Bake Sale will mark the beginning of the 2009 Holiday Season for folks in south metro Atlanta. The holiday season just wouldn't be the same without a Holiday Bazaar where handcrafted items for Thanksgiving and Christmas can be found.

Local crafters will put their unique homemade crafts on display and sell their wares to Fayette visitors and local residents looking for that special gift or home-baked treats. The Fayette Holiday Bazaar is sponsored by the Fayette County Parks & Recreation Department.

Homemade items for sale at the bazaar will range from handmade jewelry to knitted clothing, wooden toys, quilts, gift baskets and holiday arrangements (cornucopias, wreaths, and centerpieces).....and don't forget the delicious home-baked treats for sale. All vendor booths were sold out all most a month before the event. The Kiwanis Recreation Center is located just southwest of downtown Fayetteville on Redwine Road, next to the baseball fields.

Pink Out Event at The Avenue® Peachtree City Supports Breast Cancer Awareness Month

The Avenue® Peachtree City is teaming up with local nonprofit Breast Cancer Survivors’ Network (BCSN) to host a month-long celebration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The celebration culminates with Pink Out on Saturday, October 24 from 1-3 p.m., featuring a “Faces of Hope” photography tribute to local breast cancer survivors.

Attendees of Pink Out at The Avenue will enjoy family fun, including live music from The Bear 92.5, a pumpkin patch with orange and pink varieties, fall cook-out complete with a pink s’mores roast and more. Shoppers will be offered vouchers for discounted mammograms at OPI imaging, and can receive the reduced exam rate throughout October by mentioning Pink Out. Soma Intimates will offer complimentary bra fittings, and shoppers can attend a Talbots demonstration of scarf accessorizing. The first 50 Pink Out attendees who donate $10 to BCSN will receive a pink lunch tote and two raffle tickets for prizes from more than a dozen retailers valued at $40-$225. Raffle tickets also are available for purchase.

The Avenue is selling pink ribbons during Breast Cancer Awareness month, with proceeds being donated to BCSN. The outdoor lifestyle center’s more than 40 local and national restaurants and retailers will be outfitted with oversized pink ribbons as well as photos of local survivors to generate awareness of breast cancer, which is diagnosed in one out of every eight women and one out of every 100 men each year.

To benefit BCSN throughout October, Boulignini Shoes & Accessories is selling “Fight Like a Girl,” “Real Men Support Pink” and “Survivor” T-shirts, and Atlanta Bread Company is donating 50 cents of every shortbread cookie sale. In addition, Gap, Gap Kids and babyGap are offering 25 percent off regularly priced merchandise, excluding men’s and women’s jeans, for shoppers who donate gently worn jackets or jeans in-store on Oct. 24 and 25 to benefit BCSN.

Apples and ArtFest Oct 17th

The weather is going to be perfect for attending Fayette County's first Apples & ArtFest event this Saturday, October 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fayette Senior Services Life Enrichment Center located at 4 Center Drive in Fayetteville (across from the Fayette County Justice Center). Nearly 40 exhibitors will be showcasing their arts, crafts, and specialties. The event is open to the public and there is no admission cost. Proceeds will benefit Fayette Senior Services, Meals On Wheels, and Grandparents Raising Grandchildren.

With all the invigoration of a crisp fall day and the charm of a county fair, the event promises to be all that you and your family love about hometown festivals. In addition to the variety of exhibitors, there will be musical entertainment and dance exhibitions featuring Eddie Huffman and the McIntosh High School Chiefettes. Special features include fun and games at the Kids Apple COREner, the Granny Smith Memory Tree where attendees can support Meals on Wheels and Grandparents Raising Grandchildren by purchasing an "apple" in honor of a loved one, and the Apple-A-Day Healthy Living "Orchard".

A variety of food will be available for purchase, including culinary specialties by local Pastry Chef Lori Bean, along with a variety of pastry artisans. Tyrone Police Dept: Warning on Police Impersonators

A warning from The Fayette County Sheriff's Office about a case involving police impersonators.

The Fayette County Sheriff's Office has issued an advisory about a case they are working involving two females who went to the home of an elderly woman, displayed a badge and handcuffs, and were successful in taking money under the guise of an investigation.

According to the alert, "On Wednesday, October 7, 2009 at approximately 4:00pm a 73 year old female was approached at her residence in north Fayette County on Highway 92 by two females posing as undercover law enforcement officers. The duo stated they were investigating counterfeit money and showed the elderly female a badge and handcuffs. The elderly female was told if she did not cooperate, she would be arrested.

During the incident the females obtained cash from the residence and then forced the elderly female to go with them to her bank in Riverdale, Georgia to withdraw additional money.

After the withdrawal, the elderly female was set out at the Church’s Chicken in Riverdale, Georgia."

The suspects are described as a black female and a white female in a dark blue 4 door car, possibly a Camry or Malibu.

Please pass this information along to your family and friends and discuss it with your elderly family members. It is not uncommon for criminals to target this demographic because they are seen as easy targets and are often very trusting - especially of authority figures. Fayetteville Main Street Hosts 1st Annual Chili Cook-off

The autumn season is fast approaching, and Fayetteville Main Street is welcoming in the season with a variety of events and opportunities for local residents, many of which happen on Saturday, October 24. The newest endeavor is Main Street’s first annual Chili Cook-off.

Novices and experienced, kitchen pros are invited to take part in a fun competition to see who has Fayetteville’s best bowl of chili. Main Street Director, Brian Wismer, elaborates, “We have heard comments from the community to do this, so we were excited to find a spot on our event calendar where we could make this happen.” Prizes will be awarded for first place and first runner-up, but the focus is on bringing the community together for an afternoon of fun activities.

Also that same day at the Gazebo, residents can shop at an extended Market Day from 10am-6pm. This will be the final Market Day of 2009, as most of the produce vendors have reached the end of the growing season. “Don’t worry”, says Wismer. “They’ll be back again next year just as soon as the crops are ready!” Many people this year have enjoyed coming to Market Day at the Gazebo in Downtown Fayetteville where vendors have sold their homemade and homegrown products.

If that wasn’t enough, history buffs and thrill-seekers can take part in guided cemetery tours that Saturday night from 6.30-8.30pm. Sponsored by the Holliday-Dorsey-Fife Museum, tourists will be guided to notable gravesites where they will hear from the “ghosts” of Fayetteville’s past describe their lives in the 19th and early 20th century. That same weekend also hosts a long-standing tradition for kids of all ages. The Pumpkin Festival and Trick or Treat on Main Street, will be a fun spectacle around the square. Families are encouraged to come downtown and enjoy the kid’s rides and activities that will be interspersed between the Market Day and Chili Cook-off, and kids will be able to visit the downtown businesses for trick-or-treating and compete in a costume contest.
