Two Fayette County Grads Earn Prestigious Scholarship

The high academic achievements of two recent Fayette County high school graduates have garnered them a federally funded scholarship that has been awarded to approximately 27,000 students nationwide.

Taylor Lee of Whitewater High School and Ryan O’Shaughnessey of Starr’s Mill High School are recipients of the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship. Each student will receive a $1,500 award for four years to help cover tuition costs at the college or university of their choice.

The program, which is federally funded and state-administered, is designed to recognize exceptionally able high school seniors who show promise of continued excellence in postsecondary education. High school graduates who have been accepted for enrollment at institutions of higher learning, have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and show promise of continued academic excellence are eligible to apply for the scholarship in states in which they are residents. The U.S. Department of Education provides grant funds to states on a formula basis. The award is not based on the applicant’s financial need.

Fayette County Students Receive $2,500 Merit Scholarships

Graduating seniors at Fayette County High and McIntosh High are among the 2,500 students nationwide receiving National Merit Scholarships.

Jennie K. Lee (Fayette) and William S. Kearney (McIntosh) will both receive a $2,500 Merit Scholarship to help offset college expenses. Jennie plans to major in medicine/public health; William is planning a career in academic anthropology. Both Jennie and William are valedictorians at their respective schools.

National Merit Scholarship winners in each state are judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills and potential for success in rigorous college studies. A committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors selected the winners.

Applicants were evaluated on their academic record, including difficulty of subjects studied and grades earned; scores from two standardized tests; contributions and leadership in school and community activities; an essay describing interests and goals and the recommendation written by a high school official.

Fayette County Presidential Scholar Semifinalists Named

Three graduating seniors from Fayette County's high schools have been named semifinalists for the 2009 Presidential Scholars Program.

Jennie K. Lee, Fayette County High, and Minna Choi and William S. Kearney, both of McIntosh High, are among 17 students from Georgia and 562 nationwide to be selected as semifinalists. They are the only semifinalists in the south metro area. Students chosen as scholars for the program will be announced in May.

The Presidential Scholars Program is a recognition program where application is by invitation only based on a student’s SAT or ACT scores. Students must also be graduating seniors and United States citizens to be eligible for candidacy.

Those chosen as Presidential Scholars receive an expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. in June and the Presidential Scholars medallion at a ceremony sponsored by the White House. Scholars have access to important national and international figures, including government officials, educators, authors, musicians, scientists and other accomplished people. They are also provided opportunities to wrestle with issues that concern America and the world, participate in volunteer activities to benefit those in need, attend recitals, receptions and monuments.

Over 3,000 students nationwide were selected as candidates for the program and invited to submit applications to be considered for semifinalist, and then, scholar status.
