Fayette Chamber Announces Winner of $10,000

Congratulations to Jaye McMillan of Delta Community Credit Union for winning the Chamber’s Annual $10,000 Drawing. The drawing was held at the Business on the Green Golf & Tennis Tournament played at Braelinn Golf Club in Peachtree City.

Walmart Gives $2,000 to Peachtree City ASP

A total of $2,000 in Walmart Community Grant checks has been given to seven Peachtree City After School Programs (ASP).

The Walmart in Peachtree City presented the grants to programs at Braelinn, Crabapple Lane, Huddleston, Kedron, Oak Grove, Peachtree City, and Peeples elementary schools. Each program has its own plans for the money. Some sites will purchase art supplies, crafts, and playground equipment, while others will fund science and math programming. One site will use their funds to pay tuition for three children to attend ASP so that their single mom can keep her newfound job.

“We are extremely grateful for the generosity the Peachtree City Walmart has extended to our programs. This money will be used to enhance student activity areas and to create an enjoyable environment for our students,” says Julia Simpson, director of ASP.

ASP provides services to school age children within the school buildings where they attend day school; the program operates from the end of the school day until 6:30 p.m. Funding is through parent fees, grants and donations. All donations are tax-deductible. For more information about ASP, call 770-460-3990, ext. 255.

The Walmart Foundation strives to provide opportunities that improve the lives of individuals in communities including customers and associates through financial contributions, in-kind donations and volunteerism. The corporation’s philosophy of operating globally and giving back locally involves store associates in determining how Walmart Foundation dollars are used to support causes that are important to them.

Young Fayette County Authors Win at Competition

Three possible up and coming Fayette County authors have been recognized through the Young Georgia Authors Writing Competition.

Tyler S. Patrick, first grade, Hood Avenue Primary; Ian Fertig, second grade, Braelinn Elementary; and Laura Wu, fifth grade, Kedron Elementary all had winning entries at the Griffin RESA district level, which includes Butts, Henry, Lamar, Newton, Pike, Spalding and Thomaston-Upson counties.

The contest, sponsored by the Georgia Department of Education, is open to students in kindergarten through 12th grade. One winner is selected from each grade level. Any type of writing can be entered. Entries may be short stories, poetry, essays, journals, personal narratives, reports or any other original student writing. District winners advance to compete at the state level.

The purposes of the Young Georgia Authors Writing Competition are to encourage students to develop writing that represents their best efforts, provide a context for schools to support and celebrate the writing successes of all students, and encourage and recognize student achievement in writing throughout Georgia.

Fayette County Students Showcase Reading Skills at County Invitational

Fourth and fifth grade teams from all of Fayette County's elementary schools participated in the seventh annual Fayette County Reading Invitational, with each school walking away with awards in both grade levels.

The Reading Invitational is a voluntary event for avid readers in the fourth and fifth grades. Interested students read books from an approved list on their own time, independent from their classroom work. Schools conduct contests to select the students who will make up the teams to represent them at the county level. Awards are given at the gold, silver and bronze level.

Gold Level (4th Grade): Fayetteville Intermediate and Kedron Elementary. (5th Grade): Braelinn Elementary, Robert J. Burch Elementary, Peachtree City Elementary, Peeples Elementary and Spring Hill Elementary.

Silver Level (4th Grade): Braelinn Elementary, Brooks Elementary, Crabapple Lane Elementary, Huddleston Elementary, Inman Elementary, Sara Harp Minter Elementary, Oak Grove Elementary and Spring Hill Elementary. (5th Grade): Brooks Elementary, Crabapple Lane Elementary, Fayetteville Intermediate, Huddleston Elementary, Sara Harp Minter Elementary, Oak Grove Elementary and Tyrone Elementary.

Bronze Level (4th Grade): Robert J. Burch Elementary, Cleveland Elementary, North Fayette Elementary, Peachtree City Elementary, Peeples Elementary and Tyrone Elementary. (5th Grade): Cleveland Elementary, Inman Elementary, Kedron Elementary and North Fayette Elementary.

Kindness Kids of Braelinn Elementary School Collect Eggs for Adaptive Egg Hunt

Braelinn Elementary’s Kindness Kids Club collected over 1100 plastic eggs during Exceptional Children’s Week. The eggs will be used in the Adaptive Egg Hunt, a communitywide inclusive egg hunt for children with and without disabilities, to be held at 10 AM on Saturday, March 28 at the Fayette Family YMCA soccer field. The lead sponsor for this event is the Fayette County Navigator Team.

The Kindness Kids Club is a club for 3rd and 4th graders. The club encourages students to help others in their community and to perform "Random Acts of Kindness" for others when possible.

Braelinn Elementary School is a 2008 Gold Award School for Statewide Accountability System from the Department of Education, and is located in Peachtree City, Georgia.

Braelinn 14U Intermediate Tennis Team Smashing Fall Season

The Braelinn - Holleman team recently won the 14 and under intermediate division of the USTA Southern Crescent Junior Team Tennis program. The team, based at Peachtree City's Braelinn Golf Club, competed against opponents from the Newnan Country Club, Woodcreek and Highgrove subdivisions during the Fall 2008 season. Braelinn Elementary School Earns Award from "PTO Today"

It was all smiles recently at Braelinn Elementary School in Peachtree City when the announcement came from PTO Today Magazine. The Editor's Choice Award for Outstanding Major Project was presented to the Braelinn Elementary School PTO for the completion of a major renovation of the outdated gym floor.

Much of the capital for the project was provided through a string of ingenious fundraising activities spearheaded by the PTO. These activities included sales at a movie night, and an envelope drive, and matching contributions by a Braelinn family. Congratulations to PTO President Rebecca Bankey, Principal Wenonah Bell, and Coach Jill Collins for their dedication to this project.

Fayette County Schools Earn Achievement Awards

Fayette’s elementary, middle and high schools have collectively received 30 awards from the Georgia Department of Education in recognition of their academic achievement.

The inaugural Superintendent’s Distinguished Achievement Awards honor schools that had the highest achievement and greatest improvement on state curriculum tests: the Criterion-Referenced Competency Test (CRCT), the Georgia High School Graduation Test (GHSGT) and the End-of-Course Test (EOCT).

All of Fayette’s awards were given in the “achievement” category. The top 10 schools in the state with the highest percentage of students scoring in the “exceeds” category in each honored subject area and grade level received achievement awards. The honored subjects and grade levels include Grades 1-8 Reading CRCT; Grades 2 and 6 English Language Arts CRCT; Grade 9 Literature EOCT; American Literature EOCT; English Language Arts and Reading GHSGT; Grades 1-8 Mathematics CRCT; Algebra I EOCT; Geometry EOCT; Mathematics GHSGT; Grades 4 and 8 Social Studies CRCT; U.S. History EOCT; Economics EOCT; Social Studies GHSGT; Grades 5-8 Science CRCT; Physical Science EOCT and Biology EOCT.

A total of six elementary and middle schools received achievement awards for performance on the CRCT:
Braelinn Elementary – Grade 2 Reading and Grade 2 Mathematics
Huddleston Elementary – Grade 2 English Language Arts and Grade 2 Mathematics
Kedron Elementary – Grade 2 Mathematics, Grade 3 Mathematics, Grade 4 Reading, Grade 4 Mathematics, Grade 4 Social Studies, Grade 5 Mathematics and Grade 5 Science
Peeples Elementary – Grade 4 Mathematics
Bennett’s Mill Middle – Grade 6 Science and Grade 7 Science

Both McIntosh and Starr’s Mill high schools received achievement awards for performance on the EOCT:

Local Junior Team Tennis Players Represent Fayette County at State Championships

SSG Note: Super kudos to the teams who represented the Southern Crescent Junior Team Tennis League. Teams from Braelinn Golf Club, The Summit, Peachtree City Tennis Center and Woodcreek were among those invited to play. What super kids we have! You all performed spectacularly. We are proud of your game skills and of your excellent sportsmanship!

Congratulations to all 998 junior team tennis players who competed this past weekend at the Georgia State Championships. With over 100 teams vying for the title of top racquet, competition was stiff. All of the players who participated in the invitation only tournament are to be congratulated. They are all winners.

The Southern Crescent Junior Team Tennis League recently announced the 18U Intermediate Division Champs for Spring 2008 are the Braelinn Tennisholics. "I've watched most of these players since the first time they picked up a racquet. We have a young team and they just keep on taking whatever challenge is put before them. It was a tough season against mostly older kids, but we did it!, said team captain Ann Eldredge. "And by only four games in the end. It was a smashing season."

Braelinn U18 Intermediate Tennis Team Kept Courts Hot In Winter Season

The Braelinn 18U Intermediate Tennis Team was recently named champions of the Southern Crescent Junior Team Tennis First Winter Singles League. Team captain Ann Eldredge remarked, "These kids are so awesome. It was a tough season with the weather and the stiff competition, but our dedicated players kept their focus on the game. Braelinn Artists Winners in Kiwanis Art Competition

Two Braelinn artists won recognitions in the recent Kiwanis Art Competition. McKenzie Lehman, 4th grade, won a first place finish. Delaney Frank, fifth grade, won a fourth place ribbon. According to Mrs. Pegues, Braelinn Elementary art teacher, students “compete with artists of their grade level within Fayette County.” Congratulations, girls!
