Whitewater’s TSA Team Ranked Top 10 in State

Technology students at Whitewater High were fierce competitors at the annual Georgia TSA (Technology Student Association) State Conference, earning their team an overall seventh place state ranking.

The ranking was based on the number of wins and placement levels of individual team members. The following students earned top three placements in their competition areas: Katie Cassidy, first place, prepared presentation; Breanna Summers and Jevan Hutson, first place, debating technological issues; Katie Cassidy, second place, outstanding student; Jevan Hutson, second place, extemporaneous presentation; Francisco Obregon, second place, flight endurance; Guppy Stott, second place, technology bowl (written competition); and Jason Menko, third place, technical sketching and application.

As the second place winner in the outstanding student competition, Katie Cassidy was awarded a $500 scholarship.

The team also had outstanding performances in other areas of competition, placing fifth through 10th in biotechnology design, chapter team, construction renovation, digital video production, engineering design, fashion design, and technology bowl.

Student performance at the state level determined those advancing to the national conference in Dallas, Texas this June. Whitewater’s national competitors are Breanna Summers, Jevan Hutson, Katie Cassidy, Francisco Obregon, Jason Menko, Tyler Etchart, Will Dent, Ashley Larrow, Callie Sheffer, Avery Dingler, and Guppy Stott.

Georgia TSA’s annual state conference provides students opportunities beyond the traditional classroom and laboratory setting, allowing them to add to their increased knowledge and understanding of an ever-changing technical world.

Students Juggle Technology at Bennett’s Mill Middle School

How is juggling connected to technology? Well, there is no connection, but juggling teaches eye/hand coordination and self-confidence, traits that might prove useful in building something like a bridge.

Seventh grader Chris Cassidy teaches a five-minute juggling course to fellow students during their technology period at Bennett’s Mill Middle. About six to eight students participate in the juggling lessons each week, says technology teacher Jim Uttley.

A recent accomplishment by fellow student Andrew Hogan prompted a celebration from the jugglers. Andrew built a bridge out of K’Nex building materials that spanned 10 feet with a 6-foot clearance. It was part of his construction project in Uttley’s technology class. It took three days to complete.
Technology students at Bennett’s Mill learn about a number of possible career tracks including music production, car design, computer aided design and manufacturing, video game design, graphics and animation, web page design, aerodynamics, flight simulation, construction, robotics, and video production.

Whitewater Technology Students Win Awards

Officers of the Technology Student Association (TSA) at Whitewater High School take first place at the Georgia TSA Chapter Officer Retreat for Excellence (CORE).

TSA is the oldest student organization dedicated exclusively to students enrolled in technology classes in grades K-12. The CORE program is designed to provide local chapter officers with an opportunity to develop interpersonal and leadership skills, gain necessary knowledge and abilities to carry out the duties of their individual offices, and prepare a Chapter Program of Work that outlines activities for the coming year.

After attending a day of workshops, chapter officers turn in their Program of Work to state officers for review. Whitewater’s officers were awarded first place. The officers are Rhandi Finch, Jon Lester, Jason Menko, Zuri Coleman, Guppy Stott and Katie Cassidy.

In addition to the Program of Work win, Jason Menko and Carolyn Smith both earned the Statesmen Award that is given to students who receive at least an 85 on a test about TSA’s general information, history, officer duties, awards and other TSA facts.

Whitewater’s team also delivered a presentation to other chapters attending CORE. The team received excellent remarks and comments from the attendees.
