Students Showcase Literacy Skills at Regional Festival

Elementary and middle school poetry recitation and ready writing competitors collectively earned seven awards in the 2011 Regional Literacy Days Festival.

The annual festival was held February 2-3 in Griffin, Ga. hosted by Griffin RESA (Regional Educational Service Agency). Students from school systems in Butts, Fayette, Henry, Lamar, Newton, Pike, Spalding and Upson counties competed in three areas: Poetry Recitation, Ready Writing and Drama.

Fayette’s poetry recitation competitors came just one grade level short of receiving a placement in each grade. (Third Grade) Olivia Wernecke, second place, Braelinn Elementary; (Fourth Grade) Barrett Hester, first place, Braelinn Elementary; (Sixth Grade) Aubrey Bennett, second place, Rising Starr Middle; (Seventh Grade) Simone Jones, third place, Fayette Middle; and (Eighth Grade) Ellie Klarl, first place, Flat Rock Middle.

Students Headed to Literacy Days Festival

From Poetry recitation, writing, and dramatic performance, Fayette’s middle school students will show off their talents during Griffin RESA’s Literacy Days Festival on February 3.

A total of 16 students took first place in their grade levels at the Fayette County Recitation Festival last week, earning a spot in the district competition that will showcase students from school systems in Butts, Fayette, Henry, Lamar, Newton, Pike, Spalding, and Upson counties.

Contestants in the poetry recitation are Aubrey Bennett, sixth grade, Rising Starr Middle; Simone Jones, seventh grade, Fayette Middle; and Ellie Klarl, eighth grade, Flat Rock Middle.

Ready Writers representing Fayette are all from Rising Starr Middle. The students are Ethan Roland, sixth grade; Elizabeth Jowers, seventh grade; and Emma Wernecke, eighth grade.

The drama team from Fayette Middle will compete in the drama portion of the event. Students on the team are Dominque Boudreaux, Montavia Caudle, Haley Kakis, Saleena Davani, Sumvia Evans, Anna Franklin, Kezia Houston, TaNia Nash, Ashley Orta, and Cecilla Robinson. They will present “A True Princess,” an original piece written by the team.

100 Percent of Fayette County Science Projects Place at Regional Fair

All of Fayette County's middle and high school science students who advanced to the Griffin RESA Regional Science and Engineering Fair earned placements and two of their projects were selected to compete in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.

A total of 17 out of 23 projects that were selected for the regional fair brought home first place honors. The first place winners are eligible to attend the State Science and Engineering Fair March 31-April 2 at the University of Georgia.

Middle school first place winners include: (Bennett’s Mill) Matthew Harmon; Michael Koenig and Matthew Melatti; Mamie Smith; Monica Schwingshakl; (Fayette) Menaka Reddy; (Flat Rock) Helen Davidson; (J.C. Booth) Alex Marty; (Rising Starr) Shannon Lea McKillip.
High school first place winners include: (Fayette County) Rebecca Otwell; Omar Martinez and Landry Grymes; Sonika Reddy; Sarika Reddy; Tuure Pasto, Michael Martin and Sonya Jooma; (McIntosh) Karen Anderson and Nathan Pearson; Jackie Roshelli and Cara O’Brien; (Starr’s Mill) Leslie Perez and Torie Legere; Hannah Feltner and Regan Chewning.

Other placements include (Bennett’s Mill Middle) Tori Toth and Dale Chapman, second place; Jamie DeCicco, Jordan Watson and Katy Lewis, third place; (Fayette Middle) Juan Luis Munoz, third place; (Rising Starr Middle) Stephanie Clark, second place; Connor Chewning, third place; (Whitewater High) George Harris, third place.

The science fair judges selected four first place winners from Fayette County High to advance to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. Sonika Reddy advances as an individual along with the team of Tuure Pasto, Michael Martin and Sonya Jooma.

Special awards from various organizations and institutions were also given to the following teams and individuals: Leslie Perez and Torie Legere, Starr’s Mill High, Mu Alpha Theta; Rebecca Otwell, Fayette County High, National Society of Professional Engineers; Jackie Roshelli and Cara O’Brien, McIntosh High, Stockholm Junior Water Prize; Tuure Pasto, Michael Martin and Sonya Jooma, Fayette County High, U.S. Air Force; Menaka Reddy, Fayette Middle, U.S. Navy/U.S Marine Corps; Helen Davidson, Flat Rock Middle, U.S. Navy/U.S Marine Corps; Sonika Reddy, Fayette County High, Director’s Award; Tuure Pasto, Michael Martin and Sonya Jooma, Fayette County High, Directors Award.

The Griffin RESA Regional Science and Engineering Fair is a regional competition among middle and high schools in the Griffin RESA region that consists of Butts, Fayette, Henry, Lamar, Newton, Pike, Spalding and Upson counties.

Young Fayette County Authors Win at Competition

Three possible up and coming Fayette County authors have been recognized through the Young Georgia Authors Writing Competition.

Tyler S. Patrick, first grade, Hood Avenue Primary; Ian Fertig, second grade, Braelinn Elementary; and Laura Wu, fifth grade, Kedron Elementary all had winning entries at the Griffin RESA district level, which includes Butts, Henry, Lamar, Newton, Pike, Spalding and Thomaston-Upson counties.

The contest, sponsored by the Georgia Department of Education, is open to students in kindergarten through 12th grade. One winner is selected from each grade level. Any type of writing can be entered. Entries may be short stories, poetry, essays, journals, personal narratives, reports or any other original student writing. District winners advance to compete at the state level.

The purposes of the Young Georgia Authors Writing Competition are to encourage students to develop writing that represents their best efforts, provide a context for schools to support and celebrate the writing successes of all students, and encourage and recognize student achievement in writing throughout Georgia.

100 Percent of Fayette County Science Projects Place at Regional Fair

All of Fayette County’s middle and high school science students who advanced to the Griffin RESA Regional Science and Engineering Fair earned placements and two of their projects were selected to compete in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.

A total of 22 out of 25 projects that were selected for the regional fair brought home first place honors. The first place winners are eligible to attend the State Science and Engineering Fair April 1-4 at the University of Georgia.

Middle school first place winners include: Rebecca Otwell, Fayette; Karson Bobbitt, Flat Rock; Stephanie Clark, Rising Starr; Rebekah Livingston, Rising Starr; Ryan Hogan, Bennett’s Mill; Catherine Delage, Monica Schwingshaki, Elena Jordanov, Bennette’s Mill; Leslie Perez, Sydney Roberts, Bennett’s Mill; Adah Griessbach, J.C. The science fair judges selected three high school first place winners from Fayette County to advance to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. Sonya Jooma and Sonika Reddy of Fayette County were the only team winners selected for the international competition. Ryan Kitchens of Starr’s Mill was one of two individual students advancing to the international level.

Fayette County Students Win Awards at Regional Literacy Competition

After months of rehearsing and winning school and county-level competitions, students from Bennett’s Mill Middle, Fayette Middle, Oak Grove Elementary and Rising Starr Middle brought home awards from the 2009 Griffin RESA Regional Literacy Days Festival.

A total of five students placed in the poetry recitation portion of the festival. They are Ethan Scheper, Oak Grove Elementary, third grade, first place; Abby Scheper, Oak Grove Elementary, fifth grade, third place; TaNia Nash, Fayette Middle, sixth grade, first place; Diana Ricketts, Rising Starr Middle, seventh grade, third place; and Lexus White, Bennett’s Mill Middle, eighth grade, third place.

In addition to the poetry recitation winners, Livi Cote’, a seventh grader at Rising Starr Middle, took second place in the ready writing portion of the competition.

The Griffin RESA Regional Literacy Days Festival is a regional competition among elementary and middle schools in the Griffin RESA region which consists of Butts, Fayette, Henry, Lamar, Newton, Pike, Spalding and Upson counties.

Real Estate Course in Griffin Begins on Monday, July 28

The Coldwell Banker Bullard Advantage School of Real Estate in cooperation with Griffin Technical College will conduct the 75-hour real estate salesperson’s course in Griffin beginning Monday, July 28.

The eight-week course is required by the Georgia Real Estate Commission for a person to take the state real estate salesperson's licensing exam. Held in conjunction with Griffin Technical College, it will take place at the college at 501 Varsity Rd. in Griffin.

Classes will be held on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings from 6 until 9:15 p.m. The instructor will be Joe T. Lane.

The cost of the course is $450.00 plus books, and payment must be made in full upon registration. Those interested in taking the course should call Stephanie Fenton, director of career development for Coldwell Banker Bullard, at 770-477-6400, Ext. 229, for information about registration and materials.

Health Promotion Volunteer Training Program August 23

FL Note: Take a quick stroll down to Griffin and learn about another way to volunteer to help our community. This looks like it could be fun and rewarding.

The Spalding Regional & Henry Medical Centers in collaboration with District 4 Public Health are sponsoring a Health Promotion Volunteer Training Program all day August 23, 2008 at Spalding Regional Medical Center in Griffin.

This workshop will prepare and equip individuals to help others at risk of high blood pressure and diabetes and to be a resource for your church and/or community organization.

This training is a serious endeavor that takes time and commitment. While it takes a dedicated person to be trained to screen individuals and keep a record of this data, it is also a very rewarding task when you realize you are making a positive impact on those around you.

Class size is limited. Registration closes August 1, 2008.
