Peachtree City Patriot Day & Freedom Walk Scheduled for September 11

Peachtree City will remember the lives of nearly 3,000 people killed on September 11, 2001, a day that is emblazoned in the minds of Americans and peace loving people around the world.

The Patriot Day event will be held at Atlanta Regional Airport, Falcon Field on Saturday, September 11th starting at 9:30 a.m. with the “America Supports You Freedom Walk,” followed at 10 a.m. with a formal program. The public is invited to participate in the walk, which is less than one mile and all on airport grounds. In fair weather the formal program will be held at the Veterans Memorial at Falcon Field. It will be held at the Commemorative Air Force hangar there in the event of inclement weather.

Nine years has not dimmed the horrific memories that the world witnessed on that day, when Islamic extremists used commercial aircraft as weapons of mass destruction in New York, Washington D.C. and Pennsylvania, killing and injuring thousands.

In order to ensure Remembrance of the lives tragically lost, Patriot Day was declared by Presidential proclamation to be a national day to remember those who died or were injured and their families.

U.S. House of Representatives Joint Resolution 71 was approved by a vote of 407-0 on October 25, 2001. It requested that the President designate September 11 of each year as "Patriot Day." President George W. Bush signed the resolution into law on December 18, 2001 (as Public Law 107-89). Initially, the day was called the Prayer and Remembrance for the Victims of the Terrorist Attacks on September 11, 2001. It was actually on September 4, 2002, that President Bush used his authority created by the resolution and proclaimed September 11, 2002 as Patriot Day.

The Freedom Walk started as a commemorative effort by employees in the Pentagon to honor those who were killed there. From there it spread and has become a national tradition that calls on people to reflect on the lives lost on September 11, 2001, remember those who responded, honor our first responders and veterans past and present, and renew our commitment to freedom and the values of our country. Hundreds of walks are now staged across the country. This will be the 4th annual walk in Peachtree City.

Peachtree City’s event will feature honors to the flag including the National Anthem and Pledge of Allegiance. A commemorative wreath will also be presented. The guest speaker will be Mr. Bob McCubbins, president of the General Raymond Davis chapter of the Korean War Veterans Association.

WWII Heritage Days in Peachtree City April 24-25

“Remember Pearl Harbor!”, Rosie the Riveter, and Glenn Miller. Experience the sights and sounds of the Greatest Generation when the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Dixie Wing hosts the seventh annual “WWII Heritage Days” April 24-25, 2010. The public history event will be held at The Historical Airpower Facility, Falcon Field, Peachtree City from 9am-4pm both days.

The weekend will again feature vintage aircraft, period vehicles, education displays, guest speakers and demonstrations, including mock battles between reenactors portraying American and Axis troops.

“WWII Heritage Days is a community celebration that will entertain and educate the entire family.” said Jim Buckley, CAF Dixie Wing leader. The community focus has resulted in the program being designated a Peachtree City 50th Anniversary event in 2009.

Why turn a flying museum into a living history classroom? “Our goal is to honor the Greatest Generation, the men and women who won the Second World War.” explained Buckley, who also flies several of the group’s aircraft.

Over 50 World War II veterans have attended the history festival’s opening ceremony each of the last two years.

A weekend highlight is “Keep ‘em Flying”, a WWII-theme hangar dance featuring the Peachtree Jazz Edition and Vintage Vocals, a trio that reprises the unique sound of the Andrews Sisters. Proceeds from the dance benefit historic aircraft preservation and “Education Through Living History”, the group’s WWII history program made available to schools and youth groups free of charge.

Sunday morning will begin with a jeep-top religious service familiar to millions of American servicemen during and since the Second World War.

Participating organizations include the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment (reenacted), Kelly’s Zeroes, History Flight, FDR’s Little White House, the Southern Wing of the Airmen Preservation Society, the U.S. Army Signal Corps Museum and Atlanta World War II Round Table.

Local civic organizations and schools are also invited to create and display 1940’s exhibits.

“WWII Heritage Days” is an annual program that promotes historic preservation, education and citizenship. The CAF Dixie Wing is a non-profit education organization that relies on donations and fundraisers to restore WWII aircraft and teach WWII history.

Suggested donation for “WWII Heritage Days” is $5 for Adults, Children 13 and under admitted free. The public is also asked to bring a canned food item to be donated to the Fayette Samaritans food pantry. “WWII Heritage Days” will be held rain or shine. Please no pets. PTC Flying Museum to Host Mustang Meet July 20

WWII Fighters and Ford Classic to Join Forces July 20

Classic cars will join vintage World War II aircraft when the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Dixie Wing hosts the Georgia Regional Mustang Club (GRMC) monthly meeting on Sunday, July 20th. The event will be held at the Historical Airpower Facility, Falcon Field, 1pm-5pm.

Over two dozen Ford Mustangs will be on hand, including “Eleanor”, a 1967 Mustang Shelby GT 500 Custom featured in the 2000 motion picture “Gone in 60 Seconds”. Joining the street ponies will be the CAF Dixie Wing North American P-51 Mustang, arguably the best all-around fighter of the Second World War.

“The CAF is dedicated to preserving American history by restoring and flying World War II aircraft” stated Chris Madrid, Public Information Officer, CAF Dixie Wing. “We welcome opportunities to partner with organizations like the Georgia Regional Mustang Club that share a similar passion.”

The event will be the second car meet held at the flying museum in as many months. The aviation heritage preservation organization hosted the Peachstate Region Porche Club of America inaugural Peachtree City Summer Rally June 22nd. Additional car meets are planned later in the year.

The CAF Dixie Wing Historical Airpower Facility, built in 2002, is part hangar and part workshop, but it is also a museum that includes German, Japanese and U.S. uniforms, equipment, a large collection of model airplanes, 1940’s toys and home front artifacts. Volunteers will be on hand during the Mustang Meet to provide guided tours. The public can also recreate history by purchasing a ride in one of the wing’s award-winning warbirds.

The Georgia Regional Mustang Club is a non-profit volunteer group of people dedicated to the restoration and preservation of the FORD MUSTANG. GRMC, founded in 1979, is the second oldest Chartered Mustang Club in the nation.
