Whitewater Team a Semi-Finalist for Employment Branding Challenge

Publix Super Markets is looking closely at the ideas of two students for attracting young employment applicants to their stores.

Whitewater High DECA students Yanna Banks and Lia Poulson have been selected as 12 semi-finalist teams in the Publix Brand Champion Challenge, a competition open to DECA students that involves creating a fully integrated marketing program to attract 16 to 25-year-olds to apply for work at the stores. DECA is a student organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management.

Students were given a pretend budget of $250,000 to develop their plans, and were required to create a video not exceeding 10 minutes to communicate their ideas and strategies. The competition was open to students in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

Now the students must submit a written plan of their employment branding program. Publix will select three teams to participate in the final competition round. Those teams will be invited to make in-person presentations at the corporate offices of Publix Super Markets in Lakeland, FL in March.

Semifinalists in National Achievement Scholarship Program More than Triple in Fayette County

The number of Fayette County semifinalists in the 2011 National Achievement Scholarship Program has increased 150 percent over last year. A total of seven students have been named to the list compared to two in 2010.

Onyekwere Eke and Linsey Jackson, both of Fayette County High; Seyi Amosu and Elana Burton, both of Starr’s Mill High; Kevone Hospedales, Whitewater High; and Camara Carter and Alaisha Wellons, both of Sandy Creek High, were selected from more than 160,000 students from all parts of the U.S. who requested consideration in the program when they took the 2009 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) as high school juniors.

These students are among the 1,600 Black American high school seniors nationwide who were selected as semifinalists in the 47th annual scholarship program.

To advance to the finalist level, semifinalists must present a record of high academic performance throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the school principal, earn SAT scores that confirm the PSAT/NMSQT performance, and write an essay. The semifinalist and a school official must also complete a scholarship application in which they provide information about the student’s participation in school, and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities and educational goals.

Approximately 1,300 semifinalists are expected to advance to the finalist level in the 2011 program. Every finalist will compete for one of 700 one-time National Achievement $2,500 scholarships as well as 100 Achievement Scholarship awards underwritten by corporate and business sponsors for those who meet criteria set by the grantor.

Nine Fayette County Semifinalists Named in Scholarship Program

A total of nine seniors from McIntosh, Sandy Creek and Starr’s Mill high schools are among the 400 statewide selected as semifinalists in the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Nationally, they make up the approximately 16,000 semifinalists who are competing in the 56th annual scholarship program. The 2011 semifinalists are (McIntosh High) Erika Burgess, Mary Cook, Matthew Dawson, Kathleen Newman, Robert Worley, Shiyi Zhang; (Sandy Creek) Poonim Daya; (Starr’s Mill High) Graham Bloomsmith, Justin Buchanan.

These academically talented high school seniors have the opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,400 Merit Scholarship awards worth more than $36 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements and advance to the finalist level of the competition. About 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to become finalists, and approximately half of the finalists will be selected as Merit Scholarship winners.

About 1.5 million juniors in nearly 22,000 U.S. high schools entered the 2011 National Merit Program by taking the 2009 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, which represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state. The number of semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.

To become a finalist, a semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the school principal and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier qualifying test performance. The semifinalist and a school official must submit a detailed scholarship application, which includes the student’s essay and information about the semifinalist’s participation and leadership in school and community activities.

Merit scholarship winners of 2011 will be announced April-July.

Number of Fayette County Scholarship Semifinalists Almost Double

The number of semifinalists for the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program has nearly doubled from last year.

A total of 13 seniors from Fayette County, McIntosh, Starr’s Mill and Whitewater high schools are among the approximately 16,000 semifinalists nationwide competing in the 55th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Last year seven Fayette students were semifinalists.
The 2010 semifinalists are (Fayette County High) Sonika Reddy; (McIntosh High) Lauren Anderson, Christopher Hrvoj, Nicholas Marette, Timothy Morris, Martine van Voorthuysen, Matthew Winn, Shawn Yavari; (Starr’s Mill High) George Hagler, Jessica Lambing, Kathryn McCord, Elliot Tanner; (Whitewater High) Patrick Loeffler.

Fayette County Presidential Scholar Semifinalists Named

Three graduating seniors from Fayette County's high schools have been named semifinalists for the 2009 Presidential Scholars Program.

Jennie K. Lee, Fayette County High, and Minna Choi and William S. Kearney, both of McIntosh High, are among 17 students from Georgia and 562 nationwide to be selected as semifinalists. They are the only semifinalists in the south metro area. Students chosen as scholars for the program will be announced in May.

The Presidential Scholars Program is a recognition program where application is by invitation only based on a student’s SAT or ACT scores. Students must also be graduating seniors and United States citizens to be eligible for candidacy.

Those chosen as Presidential Scholars receive an expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. in June and the Presidential Scholars medallion at a ceremony sponsored by the White House. Scholars have access to important national and international figures, including government officials, educators, authors, musicians, scientists and other accomplished people. They are also provided opportunities to wrestle with issues that concern America and the world, participate in volunteer activities to benefit those in need, attend recitals, receptions and monuments.

Over 3,000 students nationwide were selected as candidates for the program and invited to submit applications to be considered for semifinalist, and then, scholar status.

To advance to the finalist level, semifinalists must present a record of high academic performance throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the school principal, earn SAT scores that confirm the PSAT/NMSQT performance and write a self-descriptive essay. The semifinalist and a school official must also complete a scholarship application in which they provide information about the student’s participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities and educational goals.

Approximately 1,300 semifinalists are expected to fulfill additional requirements and advance to the finalist level in the 2009 competition where participants will compete for 800 achievement scholarship awards worth some $2.6 million for college undergraduate study.
