Teachers Bright Ideas Earn Grant Money from Fayette-Coweta EMC

Two Sandy Creek High teachers got a pleasant surprise from the Fayette-Coweta EMC prize patrol when they learned their Bright Ideas Grant had been accepted. Keelan Seabolt received $1,494 to implement a project to teach students about the construction of electronics that save energy. Matthew Turner received $1,500 to teach his automotive technology students the technique of airbrushing. The class will paint mailboxes and car tags that will be sold as fundraisers for Sandy Creek’s Skills USA chapter.


Fayette’s teachers have many bright ideas for their classrooms, and thanks to the Bright Ideas Grant program sponsored by the Fayette-Coweta EMC, they have the funding to make their ideas a reality.

A total of 11 teachers in the Fayette County Public School System collectively received $12,635 for grant proposals they submitted for the 2010 Bright Ideas Grant program. Grant awardees ran the gamut of educational disciplines including automotive technology, physical science, orchestra, foreign language, biology, gifted education, physics, social studies, and special needs.

Sandy Creek Student Gets Trip to Washington with Winning Essay

This summer was not the typical break from school for Anthony Taijeron-John, a rising senior at Sandy Creek High.

Anthony spent part of his summer vacation touring the nation’s capital with nearly 100 students from across Georgia as one of the essay winners selected to attend the 45th Washington Youth Tour, a prestigious, all-expense paid leadership experience sponsored by Georgia’s electric membership corporations.

Selected by Coweta-Fayette EMC, Anthony spent nine days in Washington, DC in June touring memorials, monuments, Mount Vernon, Ford’s Theater and the U.S. Supreme Court, and visiting with Georgia’s U.S. senators and representatives.

The program is designed to give students a taste of democracy in action, expose them to the nation’s rich history and encourage them to become politically aware citizens.

Apples and ArtFest Oct 17th

The weather is going to be perfect for attending Fayette County's first Apples & ArtFest event this Saturday, October 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fayette Senior Services Life Enrichment Center located at 4 Center Drive in Fayetteville (across from the Fayette County Justice Center). Nearly 40 exhibitors will be showcasing their arts, crafts, and specialties. The event is open to the public and there is no admission cost. Proceeds will benefit Fayette Senior Services, Meals On Wheels, and Grandparents Raising Grandchildren.

With all the invigoration of a crisp fall day and the charm of a county fair, the event promises to be all that you and your family love about hometown festivals. In addition to the variety of exhibitors, there will be musical entertainment and dance exhibitions featuring Eddie Huffman and the McIntosh High School Chiefettes. Sharpsburg man wins $12M Mega Millions jackpot

A Sharpsburg man is celebrating a mega win. Wayne Reese, 54, matched all of the winning numbers in Tuesday's Mega Millions drawing and won a $12 million jackpot.

Reese discovered his win Wednesday evening while checking the Georgia Lottery's Web site.

"I said, 'Whew' like Ric Flair," he said with excitement. "I shouted out to my family, 'Y'all won't believe what's right here!' "

Winning numbers for the drawing were: 2-9-28-51-53 and the Mega Ball was 19. Reese stopped at Red & Ed's Convenience Store, located at 874 Corinth Road in Newnan, for a MoonPie and a Coca-Cola Zero when he purchased the lucky Quik Pik ticket.

Reese, who is a contractor and owns a septic tank business, wants to build homes for his two adult children. He and his wife, Linda, also intend to remodel their own home.

The Reese's were already winners of the lottery. His daughter, a school teacher, attended the University of West Georgia as a lottery-funded HOPE Scholarship recipient.

"We're on a new ride now," Reese exclaimed. "It sure feels good."

Any Georgia Lottery retailer who sells a winning Mega Millions jackpot ticket can earn the $25,000 retailer incentive bonus payment. If more than one winning jackpot ticket is sold in Georgia, the retailer selling the winning tickets will share the $25,000 retailer incentive bonus. Red & Ed’s Convenience Store will receive the $25,000 retailer incentive bonus.

As with all other Georgia Lottery games, proceeds from Mega Millions will benefit education in the state of Georgia.

Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corporation has returned more than $11 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs including Georgia's HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia's Pre-K Program. Sexual Assault Reported on Peachtree City's Path System

Normally we only share the good stuff in this blog and we try to do the same on the Fayette Front Page. However, we know how many enjoy the path system in Peachtree City... families, teens, mothers with young children, individual runners, etc. We're sharing this because you need to be particularly vigilant until this guy is caught. These creeps usually don't stop once they've started. Hope they get him soon. - Editor

On August 27th, 2009, officers responded to Piedmont Fayette Hospital to investigate an incident involving a female victim reporting that she was sexually assaulted on the multi-use path system.

The victim reported that while she was on the multi-use path adjacent to Lake Kedron and the cul-de-sac of Samiel Point and Larkins Landing at approximately 5:30 a.m. this date, a white male approached her from behind and forced her to the ground. The suspect sexually assaulted the victim and fled the scene.

The suspect was described as a white male, approximately six (6) feet tall, medium build, short hair, and last seen wearing a dark shirt.

Investigators from the Peachtree City Police Department are following up on leads associated with this incident.

Dominique Wilkins Scores Big for Diabetes in Fayette County

/PRNewswire/ -- Dominique Wilkins, NBA Hall-of-Famer and advocate for healthier living, visited Towne Club today to create awareness of the fact that seniors at risk for diabetes can get a free diabetes screening test in their health care provider's office. This is the core message of the Medicare Diabetes Screening Project (MDSP), a community-based effort that has been active in Georgia since 2007 and is co-chaired nationally by the American Diabetes Association, the Healthcare Leadership Council, and Novo Nordisk, and is supported by more than 20 organizations representing the interests of seniors and health care providers.

Screening seniors for diabetes is urgently needed. According to a study in the February 2009 issue of Diabetes Care, 32% of adults ages 65 and older have diabetes. What's more, almost half (46%) of those seniors with diabetes don't know they have it - they have not been diagnosed. In addition to those with diabetes, another 40% of adults ages 65 and older have pre-diabetes, putting them at very high risk of developing diabetes and heart disease, and it is likely that most of them are unaware of their status.

"Diabetes has touched my family multiple times," said Mr. Wilkins, "and we've seen first-hand the devastation it can cause. That's why I'm proud to be here today, to encourage seniors to get the ball rolling by asking their health care providers about getting screened for diabetes." Mr. Wilkins reminded those seniors in attendance that if they get screened for diabetes and work with their health care providers, they can take steps to either prevent or manage the disease. Featured at today's event at Towne Club was Sen. Ronnie Chance (R - District 16), Senate Finance Chairman and a member of Georgia's Workforce Investment Board. "Everyone has a role to play in the fight against diabetes," said Sen. Chance. "That's why I am delighted to see the business, health and medical and senior-serving communities all coming together to improve the health of seniors in Fayette County."

The day started at the Raising Star Middle School where Dominique Wilkins helped "tip off" registration for the Peachtree City Youth Basketball Association and along with Senator Chance discussed the importance of children forming lifelong healthy habits to prevent diabetes and heart disease.

The diabetes awareness event at Towne Club is one part of a larger day of activities to launch the Fayette Healthy Community Partnership, a collaboration of health care provider organizations, employers, retailers, and other businesses and groups brought together by locals Daye Bexley and Terry Womack to promote health and wellness in Fayette and Coweta Counties. Leaders of the Partnership include the Piedmont Fayette and Newnan Hospitals and the Piedmont Heart Institute, Kroger Stores and Pharmacies, the Center for Health Transformation, and Novo Nordisk.

In addition to the visit by Mr. Wilkins and Sen. Chance to the Peachtree City Youth Basketball Association at the Rising Starr Middle School Gym, today's events included an appearance by Mr. Wilkins at Kroger Fayetteville, where Kroger and Piedmont Fayette Hospital health care professionals combined forces to conduct a Health Fair focused on diabetes, blood pressure, cholesterol and Body Mass index.

A key component of the Fayette Healthy Community Partnership is the Heart Health Scorecard, developed by the Piedmont Heart Institute. It contains questions to ask providers, as well as a handy chart for recording the results of a variety of important tests and risk assessments related to general health and well-being, such as weight circumference, blood pressure, body mass index, blood glucose (sugar), cholesterol, and triglycerides.

"More than 100,000 copies of this scorecard will be distributed to adults in Fayette and Coweta Counties over the course of the next year," said William A. Blincoe, M.D., cardiologist with the Piedmont Heart Institute. "We're proud to be a part of this community initiative and believe our Heart Health Scorecard will make a difference in the lives and health of thousands of the people we serve."

Pedestrians on Paths – Left or Right?

Peachtree City’s ordinance governing use of the paths indicates that “normal rules of the road apply” and that “slower traffic should keep right.” The City often receives questions about where pedestrians should be because many people have been taught to walk on the left side of roadways so they can see oncoming traffic, noting that many golf cart drivers and bicyclists do not give the mandatory audible signal when approaching pedestrians from behind.

Georgia law is a little ambiguous when it comes to pedestrians – it only stipulates that pedestrians should walk or stand on the left side, facing oncoming traffic, on two-laned roads, and the paths do not have two marked lanes.

Rather than create an additional rule to publicize and enforce, the City encourages walkers to keep to the edge of the pavement, right or left, to leave room for bicycles and golf carts. Golf cart drivers and bicyclists are also reminded that, when approaching a pedestrian from behind on the paths, an audible signal is required - horn, bell, or a cheery call of “on your left (or right)!” as you approach.

Good News – CSX Bridge Notice to Proceed!!

The City has received notice to proceed from the State for the CSX Bridge and tunnel approaches. The project will be going out to bid, with a September bid deadline. The Department of Transportation (DOT) will review the bids and then give authorization to Council to award the project.

Traffic Advisory – Waterwood Bend Closing August 24

Beginning August 24, Waterwood Bend will be closed at the southern intersection with Peachtree Parkway (south of Booth Middle School) for a stormwater construction project. Residents of the area should use the northern entrance from Peachtree Parkway for the duration of the project, which should be completed by the beginning of December.

Thefts from cars, garages – Police Department Reminders

On August 14th and 15th, between 10:00 pm and 9:00 am, numerous items were stolen from autos and garages in the Heritage Subdivision, located on Highway 74. There was no forced entry to any of the cars and garages (residents had left their cars and garages unlocked or open). Stolen items included radios, money, a laptop, GPS units, an IPod, wallets, and alcohol.

The Peachtree City Police Department wants to remind residents and visitors of the following tips:

Keep vehicles and homes locked.
Do not leave valuable items in vehicles.
Call the police if you see any suspicious activity, or hear suspicious noises.
Be aware of you surroundings. Thieves will watch areas and will target cars, homes, and people who make themselves easy victims. Keep this in mind when placing packages, purses or valuables in the car – keep them out of sight, or better yet, remember that . . .
The safest place for valuables is on your person or secured in your home.

Fayette-Coweta Chapter of IAAP Offers Free Seminar with Glenda Y. Hicks

This upcoming Monday, August 10, the Fayette-Coweta Chapter of International Association of Administrative Professionals will be offering a free seminar, open to the general public. Glenda Y. Hicks, CPA, will be talking about "Women in Transition." She will be addressing the different stages of life that women go through in terms of career, relationships, etc.

Glenda Y. Hicks is a Certified Public Accountant, licensed in the states of Georgia and Florida. She has over 20 years of experience and owns a CPA firm in Marietta, Georgia. Ms. Hicks exclusively serves the nonprofit community, by providing a myriad of consulting services in the area of financial management and tax research, in a capacity as CFO by the Hour as well as on a project basis. She is a member of the Professional Women Network, an international training organization, and is trained in offering personal and professional development workshops primarily focused on women's issues including Managing Stress, Leadership & Management Development, the Superwoman Syndrome, Building Positive Self Esteem and more. These workshops are offered to both nonprofit and for-profit organizations, as well as professional associations and conferences.

Coweta's Top Teacher Speaks to Coweta-Fayette Rotary Club

Angela Brown, Teacher of the Year Coweta County 2009, was the guest speaker for the Coweta-Fayette Rotary Club. Angela was selected as “Top Teacher” from among the Teachers of the Year from each of Coweta County’s 30 public schools. Brown is a 5th grade teacher at Ruth Hill Elementary School in Coweta County.

Rotary is a volunteer service organization of over 1.2 million members in over 33,000 clubs worldwide. Coweta-Fayette is the newest chartered Club in District 6900 of Rotary International, which includes 72 clubs with approximately 5,000 members in Georgia.

Chamber Collaborates with SCORE to Help Small Businesses

Fayette businesses have a new option for help with everything from writing a business plan to locating available resources to face-to-face counseling. The Fayette Chamber is opening its office to a new SCORE chapter to provide mentoring to new and existing small businesses. And the best news is that the SCORE services are FREE!

SCORE is a national organization of almost 11,000 volunteers in 375 chapters serving over 500,000 clients yearly. The Atlanta Chapter alone has over 75 counselors in 15 offices throughout the metro area. The new Fayette chapter is offering services to Fayette and Coweta businesses.

SCORE counselors will schedule appointments on Fridays from 11 am to 1 pm. Appointments can be made by registering online at www.scoreatlanta.org.

With a winning season under their belt the Tyrone Xtreme led the U10 league with an impressive 12 – 0 record. On June 12th at Handley Park after defeating the Rex Yankees, Panhandle Cardinals, and the North Clayton Braves the team walked away with a 4-0 record and the Sub-state title.

A State Championship in their sights and a 4-1 win in the state tournament led them on to victory on June 26th as they readily defeated the Hopewell Gladiators, Rex Yankees, and Sharon Springs Blue All Stars to take home the State Title.

“The Old Guy” Graduates with a Clayton State MBA

The first cohort of Clayton State University’s Masters in Business Administration (MBA) graduated on Saturday, May 9. Although all 31 MBA graduates accomplished a notable milestone, none were more notable than that of Fayetteville’s Ernest Coward, at the age of 74, the oldest student to earn a Clayton State MBA.

Long before joining the procession at the University’s spring Commencement ceremonies, Coward was a bit apprehensive about returning to school.

“All these people will be my grandchildren’s age,” he said at the time he matriculated into the first Clayton State MBA cohort. “And I’ll be the old guy.”

Actually, Coward’s history with Clayton State goes back to when the University was still a junior college, when he took courses in computer programming through the Division of Continuing Education.

“I’ve been coming here for years taking community courses,” Coward says.

After originally studying chemistry in Alabama more than 50 years ago, Coward decided to go into the service as the Korean War was ending. However, he promised his mother that he would go back to college.

“I got patriotic one weekend, and joined the Navy flight school,” he says. “I spent four years flying helicopters, and after I came out I joined the Air Force Reserve and flew for 12 years.”

Coward then continued his journey as a manufacturer, producing things like cosmetics, lingerie and gloves. After retired after 38 years in business.

“After I retired and did all the things I wanted to do, played all the golf I wanted to play, I decided that I needed to do something constructive,” he says. “Seven months after I retired I called Clayton State University to ask about the possibility of returning to school. The lady on the phone replied, `if you get me your transcripts you can start in two weeks!’”

As a result, Coward did not have time to back out. Initially he wanted pursue a chemistry degree, however, he learned that the University did not offer that degree. Undaunted, he turned to the School of Business.

“Between Dr. Jacob Chacko, dean of School of Business, and Dr. Michael Deis, director of the MBA program, and my personal instructor, I decided Clayton State University was the place to be,” he says.

Coward was surprised how his fellow MBA candidates migrated towards him, and how interested they were in his past experiences.

“So many of them wanted to hear about how things were many years ago, because I graduated from high school in 1952,” he says. “As you can see, I am no spring chicken.

“Getting back into the gear of things was challenging since I had been out of school for almost 40 years. Refreshing my memory, managing study time, and being ready for a test, those were somewhat challenging.”

However, since Coward had managed to keep up with technology, the University's laptop requirement didn’t hold him back.

“I grew up with computers. I came up during the time when you had to write your own software," he says. "I challenged myself to learn how to work a computer."

Following his graduation, Coward is a strong advocate for the University and the School of Business.

“This campus and professors are great. The School of Business is unbelievable!” he exclaims. “The University is full of professors who have world and academic experience. You get Ivy League schooling for an economical price.

“The most memorable moment for me is how I have been accepted. If Clayton State University offered a doctorate, I would keep going.”

8th Annual Taste of Fayette May 17th

It’s that time of year again when downtown Fayetteville comes alive with fine art, food, and family fun. This Sunday, May 17, welcomes the 8th Annual Taste of Fayette which showcases local restaurants selling affordable samples of their finest offerings. “Tastes” range from .50 to $3.00 each, so if you just need a snack or you’ve come for a full lunch, they’ve got you covered. Participating vendors this year include The Mooving Café, Taco Mac, Smoothie King, Partner’s Pizza, My Favorite Cookie, Mangarelli’s Pizzeria, Grinds and Wines, Gezzo’s Surf and Grille, Johnny’s New York Pizza, Cool Flavors Italian Ice, Baci Italian Cuisine, and Atlanta Margarita Man. Also returning to defend their crowns are the 2008 “Finest Taste” winner, Longbranch Steakhouse and Seafood, and “Most Amazing Booth” winner, Bugaboo Creek Steak House.

All food is sold on a token system, so be sure to bring your cash to redeem for tokens. While munching on the various tastes, visitors can also stroll through the Non-Food section showcasing a variety of local retail and informational vendors.

This event is designed for the whole family, so be sure to check out the Food Lion Kids Corner with jumps, slides, face painting and Buzzly, the fire safety bee. Also enjoy live entertainment all day with R&B Inc. performing your faves from the 60’s and 70’s.

In an effort to help reduce costs, most of these kids attractions are at reduced prices or even free of charge. Fayetteville Main Street Director, Brian Wismer explained, “I wanted the event to be as affordable as possible for our families; and I know that if the kids are able to have a good time, it is a lot easier for the parents to enjoy.”

The event kicks off at Noon and runs until 5pm. The Taste of Fayette is held at the Gazebo at Stonewall Village in conjunction with the Fayette Fine Art Show on the courthouse lawn, and the Taste of Living History displays at the Holliday-Dorsey-Fife Museum directly across the street.

Fayetteville Police Department Hosts 2009 Junior Police Academy

The Fayetteville Police Department is hosting the 2009 Junior Police Academy.

This year the Fayetteville Police Department is hosting their sixth annual Junior Police Academy. This is an academy for children who have completed the sixth grade and/or going into the seventh, eight, or ninth grades and live in Fayette County. The dates for the academy are July 27-30, 2009. The academy day begins at 8AM and is over by 4PM. The week consists of the recruits learning many different facets of police work to include but not limited to Defensive Tactics, Traffic Laws, DUI laws, K-9, Crime Scene Processing, Handcuffing…just to name a few.

If you are interested, please come by the Fayetteville Police Department and pick up an application. The applications are due in no later than June 1, 2009 by 5PM.

FC Parks & Rec Summer Program Registration May 4th

The Fayette County Parks and Recreation Department will begin registration for the Summer 2009 brochure on Monday, May 4, 2009. Peachtree City Celebrates Arbor Day

Friday, April 24, was National Arbor Day, and Peachtree City celebrated by planting a Willow Oak near the Peachtree City Library.

Community Forester Beryl Budd was on hand to assist in planting the tree donated by City staff, which replaced an large old oak that had to be removed when it threatened the parking area at the Library.

Young residents John David Anderson and Spencer Green, who stopped by to observe the ceremony with their moms, helped plant the tree at the 10:30 a.m. ceremony

Peachtree City: Developmental Services Closing from Noon – 1:00 p.m. beginning June 1

Following a reduction in staffing in Peachtree City’s Developmental Services Division, the offices will be closing from noon until 1:00 p.m. beginning on Monday, June 1.

The division includes the Planning and Zoning Department, Engineering, Stormwater, Building Department, Code Enforcement, and the Permits Office. This closure will also affect applicants coming to City Hall for Occupational Tax Certificates, which require zoning approval from the Planning Department.

Developmental Services offices are located on the lower level of City Hall, 153 Willowbend Road. Offices will be open from 8:00 a.m. until noon, and from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00.

Interim Developmental Services Director David Rast said, “Although we realize closing for the noon hour may cause a slight inconvenience for residents and builders who need to obtain permits, this decision will allow all the division staff to devote the maximum amount of time to their daily duties without having to cover lunch breaks.”

The division is operating at reduced staffing levels following a reduction-in-workforce approved at the April 2 City Council Meeting. This reduction was attributed to the City’s current and projected financial status and the limited number of residential , commercial and industrial applications being received due to the downturn in the economy. Although several builders at the City Council meeting expressed concern about reduced levels of service from the Building Department, Rast indicated it was their intent to provide the same level of services, albeit with a reduced workforce.

The City sent letters to all applicants with open permits explaining these changes and identifying which staff person would be assuming the duties of those whose positions were eliminated. Rast said they would also be posting notices to advise frequent visitors to the department of the adjusted operating hours.

Fayette High Student Takes Third in Art Contest

U.S. Rep. Lynn Westmoreland congratulates Caleb Brown of Fayette County High School on finishing third in the 3rd Congressional District art contest. Caleb’s pencil sketch portrays two football players grinding it out against one another on the gridiron.

“You don’t have to be a sports fan to appreciate Caleb’s fine drawing,” Westmoreland said. “This contest included 68 entries from high school students across the district. That’s tough competition. I can’t recall a time when we had a freshman finish in the top three. That’s quite a tribute to the artist and to his teacher, Pamela Watkins.

“Every year, I’m amazed at the depth of artistic talent that we have in the 3rd District,” Westmoreland continued. “We’re lucky to have a distinguished panel of judges and I don’t envy their task of choosing between so many great works.

“Caleb’s eligible for three more years of competition, so we may see him come back as the winner who gets his art displayed in the Capitol for a year.”

Westmoreland gave special thanks to the judges: Bette Hickman of Newnan (executive director of Global Achievers), Vicki Turner of Fayetteville (director of advertising/marketing for AIS Computers), Mark Lucas of Columbus (Lucas Studios of Art) and Tim Williams of Greystone Power in Douglasville.
