Fayette Celebrates Exceptional Children’s Week

A celebration of Fayette’s exceptional students will take place March 1-5 in schools throughout the Fayette County Public School System.

The goals of the week are to promote awareness of and interaction with Fayette’s exceptional children, promote community knowledge, understanding and interest, as well as inform students and teachers to the potentialities of exceptional students.

A variety of activities focusing on the theme “Fueling the Road for Success” will take place at all school levels for both students and staff. Participants will learn what it is like to be an exceptional child by participating in activities that will simulate various types of disabilities. The event will also give members of the community an opportunity to evaluate the role they play in the development and support of children with exceptional needs.

A proclamation declaring March 1-5 as Exceptional Children’s Week was presented to the Exceptional Children’s Department during the regular meeting of the Fayette County Board of Education on February 9.

Parents Invited to Attend Intellectual Disability Eligibility Workshop November 10 in Fayette County

A parent workshop on Intellectual Disability eligibility will be presented by the Fayette County Public Schools Exceptional Children’s Services Department on November 5 in the media center of Rivers Elementary beginning at 6 p.m.

Discussion will focus on how mild, moderate, severe and profound intellectual disability eligibilities are determined, the terminology used and the services available for students in the general and adapted curriculum settings. A question and answer session for general questions will follow.

Cathy Skinner-Robertson, adapted curriculum consultant for the county’s Exceptional Children’s Services Department, will lead the discussion. There will be light refreshments and door prizes for participants.

Kindness Kids of Braelinn Elementary School Collect Eggs for Adaptive Egg Hunt

Braelinn Elementary’s Kindness Kids Club collected over 1100 plastic eggs during Exceptional Children’s Week. The eggs will be used in the Adaptive Egg Hunt, a communitywide inclusive egg hunt for children with and without disabilities, to be held at 10 AM on Saturday, March 28 at the Fayette Family YMCA soccer field. The lead sponsor for this event is the Fayette County Navigator Team.

The Kindness Kids Club is a club for 3rd and 4th graders. The club encourages students to help others in their community and to perform "Random Acts of Kindness" for others when possible.

Braelinn Elementary School is a 2008 Gold Award School for Statewide Accountability System from the Department of Education, and is located in Peachtree City, Georgia.
