Sandy Creek Student Gets Trip to Washington with Winning Essay

This summer was not the typical break from school for Anthony Taijeron-John, a rising senior at Sandy Creek High.

Anthony spent part of his summer vacation touring the nation’s capital with nearly 100 students from across Georgia as one of the essay winners selected to attend the 45th Washington Youth Tour, a prestigious, all-expense paid leadership experience sponsored by Georgia’s electric membership corporations.

Selected by Coweta-Fayette EMC, Anthony spent nine days in Washington, DC in June touring memorials, monuments, Mount Vernon, Ford’s Theater and the U.S. Supreme Court, and visiting with Georgia’s U.S. senators and representatives.

The program is designed to give students a taste of democracy in action, expose them to the nation’s rich history and encourage them to become politically aware citizens.

High School American History Essay Winners Announced by DAR

Nicole Gagnier, a junior at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic High School, was recently named the winner of the American History Essay Contest by the James Waldrop Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution.

Kaitlyn Chapman, a junior at Whitewater High School in Fayetteville, was recently announced as the First Runner-up.

The essay was on the subject of Christopher Columbus.

The James Waldrop Chapter DAR is chartered in Fayetteville, GA.

Eldredge Receives DAR American History Essay Award

Maggie Eldredge, a 5th grader at Peachtree City Elementary School in Peachtree City, was recently announced as the 5th grade winner of the 2010 American History Essay Contest sponsored by the James Waldrop Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution. Eldredge wrote her essay from the viewpoint of a settler who was present on May 10, 1869, when a golden spike completed the First Transcontinental Railroad. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Eldredge.

The James Waldrop Chapter DAR is chartered in Fayetteville, GA.

Marin Takes Top Prize in the “If I Were Mayor” Essay Contest

The City of Fayetteville recently offered students an opportunity to state what they would do if they were mayor. One student’s ideas stood above the rest, earning her a special recognition.

The Fayetteville City Council recognized Emily Marin, a sixth grade student at Fayette Middle School, on April 16 for writing the winning essay that outlined her ideas for improving the city’s community. Her suggestions include sponsoring a “Go Green” fair to educate families about the benefits of adopting an eco-friendly lifestyle, organizing volunteer-ran study clubs to assist low-income students whose families cannot afford private tutoring and hosting a Spring Fling to raise funds for the study club and the city’s other volunteer programs.

In addition to the recognition, she was awarded four free concert tickets to Fayetteville’s amphitheater.

Isis Freeman's Christopher Columbus Essay Heads to State Competition

Each year, the James Waldrop Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution joins the National Society in sponsoring American History Essays for Fayette County Students. Isis Freeman, a junior at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic High School, was recently named the chapter winner for her engaging entry into the Christopher Columbus Essay Contest.

Freeman's essay has also won the District Competition and is now headed to the Georgia State Society DAR Contest.

Rising Starr Student Places In Voice of Democracy Competition

A Rising Starr Middle student’s essay and recorded speech outlining how the service and sacrifice of America’s veterans benefits youth today took third place honors in the 2009 Voice of Democracy Scholarship Competition sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Peachtree City, Post 9949.

Sarah Graham received a $100 U.S. Savings Bond for her winning essay and was recognized during the VFW’s annual Christmas Party on December 12 at the Gathering Place in Peachtree City.

Also recognized at the party were two home schooled students who were the first and second place winners. Benjamin Horton took first place and received a $200 U.S. Savings Bond and Christopher Horton placed second and earned a $150 U.S. Savings Bond.

The contest gives students in grades 9-12 attending public, private, parochial or home school an opportunity to express their thoughts on a patriotic theme, allowing them the opportunity to improve both writing and speaking skills while competing for awards. This year’s theme was “Service and Sacrifice by America’s Veterans Benefits Today’s Youth by...”
