Musket shots were fired on the old Fayette County Courthouse grounds on July 4th as the James Waldrop Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution and the Marquis de Lafayette Chapter Sons of the American Revolution gathered to celebrate America's independence at the annual "Let Freedom Ring" ceremony.
Names of the signers of the Declaration of Independence were read aloud, and followed with a bell being rung for each of the 13 original colonies.
The Declaration of Independence is a statement adopted by Congress which listed the grievances against King George III and announced the 13 colonies were no longer a part of the English Empire. The vote to declare independence from England was on July 2, 1776, but the statement was not adopted until July 4, 1776. By this time, the American colonies had been at war with England for over a year. While adopted on July 4th, it is generally believed the final signatures on the Declaration were not completed until August 2, 1776.
The James Waldrop Chapter DAR and the Marquis de Lafayette Chapter SAR are chartered in Fayetteville.
