Two individuals from Fayette County recently graduated from Clayton State University with master’s degrees.
Fayetteville’s Barbara James, a teacher at Rising Starr Middle School and the first recipient (in 2008) of the Clayton State University Retirees Association Scholarship, has earned a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies. An additional story on James will be forthcoming next week.
Peachtree City’s Nicholas Ross Cushnie earned a Master of Arts in Teaching Mathematics, one of the first two master’s degrees awarded from the University’s College of Information and Mathematical Sciences.
A total of 20 individuals will receive master’s degrees from Clayton State at the Dec. 10, Fall 2010 Hooding Ceremony. A unit of the University System of Georgia, Clayton State University is an outstanding comprehensive metropolitan university located 15 miles southeast of downtown Atlanta.

McIntosh Mock Trial Team Headed for State Finals
The mock trial team at McIntosh High has become the second in the school system’s history to advance to the state competition.
The team won the regional championship competing against Sandy Creek High and Starr’s Mill High (the first team to compete at the state level last year), in addition to three Newton County schools. McIntosh is one of 16 schools in the state that will compete in the Georgia Mock Trail Competition at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center March 13-14.
Team members include Christina Bowman, Femi Brinson, Moroni DeMoors, Dalton Hoyer, Maragaret Jones, Zainab Kamara, Evan McCloskey, Taylor Morgan, Cailin O’Brien, Hope Slaughter, Maegan Stalvey, Rachel White, and Matthew Winn. The primary school coach is Marcus Broadhead and the attorney coach is Brandon Taylor.
The winner of the state tournament will represent Georgia in the national competition May 5-9 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania competing against 42 state champion teams from across the country and around the world.

Our Lady of Victory Recognized at Junior Beta Club State Convention
National Junior Beta Club recognizes academic excellence and promotes the ideals of character, service and leadership among elementary school students. Through community service projects, students are encouraged to live the National Junior Beta Club motto “Let Us Lead by Serving Others.” Students are shown here photographed with Archbishop, Wilton D. Our Lady of Victory Catholic School, located in Tyrone, Georgia, was recognized for outstanding leadership and won four of the top awards at the annual Junior Beta Club State Convention in Macon, Georgia, on November 20th & 21st.
Morgan M., an 8th grade student, was recognized for her dedicated leadership as the Junior Beta Club State Secretary for the 2008-09 school year. She is the first student from Our Lady of Victory to serve as a state officer. In the Science competition, 8th grade student, Steven J., won first place. He competed in the Division II category, which includes 8th grade and 9th grade students. Tori K., an 8th grade student, placed 2nd in the Oratorical segment. She also competed in the Division II category. Cristina C., 6th grade, took 3rd place in the English - Division I competition. Duke K., 6th grade, received 5th place honors for his creative entry in the Wreath category.

USS Georgia Flag Visits Fayette County
Governor Sonny Perdue and the USS GEORGIA Return to Service (RTS) Committee announced the USS Georgia Flag Project recently. The Project is an effort to take the Georgia state flag across the entire state and into all 159 Georgia Counties. The flag is travelling across the state, so that everyone may participate in welcoming the USS Georgia home. March 28, the flag will reunite with the Submarine in Kings Bay.“This is an exciting project because it allows all Georgians to take pride in our armed forces,” said Governor Sonny Perdue. “It is noteworthy that this tour allows all 159 Georgia counties to participate in welcoming the USS Georgia home.”
The submarine’s future was jeopardized in 1994 when the Nuclear Posture Review determined that the U.S. military had a surplus of Trident Submarines– 10 on the East Coast at Kings Bay and eight on the West Coast at Bangor, WA. The Nuclear Posture Review committee made a decision that four of the 18 submarines would be eliminated.
This sparked the U.S. Navy to keep in service the four submarines and convert them from strategic deterrence submarines to a precision strike and special operation force capable submarine.
“We have worked diligently with the 16 Georgia Regional Development Centers in planning this unprecedented project to take the Georgia State Flag on a trip across the entire state and into all 159 Georgia Counties,” said Don Giles (Captain, U.S. Navy Ret.), Navy League member and RTS Committee Flag Project Coordinator. “The response at scheduled meetings with County Commissioners in every county has been enthusiastic. To date, attendees at the first 40 counties ceremonial events reveal that true patriotism is alive in Georgia and that Georgians are truly supportive of the men and women who serve in our great Navy and in all our uniformed services.”
Giles has worked with the Georgia Regional Development Centers in planning the USS Georgia Flag Project. This flag is to be presented by Governor Perdue to the Commanding Officer of the USS GEORGIA at the Return to Service Ceremony in Kings Bay on March 28th, 2008.
Chairman of the committee and of the events surrounding the Return to Service (RTS), Sheila M. McNeill, is a past National President of the Navy League of the United States. Ms. McNeill said, “It is very rare to have a namesake ship home-ported in its home state. We are very pleased to have Governor Perdue as our Honorary Chairman. Our committee is working on a series of special events to show our appreciation for the dedicated service to our country by the men and women of the most powerful warship in the world, USS Georgia.”
The USS GEORGIA is 560 feet in length, displaces over 18,000 tons submerged and can carry a crew of 15 officers, 139 enlisted crew members and up to 66 Special Operations Forces for a sustained, long endurance deployment.
