McIntosh Makes High Q History

Anyone watching High Q (the scholastic high school competition on WSB-TV Channel 2) Sunday afternoon witnessed history in the making as the McIntosh High Academic Team garnered the most points ever earned by a single team on the game show.

McIntosh scored 910 points to Grady High School’s respectable 460 points. Not only did McIntosh win, earning the highest score ever, but also the combined score of the two teams was the highest in the show’s 25-year history.

Members of McIntosh’s Academic Team are Karen Anderson (captain), Logan Austin, Scott Bradford, and Nathan Pearson. Team coach Lynne Bruschetti says reading and retention is what makes the team successful.

“They are inquisitive students who read everything they can get their hands on. When they read, they remember everything that they read,” she says.

The team practices at least once a week from August until the end of the season in February, but they often get in a second session by joining the Junior Varsity practice. In addition to studying subjects such as history, math, literature, science and the arts, the team prepared for High Q by looking at current events that were making headlines the week of the competition.

This was the first year in several seasons of High Q that a high school from the Fayette County Public School System had appeared on the show; systems are chosen at random each year. In order to determine which high school would represent Fayette, a local competition between the county’s high school academic teams was held.

McIntosh will attempt to repeat their stellar performance on January 16 when the team returns to High Q to take on Walton High.

High Q airs weekly Sunday afternoons on WSB-TV Channel 2.

The Sandy Creek High Air Force Junior ROTC drill team placed in the top three at the Mundy’s Mill Invitational Classic Drill Meet.

Sandy Creek’s team, which is in its third year, had its best competition finish to-date, placing third out of a total of 10 Air Force Junior ROTC drill teams from area high schools.

Meet competition involves multiple events judged for precision and accuracy. Each drill routine must be executed with a set sequence of commands. The commands must be called out perfectly and the entire squad must perform each movement in unison.

In addition to the overall third place finish, the team also placed second in the Unarmed Regulation Drill, commanded by Cadet Katie McKennon, third in Unarmed Regulation Inspection and third in Armed Regulation Drill commanded by Kendrick Dixson.

“These results are reflective of the hard work the cadets put into the preparation for this meet.
Each cadet was so proud of their efforts and so excited to bring back trophies. This type of performance further encourages the team to continue to excel in these types of competitions,” Davidson says.

The drill team will compete next in the Blue Devil Drill Meet in Marietta on December 12 and will likely participate in the state drill meet in March.

A Fayette County First: High School Mock Trial Team Heads to State Finals

The mock trial team at Starr’s Mill High has made history by becoming the first team in Fayette County to compete at the state level.

The team competed in the high school Region 12 championship round against Ola High School in Henry County, securing a second place finish and the opportunity to participate in a wildcard draw for the state finals.

A random drawing was conducted from the 2nd place winners in the seven southern mock trial regions with Starr’s Mill receiving the Southern Wildcard and the privilege to advance to the state finals tournament March 14-15 at the Gwinnett Justice Center in Lawrenceville.

As the Southern Wildcard winner, the Starr’s Mill team will compete on equal footing with the 14 regional champion teams and the Northern Wildcard team. Starr’s Mill will have the same opportunity to advance to the semi-final and on to the final found of competition for the state championship as every other team at the tournament.

“We are very much looking forward to having the Starr’s Mill team join us at state this year and hope that the community will join us in congratulating them on this achievement and in wishing the Starr’s Mill team the very best as they prepare for the state competition,” says Stacy Rieke, Georgia mock trail coordinator of the Young Lawyers Division of the State Bar of Georgia.

Braelinn 14U Intermediate Tennis Team Smashing Fall Season

The Braelinn - Holleman team recently won the 14 and under intermediate division of the USTA Southern Crescent Junior Team Tennis program. The team, based at Peachtree City's Braelinn Golf Club, competed against opponents from the Newnan Country Club, Woodcreek and Highgrove subdivisions during the Fall 2008 season.
