Garden Art Show Features Work of Young Artists April 21

Enjoy art, music and nature at the second annual Houston Garden Art Show taking place April 21 at Tyrone Elementary from 3:30-6:30 p.m.

Patrons will enjoy strolling through the school’s garden to the cool sounds of the Sandy Creek High School Jazz Band while browsing the framed drawings/paintings and ceramic pieces on display. Attendees are welcome to bring their lawn chairs, relax and listen to the live concert that begins at 5 p.m.

Admission to the show and concert is free. Some of the framed artwork will be available for purchase: $28 for one or $50 for two (cash or check only). Proceeds from the sale will be used to purchase art supplies for next year.

Fayette County Student Art Selected for Exhibition in Kennesaw

Two Fayette County High art students will have their work featured in the All State Art Symposium at Kennesaw State University February 7-27.

Casey Mill and Caleb Brown are among a select group of artists chosen from schools throughout Georgia to exhibit their work and compete for awards. Mill’s work, titled “Look Back,” is a 18 X 24 pen and ink drawing created in response to an investigation into the work of M.C. Escher. “Self Portrait” by Brown is also in ink, but features a technique called stippling (thousands of tiny dots) to create a range of values.

The purpose of the All State Art Symposium, which is open to all high school students, is to provide cultural opportunities, develop advanced studio skills and cultivate aesthetic appreciation in art and design. Awards for the show will be announced February 27.
Both students are under the instruction of Fayette County High visual art teacher Pamela Woodworth-Watkins.

Fayette High Student Takes Third in Art Contest

U.S. Rep. Lynn Westmoreland congratulates Caleb Brown of Fayette County High School on finishing third in the 3rd Congressional District art contest. Caleb’s pencil sketch portrays two football players grinding it out against one another on the gridiron.

“You don’t have to be a sports fan to appreciate Caleb’s fine drawing,” Westmoreland said. “This contest included 68 entries from high school students across the district. That’s tough competition. I can’t recall a time when we had a freshman finish in the top three. That’s quite a tribute to the artist and to his teacher, Pamela Watkins.

“Every year, I’m amazed at the depth of artistic talent that we have in the 3rd District,” Westmoreland continued. “We’re lucky to have a distinguished panel of judges and I don’t envy their task of choosing between so many great works.

“Caleb’s eligible for three more years of competition, so we may see him come back as the winner who gets his art displayed in the Capitol for a year.”

Westmoreland gave special thanks to the judges: Bette Hickman of Newnan (executive director of Global Achievers), Vicki Turner of Fayetteville (director of advertising/marketing for AIS Computers), Mark Lucas of Columbus (Lucas Studios of Art) and Tim Williams of Greystone Power in Douglasville.
