April = Art + Awards for Young Artists

The month of April has brought showers of awards for visual arts students at Fayette County High.

The school was the only one from Fayette, and just one of 35 statewide, to have student work juried into the Georgia High School Ceramic Symposium held April 16 at the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts in Newnan. The two students whose pieces were showcased were Amy Donadeo and Katie Trebendis.

Katie Trebendis, along with fellow student AJ Klemp, has been accepted into the Allstate Honors Art Exhibition that will be held at Kennesaw State University May 6-7. Once again, Fayette County High is the only high school in the county to have artwork accepted into the competition. The school’s students are up against others from some of the best art schools in the state including the DeKalb School for the Art and Savannah Arts Academy.

“This event is very competitive. It is a great honor for our students to be selected and have their work up against the best student artists in the state,” says Pamela Woodworth-Watkins, Fayette County High’s visual art and design teacher.

Also, Jeni Hill was Fayette County High’s winner in the Creative Self-Expression Show sponsored by the Great Frame Up of Peachtree City. Her work is being shipped to the national competition in Los Angeles where it will be judged by the show’s national spokesperson, actress and artist Jane Seymour, along with a judging panel. Two winners will receive a $2,000 scholarship.

Apples and ArtFest Oct 17th

The weather is going to be perfect for attending Fayette County's first Apples & ArtFest event this Saturday, October 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fayette Senior Services Life Enrichment Center located at 4 Center Drive in Fayetteville (across from the Fayette County Justice Center). Nearly 40 exhibitors will be showcasing their arts, crafts, and specialties. The event is open to the public and there is no admission cost. Proceeds will benefit Fayette Senior Services, Meals On Wheels, and Grandparents Raising Grandchildren.

With all the invigoration of a crisp fall day and the charm of a county fair, the event promises to be all that you and your family love about hometown festivals. In addition to the variety of exhibitors, there will be musical entertainment and dance exhibitions featuring Eddie Huffman and the McIntosh High School Chiefettes. Special features include fun and games at the Kids Apple COREner, the Granny Smith Memory Tree where attendees can support Meals on Wheels and Grandparents Raising Grandchildren by purchasing an "apple" in honor of a loved one, and the Apple-A-Day Healthy Living "Orchard".

A variety of food will be available for purchase, including culinary specialties by local Pastry Chef Lori Bean, along with a variety of pastry artisans. Upscale Pizza will be warming up the crowds with their famous pizza, and Todd Rossi-Fayette Senior Services’ Executive Chef will be serving Ultimate Sloppy Joes and his signature Waldorf Salad.

Individuals who have a talent for baking or cooking are encouraged to enter the Everything Apple Recipe Contest for a chance to win $100, $50, or $25 for the best "anything apple" recipe. Fayette County High Art Students Earn Top Honors

Fayette County High School’s visual arts program has been busy racking up awards and honors this spring.

Senior Aja Adams and junior Helen Patti were juried into the Atlanta High School Art Exhibition that was featured at the Atlanta Dogwood Festival in Piedmont Park this past weekend. Adams painted an acrylic piece titled “Dead Gone” and Patti created a tall, smoke fired vase. The students were juried into the exhibition from well over 400 entries. Additionally, Adams was featured on the Good Day Atlanta show that airs mornings on FOX 5.

Also this past weekend, Helen Patti, along with fellow junior Rachel Jones and senior Samantha Hyde, had their artwork juried into the 2009 Georgia High School Ceramic Arts Awards and Symposium held at the Centre for the Performing and Visual Arts of Coweta County. Ted Saupe, professor of art/ceramics at the University of Georgia, selected the artwork for the symposium.

Additionally, art teacher Pamela Watkins and her Advanced Placement students were one of three operators of a Raku kiln during a hands-on workshop featuring the fast fire method.

In other awards, David Gridley was selected as Fayette County High School's winner in the Great Frame Up Peachtree City County Level High School Art Competition. His work has been sent to judges in California for an opportunity to compete at the national level. National winners receive an all expenses paid trip to Los Angeles to meet David Gridley
actress/artist Jane Seymore and compete for a $2,000 scholarship.

Freshman Caleb Brown took third place overall in the 2009 Congressional Art Competition. Members of the United States House of Representatives sponsor the nationwide high school competition each year. Brown received a ribbon and a $2,000 scholarship to the Art Institute of Atlanta for his winning drawing. He will also be in Watkins’ Advanced Placement Drawing Portfolio class next year.

Fayette County Art Students Create Memories for Orphaned Children

Advanced high school art students and teachers from throughout the Fayette County School System are creating lifelong keepsakes for orphaned children in Ecuador.

A total of 35 students and teachers are participating in the Memory Project, a nationwide initiative in which advanced art students create original portraits for children living in orphanages around the world.

Given that children who have been abandoned, orphaned, abused or neglected usually have few personal keepsakes, the purpose of the portraits is to provide them with a special memory of their youth, to honor their heritage and identity and help them build a positive self-image. The project also provides an opportunity for the high school students to open their hearts to children who have endured many hardships and to promote the value of sharing kindness with others.

Here’s how the project works. Art students receive pictures of children who are waiting for portraits and then work in their art classes to create the portraits. Once finished, the Memory Project organization delivers the portraits to the children and then the children are invited to create drawings or write letters to send back to the art students.

Although the program is for advanced high school art students, the county’s art teachers decided to participate in an effort to put a spotlight on the school system’s visual arts program.

“One of our art teachers heard about the project and sent me the information. This seemed like the perfect venue to promote visual art in Fayette County while simultaneously doing something good for underprivileged children around the world,” says Melissa Raymer, Fayette County’s visual art contact.

The portraits created by the students and teachers will go to children in orphanages in the cities of Quito and Cuenca, Ecuador. Before the artwork is sent, the portraits will be galleried in the media center of Fayette County High for one week starting December 2.

Both students and teachers say that participating in the project has deepened their appreciation for the people they have in their lives and has taught them that the best gift they can give is of their time and talent.

“Fayette County High School students and I felt the project was a rewarding experience in that we gave a little part of ourselves through our individual creativity to someone who we hope will cherish it, almost like a long-distance hug,” says Pamela Woodworth-Watkins, visual arts teacher at Fayette County High.

The Memory Project is a nonprofit organization based in Madison, Wisconsin. This is the fourth year of operation and already more than 10,000 portraits have been produced by high school students around the country.

New TV Show Supports Southside Arts

A new television show promoting the visual and performing arts began broadcasting Friday, November 21 on Comcast channel 25 in Fayette County. Produced by the Southside ARTS Agenda and Zeel TV for Comcast Cable Television it will also be carried by Charter Cable Television as well as Nu-Tel Cable. The month long, daily one-hour program will showcase arts events in Carroll, Clayton, Coweta, Fayette, Henry, Lamar, Meriwether, South Fulton, Spalding and Troup counties. The program’s Executive Producer is Andre De Lorenzo with Sue Ann Taylor, CEO of Zeel TV, Producer.

Currently the program can be viewed on Comcast channel 25 in Fayette County and on channel 22 in South Fulton County. Broadcast in areas served by Charter and Nu-Tel cable companies will begin shortly.

The pilot show, taped at Tyrone’s Legacy Theatre includes interviews and performances by the Henry Players, Georgia Youth Ballet, Ryan Academy of Irish Dance, the Southside Theatre Guild, the Southern Nights Chorale as well as a video tour of the Legacy Theatre.

Planned programming for The Southern Crescent Arts Round-up will contain visits to different theatrical venues throughout the Southern Crescent each month and include a variety of interviews with arts leaders throughout the Southern Crescent, performance segments by professional and community theatres, visits to local arts events and showcase the work of leading visual artists and crafts persons.

“We are very excited and pleased that Comcast Cable Television recognized the importance of the arts in the daily lives of residents throughout the Southern Crescent. Comcast embraced our concept and provided the professional support needed that brought the pilot program to the air in record time,” stated De Lorenzo. “The professional caliber of the visual and performing arts in the Southern Crescent deserve the exposure and recognition that the Southern Crescent Arts Round-up can provide. The fact that Comcast Cable has committed to supporting the arts by broadcasting the Southern Crescent Arts Round-up is a clear demonstration of their dedication to quality local television meeting the needs of our communities,” he continued.

The show can be seen throughout the day at various times until a firm time slot can be programmed into the schedule, however it can be viewed every day in prime time at approximately 8:00 PM Sunday through Saturday. Shakerag Arts & Craft Festival in Peachtree City Sept 20-22

It’s time for the 31st annual Shakerag Arts & Crafts Festival in Peachtree City. The Peachtree City Parks and Recreation Department festival begins Saturday, September 20 and continues through Sunday, September 21, and will be held at Shakerag Knoll located at 191 McIntosh Trail, Peachtree City, GA 30269. The hours on Saturday are from 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. and 12:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. on Sunday. Admission and parking is free.

“This is one of the biggest shows yet,” says Ashley Alonso, event coordinator. The only types of vendors they are no longer accepting are food, jewelry, crochet and handbags. The vendor applications are available at www.ptcrecreation.org or they are available at The Peachtree City Parks and Recreation Administration building.

Shakerag Arts & Crafts Festival is known for its handmade arts, crafts, and food. We have a variety of vendors, from all over Georgia and the south, with unique items for sale including pottery, paintings, portraits, ceramics, floral designs, pet items, jewelry, candles, authors, etc. Alonso mentions, “This is a great time to shop for the holidays and find something unique and original for friends and family.”
