Fayette County Students Selected for Governor’s Honors

A total of 18 students from the Fayette County’s high schools have been selected to attend this summer’s Governor’s Honors Program.

Judges selected the participants based on interviews and auditions of all statewide nominees. The following students were selected: (Fayette County High) Franklin Lowe, social studies. (McIntosh High) Logan Austin, communicative arts; Nicholas Chang, mathematics; Bridget Hempel, German; Jessica Morris, communicative arts; Ji-Soo Shin, mathematics; Ellen Smith, biology; and Courtney Stone, music/voice. (Starr’s Mill High) Robert Bacon, German; Katherine Fitzgerald, Spanish; Anthony Giertych, technology; Shane Mudrinich, music/voice; Chris Pham, Spanish; Haley Strauss, music/woodwinds; and Chase Thomaston, theatre. (Whitewater High) Roger Jewell, music/brass; Amy Melton, music/brass; and Sagar Pattani, social studies.

The Governor’s Honors Program provides intellectually gifted and artistically talented high school students challenging and enriching educational opportunities not usually available during the regular school year. Activities give participants opportunities to acquire the skills, knowledge and attitudes to become independent, life-long learners.

The selection process is lengthy and begins in the fall when teachers from each high school nominate students for outstanding performance in particular areas of study. The nominated students advance to county-level interviews where those for state consideration are selected.

Fayette Students Nominated for Governor’s Honors

A total of 54 students from Fayette’s five high schools were selected for statewide interviews for the 2011 Governor’s Honors Program.

Results of the interviews will determine the finalists who will participate in the four-week program this summer on the campus of Valdosta State University. Students interviewed in the following disciplines: communicative arts, mathematics, biology, physics, social studies, Spanish, French, German, dance, theatre, visual arts, music/voice, music/brass, music/strings, music/woodwinds, executive management, and technology.

The Governor’s Honors Program provides intellectually gifted and artistically talented high school students challenging and enriching educational opportunities not usually available during the regular school year. Activities give participants opportunities to acquire the skills, knowledge and attitudes to become independent, life-long learners.

The selection process is lengthy and begins in the fall when teachers from each high school nominate students for outstanding performance in particular areas of study. The nominated students advance to county-level interviews where those for state consideration are selected.

Statewide interviews are now complete; students who are chosen to participate in the program will be announced on March 25.

The six-week summer study program in Valdosta provides intellectually gifted and artistically talented high school students challenging and enriching educational opportunities not usually available during the regular school year. Activities are designed to provide each participant with opportunities to acquire the skills, knowledge and attitudes to become independent, life-long learners.

The selection process is lengthy and begins in the fall when teachers from each high school nominate students for outstanding performance in particular areas of study. The nominated students advance to county-level interviews where the finalists for state consideration are selected.

County finalists interview with state officials to determine who will participate in the summer study program. Thousands of students from around the state compete for the coveted spots each year.

The following students have been selected to participate in the 2010 program:


Fayette County High – Dayna Gomes (Music/French Horn), Stephanie Jennings (Music/French Horn), Sara Palmer (Music/Trombone), Sarika Reddy (Mathematics), and Rose Wilmot (Music/Saxophone).

McIntosh High – Karen Anderson (Mathematics), Brady Brettin (Mathematics), Mary Cook (French), Yuta Inaba (Mathematics), Han Sol Kwon (Music/Piano), Oliver McGuire (Communicative Arts), Ben Monroe (Physics), Torrie Richardson (Music/Bassoon), and Melissa Woodbridge (Visual Arts).

Sandy Creek High – Poonim Daya (Mathematics).

Starr’s Mill High – Na Young Kim (Visual Arts), Lindsay Quandt (German), and Stephanie Tan (Music/Piano).

Fayette County Students Make the Cut as Governor's Honors Candidates

A total of 66 students from Fayette’s five high schools have been named candidates for the 2009 Governors Honors Program.

The selection process is lengthy and begins in the fall when teachers from each high school nominate students for outstanding performance in particular areas of study. The nominated students advance to county-level interviews where the candidates for state consideration are selected. Fayette’s candidates represent the following subject areas: biology, communicative arts, dance, design, French, German, mathematics, music, physics, social studies, Spanish, theatre and visual arts.

The next step for the candidates will be interviews with state officials to determine who will participate in the six-week summer study program in Valdosta. Thousands of students from throughout Georgia will compete for the coveted spots. Results from the state-level interviews will be released in March or early April.

The Governors Honors Program provides intellectually gifted and artistically talented high school students challenging and enriching educational opportunities not usually available during the regular school year. Activities are designed to provide each participant with opportunities to acquire the skills, knowledge and attitudes to become independent, life-long learners.

A reception is being held in honor of the 66 candidates on January 20 in the McIntosh High cafeteria beginning at 7 p.m. with the presentation of the students following at 7:30 p.m. in the school’s auditorium.
