School System Embraces Changes for Education Community Conversations in the Works

“Where Excellence Counts” is the motto of the Fayette County Public School System. Increasing “excellence” in education for all students is exactly why the Fayette County Board of Education has unanimously adopted a resolution supporting a statewide vision to transform public education in Georgia.

Starting this fall, the school system will host a series of community conversations about the vision and what impact it could have on the future of education in Fayette County.

The vision is part of a two-year project of the Georgia School Boards Association and the Georgia School Superintendents Association aimed at changing how Georgia plans for, delivers, sustains, and provides public education for children from birth through completion of high school. The two organizations held meetings throughout the state soliciting the views of all stakeholders, including citizens and students, about the current state of public education and their hopes for the future.

The full report of the findings is Phase 1 of the project, titled “A Vision for Public Education: Equity and Excellence,” and is available on the project website: www.visionforpubliced.org. Phase 2 involves study of the recommendations at the local level, and finally implementation.

The school system plans to organize several community conversations next school year to include local businesses and organizations, students, parents, educators, residents (both with and without students in the system), and all persons interested in helping to improve the county’s educational program.

It is important for the county to continue to more forward, seeking out innovation and offering quality, well-rounded educational experiences in classrooms in every school, every day. Not just parents and students, but every resident in the county directly benefits from an effective school system. A solid educational system keeps home values high and brings businesses to the county, as well as prepares children to become responsible citizens and contributors to the community and society.

Specific dates for the community conversations will be announced at the beginning of the 2011-2012 school year. In the meantime, the community is encouraged to learn more by watching a video and reading complete information on the transformation project on the Vision for Public Education website, www.visionforpubliced.org. Exceptional Children’s Services Free Parent Workshops

Fayette County parents are invited to participate in three upcoming workshops addressing Hearing / Vision Impairments, Autism and Emotional Behavioral Disorder September 29 and October 1 at Rivers Elementary, located at 461 Sandy Creek Road in Fayetteville.

The Hearing Impaired/Visually Impaired Eligibility workshop will be held September 29 at 6 p.m. Discussion will focus on eligibility, services available and parent support groups.

Two workshops are scheduled for October 1. Beginning at 8:30 a.m., the Autism workshop will address Autism/Asperger’s eligibility, services available for students in the general curriculum and TRIAD (Treatment and Research Institute for Autism Spectrum Disorders) programs, social skills curriculum and behavior supports. There will also be a brief question and answer period for general questions.

Starting at 6 p.m. on October 1, the Emotional Behavioral Disorder (EBD) workshop will discuss EBD eligibility, services available for students in the general school and therapeutic educational settings, social skills and behavior supports.

There is no charge to attend any of the three workshops, but participants must preregister by September 28 for the Hearing Impaired/Visually Impaired workshop and by September 30 for the Autism and EBD workshops. Participants can reserve their space by emailing the Fayette County School System’s Parent Mentor, Allison Stevenson, at stevenson.allison@mail.fcboe.org, or call 770-460-3911, ext. 239.

The workshops are open to all parents of students with the disabilities addressed and to community members who want to learn more about how the Fayette County Public School System serves children with these impairments.

Light refreshments and door prize drawings will be held at each workshop.
