Girl Scouts Celebrate Earth Day

Girl Scout members from troops 189, 225, 276, and 455, of service unit 616 recently met with Mayor Kenneth Steele to present a proclamation recognizing April 22 as Earth Day. Girl Scout service unit 616 is hosting this year’s “Fayette County Earth Day” event on Saturday, April 12, at Heritage Park and Main Street.

The day will start with community clean-up projects at county parks and schools, and move to a ‘green theme’ fair with more than 35 exhibitors.

The Honey Creek Boys bluegrass band will perform for some toe-tapping entertainment. There will be food, fun, demonstrations, and displays. The Girl Scouts invite everyone to join in making Fayette County cleaner and greener!

Volunteers Needed: PTC Library Commission & Airport Authority

The City of Peachtree City is seeking volunteers for a term on the Peachtree City Library Commission and for an unexpired term on the Peachtree City Airport Authority.

The Library Commission meets on the second Wednesday of each month and advises the Mayor and City Council on issues relating to the operation of Peachtree City’s Library. The appointment is for a three-year beginning June 1, 2008.

The Airport Authority is a separate legal entity that owns and operates Peachtree City-Falcon Field Airport. The Airport Authority meets on the second Thursday of each month. The appointment will be for the term ending December 31, 2010.

Applications for these volunteer positions are available on the City’s web site, www.peachtree-city.org , under the Jobs page. Library Commission applications are due to City Hall by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, April 25. Airport Authoity applications are due to City Hall by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, May 9. Applicants must have lived in Peachtree City for at least 6 months.

My hummingbirds are back...

Finally. It's truly Spring, life is good and everything is right with the world.

My parents, who live on Lake Oconee, have had hummingbirds for weeks so I figured we were bound to have them here since we're a bit further south. As of this afternoon I hadn't noticed any hummingbirds yet and was just a bit bummed. My office has windows on three sides and overlooks the porch were I put the feeders. I have a great view and would have noticed.

I sneaked down to the studio to play in the clay for a bit this afternoon, going out the back door so I could check the feeders. I've had them out since Easter so I thought I should check to make sure the contents hadn't gone bad. Sure enough they were building crud so I dumped them.

After an hour or so in the studio I came up, grabbed the empty feeder and went in to clean and refill. As I opened the back door to put out fresh food, there sat a hummingbird on the perch patiently waiting for me to bring him his dinner. Definitely a male!

I put one feeder out running him off for a moment or two. As I turned to go inside another one zoomed by buzzing close enough that I felt the breeze.

Now they're both out there. One sitting on the perch guarding his feeders, the other trying to sneak in for a quick nip. Tomorrow I'll put a feeder out near the studio and one around the corner out of site. Hopefully this year I'll attract a few more than in the past.

Reality Climbing Rocks

Reality Climbing, an indoor rock climbing facility on the border of Peachtree City and Tyrone, sent sixteen climbers to the first of seven USA Climbing/Sport Climbing Series competitive events on Saturday, February 23.

Rock climbing is a sport of speed, strength, strategy, endurance, agility, and quick thinking! Ben Watson, an 8th grader at Rising Starr Middle School, says, “Climbing is a tough sport that requires both strength of mind and body.”

First place finishers from Reality included Michael LaCour and Jane Lu. Victoria White, a 3rd grader at Tyrone Elementary, and Grace Robertson placed second. Third place finishers include MasAnne Fulmer, a 4th grader at Peeples Elementary, Ben Watson, 8th grade at Rising Starr Middle School, and Michael White. A fourth place finish from Kevin McInturff and sixth place finishes from Billy Porter, a 3rd grader at Peeples Elementary, Julia Roberts, a 6th grader at Bennett’s Mill Middle School, and Tyler Jones, a 11th grader at McIntosh High School left Reality Climbing excited about their first competition of the season.

USA Climbing competitions are Red Point formats, which give climbing competitors points for successfully climbing a route to the top without using or weighting the gear or rope. Julia Roberts, a 6th grader at Bennett’s Mill Middle School, who is in one of the toughest categories of climbers this year, stated after the competition, “Climbing is so much fun! After three years, the one thing I have learned is patience and persistence do pay off!”

Additional participants included Madison Altman, Betsy McInturff, Hannah Montondo, Sammy Heine, and Andrew Nagy.

The Harvest Yard Sale will feature a fundraising booth for the Fayette County Special Olympics. The goal of the Fayette County Special Olympics is to help bring persons with intellectual disabilities into the larger society under conditions whereby they are accepted, respected, and given the chance to become useful and productive citizens. When we achieve this goal through our sports program, we demonstrate that Special Olympics has a unique value: to show the world that every person counts and that every person can be something good when we work together.

Fayette County Special Olympics invests in people with intellectual disabilities, helping them to develop athletic skills, while also promoting the abilities of the athletes off the field. When our athletes succeed, attitudes change, the community develops, health and self-esteem are built, and the eyes of the world are focused on all that is good and hopeful and positive. Athletes gain skills for employment, learn independent living skills, form relationships and help others understand their extraordinary capabilities despite health issues they experience daily. Twenty-three different sports are offered on the state-level for athletes to experience; Fayette County actively participates in 18 of those sports - ranging from badminton, swimming, soccer and gymnastics. Our athletes range in age from 8 years old to 61 years old!

Only through volunteers are we able to fulfill our mission in serving our athletes and continue to grow. The volunteers are dedicated to providing the highest quality programs and services to the athletes and serve as certified coaches, event staff, unified sports partners and fundraisers. The continuing success of the organization depends on the ongoing support of the community.

Kiela Pagsisihan Places 6th in GISA Finals!

Our Lady of Victory Catholic School eighth grader, Kiela Pagsisihan, advanced on to the GISA (Georgia Independent Schools) spelling bee and placed 6th in the state finals.

Two hundred and fifty-four students participated in the GISA state spelling bee.

The competition included a written test, with the top twenty students advancing on to the oral competition.

AARP Driver Safety Program

Fayette Senior Services will sponsor AARP’s 55 Alive Driver Safety Program classes on Tuesday, April 8 and Thursday April 10 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at their new life enrichment center located at 4 Center Drive in Fayetteville (across from the Fayette County Justice Center). The AARP Driver Safety Program is an 8-hour classroom refresher that can help you learn the effects of aging on driving and how you can adjust your driving. Classes are taught in two, four-hour sessions spanning the two days. The cost is $10 and covers the Driver Safety Program Certificate and all class materials.

“There are five very good reasons for drivers who are age 50 and better to take advantage of the Driver Safety Program” says Fayette Senior Services program manager, Susan Landais. Participants can:

1. Learn defensive driving techniques, new traffic laws, rules of the road and much more in this 8-hour course.
2. Find out how to adjust your driving to age-related changes in vision, hearing and reaction time.
3. Get an INSURANCE DISCOUNT from auto insurance companies who operate in the state of Georgia.
4. Relax. There are no tests.
5. Find out why millions of people over 50 have taken advantage of this valuable course.

Course instructor, Col. John A. Milani states “I have driven over three million miles as a commercial driver. Even with that record behind me, I have to keep an open mind and learn new things. The Driver Safety Program taught me a lot about normal age related changes that I didn’t realize. I know I’m a better driver for it.” Col. John also emphasizes that participants will learn critical safety information such as:

How to compensate for changes in vision, hearing, and reaction time
How to handle problem situations such as left turns, right-of-way, freeway traffic, trucks, and blind spots
What to do if confronted by an aggressive driver
When to use a car phone
How medications may affect driving
How to properly use anti-lock brakes, air bags, and safety belts
How to assess one’s own and others’ abilities via a “Personal Driving Capability Index.”

Kindergarten Registration Day, Fayette County, GA

Parents with children entering kindergarten for the 2008-2009 school year can register their students at their schools of attendance on March 27.

All county elementary schools will register students from 9-11a.m. and 4-6 p.m. Students attending Inman Elementary will register at East Fayette Elementary. Kindergarteners entering Fayette schools after March 27 will register at the Welcome Center located at the LaFayette Educational Center in Fayetteville.

Students must be five years old on or before September 1, 2008 to register for kindergarten. To verify a child’s school of attendance, contact the Welcome Center, 770-460-3990, ext. 450.

Parents must bring the following documentation to registration:

1. Proof of Residency

a. Homeowners: A current residential property tax statement (if there is not a tax bill, then the purchasing/closing information for the residence can be used). The record must include the name of the parent/guardian, a current electric or gas utility bill/initiation of utility service and a photo ID.

b. Renters: A current lease or rental agreement consisting of the written evidence that the agreement is valid. The record must include the name of the parent/guardian, a current gas or electric bill/initiation of utility service and a photo ID.

c. Non-Renters or Occupants of another person's home/residence: A designated Fayette County Schools Property Affidavit signed by the parent/guardian, as well as by the home's occupants and the property owner. The record must include the name of the parent/guardian, the student(s) being enrolled and a photo ID. The property owner must also provide the documents noted above. If help is required, please call Residency Officer Arlene Law at 770-460-3990, ext.221.

2. Copy of Birth Certificate

Birth certificates with the biological parents noted can be obtained from the Georgia Department of Human Resources Vital Records at 404-679-4701. Birth certificates for children born in other states can be obtained by contacting the Vital Records Department within that state (hospital certificates are not acceptable).

3. Immunization Certificate

A current and completed Georgia Department of Human Resources Form 3231 is required by state law showing immunizations for measles, mumps, rubella, polio, whooping cough, tetanus, diphtheria, hepatitis B and varicella. This form may be obtained by taking the current immunization record to the Fayette County Health Department or a Georgia physician.

4. Certificate of Ear, Eye and Dental Examination

A current (within one year of school entry) and complete Georgia Department of Human Resources form 3300 (ear, eye and dental exam) is required by state law. This form is available from the Fayette County Health Department or from a private physician.

5. Social Security Card

6. Student Emergency Contact Information

This includes emergency contact names as well as physicians and dentist names and telephone numbers.

Free Household Water Saver Kits

Free Household Water Saver Kits

The Fayette County Water System is offering free water saver kits for water system customers whose single-family homes were built before 1993. Limited quantities of the kits are available at both the Water System offices on McDonough Road in Fayetteville and at City Hall in Peachtree City.

Qualifying residents will need to fill out an application and must bring a copy of their water bill and a photo ID. The free kits are limited to one per single-family household.

The 2008 State Summer Games will be held May 30-June 1, at Emory University. Detailed information will be announced, as it gets closer to the competition time. From the list below, please indicate the top two (2) choices that your athlete is interested in training in for State Summer Games.

Many practices are based upon what age group signs up for them.

History Buffs Wanted at the Holliday-Dorsey-Fife Museum

The Holliday-Dorsey-Fife (HDF) Museum will offer two docent training classes on Sat., March 8 and March 15 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. This training is for anyone interested in becoming a part of history. Not only will you receive exhibit training, but you will hear entertaining stories about the people and places in Fayetteville.

The training includes a workbook and stories about our seven exhibit rooms including the Family Room from which the Museum is named, The War Between the States Room and Fayetteville’s participation in it, The Gone With the Wind Room and Margaret Mitchell’s ties to Fayetteville, The Fayette County Room that tracts Fayetteville’s colorful timeline, The 1800’s Bedroom, the recently dedicated Veteran’s Room and a special rotating exhibit room which currently features the largest Gerber baby food collection.

The HDF Museum is a Greek revival antebellum house built in 1855. Learn about the local ties between Doc Holliday and Gone With the Wind and why Across the street, the Museum offers tours of the Historic City Cemetery where Margaret Mitchell’s great grandparents are laid to rest.

The Museum is searching for people interested in history, museum preservation or community service. The training will be conducted by City Historian and House Manager John Lynch and Debi Riddle, Museum Coordinator. FAYETTE COUNTY EARTH DAY 2008: “Becoming Cleaner and Greener!”

Fayette County Earth Day will be celebrated on Saturday, April 12th, from 8:00am – 3:30pm. This inaugural event will include several community clean-up and beautification projects followed by a fun-filled ‘green themed’ fair at Fayetteville’s Main Street and Heritage Park.

The Girl Scouts of Service Unit 616 are ‘Going Green’ and in partnership with the City of Fayetteville and Fayette County, are hosting Fayette’s first ever EARTH DAY Celebration.

“We are eager, excited, and honored to host Earth Day and promote the Scout motto ‘leave it BETTER than you found it’ “, explains organizer and Girl Scout leader, Joan Fecteau.
Fayette County Earth Day will feature a wide-range of onsite recycling demonstrations, environment displays and demonstrations, and interactive and educational booths by many local youth, non-profit and small business groups. Whatever your interest, Fayette County Earth Day will have something for you.

Fayette County Earth Day promises to be an amazing demonstration of how the everyday decisions we make in life affect our environment. It is a chance to better understand the issues affecting our community while taking direct action to be part of the solution. Your ideas and participation are important. Fayette County Toastmasters Speech Contest Coming Soon

Carol A. Lunsford, AREA 17 Governor of Division A Toastmasters, District 14 (the Southern Crescent AREA of Metropolitan Atlanta) announces the combined AREA 16 and AREA 17 Table Topics and International Speech Contests to be held February 16, 2008 from 2-5 PM at the Fayette Presbyterian Church, 791 Forrest Avenue (Hwy 92 N) Fayetteville, GA.

AREA 16 Toastmaster clubs are located in Fayetteville and Peachtree City respectively. AREA 17 Clubs are located in Peachtree City and College Park.

The Table Topics Contest consists of impromptu speaking. The contestants are to speak off-the-cuff for 1-2 minutes about a subject with no prior warning. The Speech Contest consists of delivery of a 5-7 minutes prepared speech. Each contestant is judged based on criteria set forth by Toastmasters International.

The AREA winners will face each other at the Division A Contest to be held March 29 in Stockbridge. Division winners from across the state will vie for the District Title during the May 2 –May 3 Spring Conference to be held at they Wyndham Conference Center in Peachtree City.

Only the Speech Contest winners advance to the Region VIII contest, to be held in Atlanta in June. The Region winner will face competitors from across the globe at the International Speech Contest to be held during August.

AREA 16 Clubs are High Noon Toastmasters and Peachtree City Toastmasters. AREA 17 Clubs are 6600 South, College Park; Achieving Excellence Toastmasters, College Park; FBC Toastmasters, College Park;and Westpark Toastmasters, Peachtree City.

The public is invited to attend the contests that will determine which local resident will advance to the Division Contest.

Fayette County High School Sports Hall of Fame

The 2008 Fayette County High School Sports Hall of Fame is scheduled for March 8th. 6:45PM Dinner and Induction Ceremony at 8:00PM in the FCHS Commons Area. Inductees for 2008 include three former student athletes who excelled at the sport in both high school and at the next level, College or Pro., Chris McKnight -Baseball, Becky Robertson Kouns -Soccer and Dennis Broderick- Baseball. We will also honor two former coaches and administrators - Gary Phillips former coach and long time principal at FCHS and Trigg Dalrymple -former coach and Superintendent of Fayette County Schools. The Distinguished Alumni Recognition will be a special tribute of the former students who made the ultimate sacrifice in the service to our country in World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Viet Nam War, with a tribute to the "Fallen Heroes" Tickets are available at FCHS front office and Fayette Sports for $20.00 each.
